USGA : US Open Scoring
When the USGA staff arrived at the LA Country Club at 5am Thursday, they were surrounded in a damp overnight mist blanketing the north course. Course grounds crew advised them it would be playing soft, until the sun broke through and dried it out..
It never did...As a result, the best pro's in the world went out and beat it up, setting a new majors record of 62, -8 by Rickie Fowler and later Xander Schauffele, both out early.
When the conditions persisted, and with 4 of the tee boxes moved up, the low scoring continued into the afternoon.
Wyndham Clark and Dustin Johnson both -6 64.
Rory and lefty Brian Harman both -5 65, then seven players including top Canadian Mac Hughes at -3 67
You have to scroll down to T56 to find the first scores over par, most unusual for a US Open set up, however as we know Mother nature always has her hand in the best laid plans. The scoring average 71.3 on the day.
Of note, Tommy Fleetwood T107 +3 73, Justin Rose T143 +6 76, Tyrrell HHatton T123 +4 74 were all right in contention last week at the RBC Canadian Open, Tommy losing in the playoff.
This morning the USGA already had plans to lengthen the course, the greens are running at 13.5, but we have to wait to see if it will be sunny and hot. making the course play at it's best when it's "bouncy", or will it be another damp overcast day, thus more low scoring.
Big picture says the weather will clear out and we will see a true test as planned over the 72 holes.
