Mickelson's triumph at Pebble Beach.. Tiger's flop

It will go down as a "biggie" in the Phil Mickelson golf story. To shoot 64 on Sunday at Pebble, thrash the Tiger by 11 shots on national TV, with all your golfing peers watching, to overtake a gallant Charlie Wi's 6 shot advantage when quite frankly your play has been mediocre at best, perhaps your desire as well, no belly putter just the old reliable blade, no last minute meltdown, in fact a birdie at the last,  He won for the fourth time at Pebble Beach, and became only the ninth player in PGA TOUR history with 40 wins.... Oh yes,it was a biggie for Phil Mickelson.... another Sunday 75 flop for Tiger.

Wi, who started the final round with a three-shot lead, four-putted for double bogey on the opening hole and never quite recovered. He closed with back-to-back birdies for an even-par 72 and his fifth runner-up finish on tour

Mickelson started the day six shots behind Wi and went two shots ahead with an eagle on the sixth hole. Woods then vanished in a series of blunders -- missing a 2-foot par putt on the seventh, missed a 5-foot par putt on the eighth, and a third straight bogey at No. 9 when he hit his approach into the bunker.

The only hope for Woods came on the 12th, when he holed his bunker shot. It looked like it might be a two-shot swing, pulling him to within three of the lead, until Mickelson made his 30-footer for par.

" I just putted awful today" said Tiger, in fact he had 31 putts, averaged 30 per round over the week. It is still a bit of a shock to the system to see him in contention on Sunday's without closing the deal, but still I will say this is a process for him and one of these weeks when he keeps putting himself in contention he will win again. Remember this guy only plays the big events, majors, WGC's so he is always in with the best.
