Brilliant play by Stephen Ames falls just a shot behind as Miguel Jimenez steals the Mitsubishi Electric.. final scoreboard

PGA Tour Champions : Mitsubishi Electric Championship final leaderboard here

Stephen Ames did absolutely all he could do to win his 2nd Mitsubishi Electric Championship this weekend on the Hualalai course at the Four Seasons Resort on the big island of Hawaii, including holing out from off the 18th green on his final hole for -6 66 to the delight of the holiday crowd enjoying the golf as well as the sounding whales, and clubhouse cocktails.

As it happens Miguel Jimenez who was trailing the leaders all week made 4 birdies in a row on his back nine, as did Kiwi sensation Steven Alker who both birdied the 18th to get to -17, a shot ahead of Stephen, and Vijay Singh who T3.

They would need a playoff to settle the winner. Alker who burst onto the Champions Tour as a Monday qualifier late last season, missed a 10 foot birdie putt to win on the first playoff hole, then made a bogey 5 on the second after the Spanish legend made par for the win.

Mike Weir shot a closing 68 T19th -7.

Ames is truly enjoying life on this senior circuit, with his wife Kelly, The more relaxed atmosphere, guys he's played against for years, who still practice, play hard but can enjoy a few drinks and a barbeque when the time is right suits Stephen at this time of his life.

Homes in Vancouver and especially now in Turks and Caicos give him down time in paradise and apparently they are close to buying another in Hawaii, where he has spent the past month preparing for this week.

He's off to a flying start, the next event is February 18-20, the Chubb Classic in Naples Florida.
