DP World Tour Thursday results Leaderboard Tee Times
Todd Clements carded a -5 66 to hold a one-shot lead after the opening round of the Amgen Irish Open.
The 28-year-old from England carded five birdies, two bogeys and eagled the 18th – his ninth – to top the leaderboard ahead of Spain's Alejandro Del Ray 67 and Finland's Sami Välimäki 67, at Royal County Down.
Rory McIlroy is nicely placed T4 with an opening -3 68 after birdeing the last holes.. "Any time you can get around here in 3 or 4 under par you have to be happy"
Starting on the back nine, Clements – who won his first DP World Tour title at the 2023 D+D Real Czech Masters – birdied the tenth from 15 feet and tapped in for another gain on the par-five 12th on a day he described as " pretty brutal at times"
A wonderful second at the long 18th then created a 17-foot eagle opportunity which was duly taken as Clements raced to the turn in 32.
A birdie from three feet at the first saw him threaten to burst clear only for bogeys at the second and fourth to check his progress.
"This course is as hard as it gets, that was one of the best rounds of my career. Tomorrow will be cold and windy so another stern test. Just take it day by day".
edit ***** Aaron Cockerill fought back from +3 through 8 holes with a birdie at the 9th then added 3 more on the back nine to get in at T33 71 E. He will be out early on Friday.
