As she got ready to celebrate her 18th birthday top-ranked Lydia Ko returned from two weeks off to take the first round lead Thursday at -5 67 in San Francisco at the Swinging Skirts.
She has a one-stroke lead over three others, including Julie Inkster who is 3 times her age and shot 68 on a cool breezy morning to take the clubhouse lead. Stacy Lewis, last year’s runner-up to Ko at Lake Merced, is two strokes back at 69.
Ha Na Jang also shot a 68, as did P.K. Kongkraphan and it was a good day for Canadian Brooke Henderson who is T9 after an opening-round 70 on he day she was announced as Ontario athlete of the year !
British Columbia’s Sue Kim shot 72 to T28th.
