Slow start for Canadians at Safeway Open.. Friday scoreboard

Safeway Open Friday https://www.pgatour.com/competition/2021/safeway-open/leaderboard.html

An opening round by Scotsman Russell Knox of -9 63 has set the standard for the week at this Safeway Open on the Silverado course in Napa California, north of San Francisco. Depending on the wind, San Francisco has been covered in smoke and ash from the terrible forest fires in the northern part of the state, up into Oregon and Washington, where thousands of people are being evacuated as their homes are consumed by the inferno.

It was a slow start for the Canadians, With the cut projected to fall at -2, Graham DeLaet began what he hopes will be his comeback with +2 74. Roger Sloan came in at +1 73, Michael Gligic was a little better at -2 70 and veteran David Hearn -3 69.

Phil Mickelson who lives near San Diego shot -1 71  in his warm up for next week's US Open and Jordan Spieth +1 73.

Nice guy Luke Donald, former world #1, and winner of both the Race to Dubai and the Fed Ex Cup in the same year 2011, and was awarded the MBE (Member of the British Empire) continues to struggle his way back from injury, his medical exemption ran out on February 28, 2020 and he is now using a career earnings category to play on tour. He was ranked 609th in the world when injury halted his play in 2018.

This week he opened last in the field with +6 78.
