Heartbreak for Kaymer, Catlin gets first win at Estrella Damm Andulucia Masters.. final scoreboard

Andulucia Masters final scoreboard https://www.europeantour.com/european-tour/estrella-damm-n-a-andalucia-masters/

Martin Kaymer has won 15 times in his career, the last being the US Open 6 long years ago. Last week he finished a close 3rd by a shot at the UK Championship.

Today after an 18 hole battle with young Californian  John Catlin on the brutally hard Valderrama, with a gusting wind, tight cork tree lined fairways and lightning fast hard greens that made scoring extremely difficult, he had a 6 foot putt at the 17th to take the lead going up 18.

He missed it. Then he made a mess of his 3rd from the green side bunker at 18, while Catlin lagged stone dead. The ultimate dagger to Kaymer was his pitch from the light rough rolled dead center to the hole, and stopped right on the lip. 72 72 69 74 +3.

Catlin led from wire to wire and was full value for his first European Tour victory at 69,70,72,75 +2. He has won 4 times in Asia, and is now fully exempt.

Drama at Valderrama is the old saying, this great Spanish course has been the scene of so many moments in European Tour history, none bigger than their Ryder Cup victory in 1997.

The last player this weekend was at +22, so difficult were the conditions, despite the beautiful Andulucian sunshine. The scoring average on the par 71 was 76.4. The only hole that played under par was the par 4 second at 3.94.

Next week they move down the coast for the Portugal Masters.
