McIlroy trails by 3 after 1st round in Dubai

Spain's Rafael Cabrera-Bello’s -9, 63 left him two shots clear at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic but World Number Two Rory McIlroy had seven birdies in his last ten holes to finish the opening round only three behind.

It could have been even better for both of them, however. Cabrera-Bello had the chance to achieve The European Tour's first 59 when he stood on his 12th tee nine under par. It left him needing four more birdies to achieve the magic figure, but the 27 year old Spaniard parred in for a 63 and a two stroke lead over German Marcel Siem -7 65 and Scotland's Scott Jamieson -7 65

US Open Champion McIlroy was deep in the pack at one over after eight, but a birdie on the difficult ninth sparked him into life and by the time he almost holed-in-one on the 15th - Scot Stephen Gallacher did make an ace there - he was up to five under, he made it -6 66 with a 2 putt birdie on 18. He has girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki with him this week

Lee Westwood had a-3 69, last week's winner Paul Lawrie a -1,71 after closing with a double bogey on the ninth and Abu Dhabi champion Robert Rock a +1 73.  Martin Kaymer did eagle the last and that was for a=6, 66 as well, while John Daly - fourth last week in Qatar - had a =1,71 that included a triple-bogey seven on the ninth

Freddie Couples is in the field, he's in with -2 70, Mark O'Meara -3 69
