What a time it is for sports in Europe. The World Cup will be decided between England, Belgium, France and Croatia, Sergio Garcia and Tommy Fleetwood showed up in the Royal Box at wonderful Wimbledon, and in golf we had the French Open last week, the Irish Open this week, the Scottish Open next week then of course the Open Championship at Carnoustie after that.
All eyes were on Rory McIlroy whose foundation benefits from this Dubai Duty Free Irish Open, but despite hitting the ball as well as ever from tee to green his putting has simply let him down, he made the cut but is not in contention as round 4 gets under way this morning.
You are forgiven if you've never heard of the surprise leader, South African Erik Van Rooyen who has three top tens since graduating from the Challenge Tour last season and is having the week of his life so far at this spectacular Ballyliffin GC on the NW tip of Ireland.
He began Saturday with a share of the lead and promptly made six birdies in a front nine of 29, the best of the field by far, then made par at all the rest for -6 66 and a -14 total four shots clear of New Zealander Ryan Fox and Swede Joakim Lagergren
Of note 2016 Masters champion Danny Willet who rose to #9 in the world and has slid all the way to #442 is 5th, 68 70 69 -9, and called his play of late "the light at the end of a very long tunnel".
