Wes Short Jr. who won his only Champions Tour event in Quebec last year opened with a -5 67 for a one-stroke lead in the San Antonio Championship, not far from where he played his college golf at the University of Texas.
Stephen Ames with 3 straight birdies from the 5th-7 and another on the 14th played a bogey free round of 68 and is in the group at -4 with Duffy Waldorf, Scott Dunlap, Paul Goydos and Jeff Sluman, all T2.
Defending champion Michael Allen had a 69 while Charles Schwab Cup leader Colin Montgomerie opened with a 71 and he has a narrow 39-point lead over Jeff Maggert with three events left in the season-long competition. Maggert had a 72.
