Pro golf's version of the country bumpkin Boo Weekley shot an -8 64 in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans for a share of the first-round lead with Brendon de Jonge.

Weekley one of the games best ball strikers had been struggling until he changed the shafts in his irons on Tuesday and as a result had an eagle, seven birdies at the soggy TPC Louisiana. De Jonge had eight birdies in his flawless round.

Players were allowed to lift, clean and place their balls as rain arrived in the afternoon, suspending play for over an hour and that coupled with no wind left the course at the players mercy.

Canada’s David Hearn shot a brilliant -7 65 along with Sean O'Hair. Other Canadian scores Nick Taylor T50 -2 70, Roger Sloan, Adam Hadwin T75 -1 71, Mike Weir T130 +2 74

Tour rookie Mark Hubbard shot a -6 66 to tie with Erik Compton, Brian Davis, Greg Owen and Daniel Berger.

Dustin Johnson continues his fine return to golf with a -5 67 as part of a group which includes former Zurich winner K.J. Choi and Jason Day.
