There are many instances of spoiled rich pro athletes saying things that we, normal working stiffs, just shake our heads at. They just further contribute to the disconnect that exists between the lives they live and ours.. I remember Kevin Garnett, a star player for sure, saying he couldn't possibly sign a contract with Minnesota for just $30 million when others of his perceived seniority and lesser ability were getting more...I have never watched him since..
This week at Jack's Memorial no less, Mickelson shot a 79 and then told playing partners
Rickie Fowler and Bubba Watson that he was going home because he was mentally
drained after a hectic past few weeks that included taking his wife, Amy, to
Italy and France for her 40th birthday.
I've got to be more big picture-oriented and think about the U.S. Open (in two
weeks at Olympic) and what's best to get my best golf out there, and I need the
next few days to rest up a bit," Mickelson said, offering regrets he wasn't
living up to his "responsibility" to finish the tournament
Now I have gone on golfing holidays where we have played every day for 10 days and when I have returned home I was happy not to hit a ball for a week or so, and many would say I have been mentally exhausted since just after the grade 3 spelling bee I lost to Beatrice Airhart who spelt phlegm when I couldn't..
So let's look at what is exhausting Phil, who remember lives in a state of luxury restricted to only the very wealthy elite of this planet, and who likely has a swing coach, a fitness trainer, a sports psychologist as well as a tremendously supportive and beautiful wife to help him get by...
On Jan 22 he started a run of 5 tournament weeks in a row, all on the west coast, so not much travel in his private jet, culminating in a win at Pebble and P2 at Phoenix. The $2.1m he won probably took him a lot of late nights to count, so some tiredness there for sure..
To recover he took a 2 week vacation, before resurfacing at the WGC at Doral where he did play 4 rounds T43, and was so tired he promptly booked another 1 week holiday before starting a 3 week run at Arnie's, including a T4 at the Shell and T3 at the Masters,.. you got it another $650,000 and more exhausting counting and folding...
So off now for 3 week's holiday, during which time he took Amy who helps him with the counting, folding and I assume spending, on a first class holiday to some of the finest resorts, hotels and spa's in Italy and France... I mean that type of hectic schedule would just drain you or I, so we would probably take an extra Monday off work to sleep it off.
Poor Phil now has to leave Amy and the kids and go to Charlotte, then the Players then the Byron Nelson, before booking another week's holiday then staggering up to Dublin Ohio for Jack's Memorial, by this time simply drained, I assume by the rigours of flying back home for all these damn holidays that he simply couldn't manage more than 1 round before, apologizing, packing it in, for you got it, another 2 weeks holiday..
So count them up, he started work on January 17, this is June 1st so that's.. let's see 19 weeks, just over 4 months or so and in that time he has had 7 week's of holiday's, not including the 2 he is taking now....
Now most of us get 2 - 4 weeks a year, and would probably just think we'd died and gone to heaven if the boss were waiting every day at the office door to tell us how special we are before forcing box seats on us for every event at Massey Hall, passing on a message from Ruth at her Steakhouse begging us to eat there every Friday night, all free if we could just let her take a few photo's of us, before saying he understood if we just needed a coupla weeks more off...
Oh hold on.... those damn photos..
Two more spoiled brats, Bubba Watson and Rickie Fowler have jumped to Phil's defence, blaming his withdrawal on fans who
continually distracted Mickelson by snapping photos with cellphone cameras."Phil's a great player and a great champion and it just took him out of his

Damn fans, holding down 3 jobs to make ends meet, paying a small fortune for the privilege of marching up and down the bug infested woods just to get the odd glimpse of their idol, Phil slashing and hacking his way to a 79, and damn it they took a picture of him to send to all their colleagues at work... What a nerve...
I sure hope none of the family snap a photo of him while he is recuperating over the next fortnight to steel himself for another tortuous week at the Olympic Club..
I'd write more but I have to get back to work...here comes the boss and he doesn't look happy..

Luke Donald turns to well known Rugby guru.
AP LONDON — The man who turned Jonny Wilkinson into the best kicker in world rugby could prove to be a key factor in Luke Donald's quest to end his major drought this summer.
Donald woke up Monday as the world's top-ranked player having overtaken Rory McIlroy after his four-stroke win at the BMW PGA Championship on Sunday. The Englishman credits his calm at Wentworth this weekend to the work he's doing with Dave Alred, a performance coach and sports psychologist.
“It's helped me to really be aware of my posture and how I outwardly project that feeling of positiveness,” Donald said. “It helps me send that message to whoever I'm playing with.”
Justin Rose was Donald's playing partner on the final day and started two shots behind his Ryder Cup colleague. With Donald bogeying the 4th and Rose making birdie there, the players were quickly tied at 10 under, but Donald had the mental strength to pull away again and cruise to the victory, achieving the first successful title defense of his career.
Rose said Donald's consistency off the tee and clutch putting proved to be the difference on an extremely difficult West Course.
“He's certainly always on at me again about keeping the shoulders back and not getting down on myself, staying positive not just mentally but physically and through my body position,” Donald said of Alred. “So I think I've done a lot better job of it since I've been working with Dave. He's always reminding me. It helps to feel very confident on the greens, too. It's always been a strength of mine, especially in the last four or five years.”
Alred's best work has been in rugby, as a kicking coach for England's national team and the British and Irish Lions. He also has had an input in players' mental preparation, which helped turn Wilkinson into a kicking machine who sparked England's success at the start of the century, including the winning goal at the 2003 Rugby World Cup.
As far as Donald, Alred's next step is guiding him over the winning line at a major. Donald has two third-place finishes at Grand Slam events, but still holds the tag of being one of the best current players never to have won a major.
“Well I certainly think I have the ability. It's putting four rounds together like I did here,” Donald said.
“I think there could be 20, 25 guys who would say that when they are on their game any given week, they are going to be tough to beat. I feel like I'm part of that group.”
Returning to the top of the rankings for the third time in 10 weeks will give him extra confidence heading into the U.S. Open in San Francisco on June 14-17 and then the British Open in July and the U.S. PGA Championship in August.
Rose climbed to No. 6 after finishing tied for second with Paul Lawrie at 11 under, matching his highest ever position in the rankings. Lawrie climbed from 40th to 29th.
With three Ryder Cup hopefuls topping the leaderboard on Sunday, Donald believes Europe is in a good position to defend the trophy in Medinah near Chicago in September.
“I think it's shaping up nicely, our team,” he said. “The U.S. guys are playing well, too. I think it's going to be a tough battle.”

NOTES Matt Harmon of Grand Rapids, MI won on the second hole of a sudden death playoff after he hit a masterful bunker shot on the par-5 18th that took one bounce, spun right, and found the bottom of the hole for a dramatic winning eagle and his first career eGolf Tour title.
The HGM Hotels Classic at Rock Barn was the 11th of 24 events on the 2012 eGolf Professional Tour schedule, and was contested this week on the Robert Trent Jones Jr. Course at Rock Barn Club & Spa in Conover, NC.
Needing to convert the birdie for his second win in three weeks, Drew Weaver stared in disbelief as the putt missed on the right side of the hole. With a final-round 70 posted for a 14-under total, Weaver and Harmon headed back to the tee of the 18th for the first playoff hole.

DeLaet to miss Memorial this week...Price named captain
The Canadian contingent for this week's Memorial Tournament has been reduced by one after Graham DeLaet was forced to withdraw Tuesday with back pain.
"Tweaked my back on the weekend and won't be ready to go for Thurs.," tweeted DeLaet, who added he was "really bummed" about the decision.
"Good news is its not a re-injury. MRI showed no disc issues. Just need a few more days rest."
DeLaet underwent back surgery in 2011 for a painful bulging disc. He attempted to return but was forced to the sidelines after just two starts due to stiffness and discomfort. He returned at the start of 2012 and is playing this year under a major medical exemption, meaning he needs to earn $657,694 in 26 starts to keep his Tour status. So far in 15 starts, he's earned close to $527,000 with his biggest payday being a tie for fourth at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
DeLaet's only other appearance at the Memorial came in 2010 when he missed the cut after shooting rounds of 75 and 71.
That leaves David Hearn and Mike Weir as our Canucks at Jack's event..

Fred Couples returns for a third stint as U.S. captain for the Presidents Cup, with a different captain trying to beat him.
Nick Price, a three-time major champion from Zimbabwe, has been selected to lead the International team in 2013. Greg Norman was the International team captain the last two times.
Couples joins Jack Nicklaus as the only captains to serve in three matches. The Americans have won the Presidents Cup both times with Couples as the captain, including last year at Royal Melbourne. Price played five times in the Presidents Cup, the most of any captain on either team. His last appearance was in 2003 in South Africa, which ended in a tie.
The Presidents Cup will be played Oct. 3-6 at Muirfield Village.

Manassero makes, Monty misses US Open
LONDON - Swede Alex Noren and Briton Marc Warren booked their tickets for next month’s U.S. Open after finishing top of 36-hole qualifying at Walton Heath on Monday.
Former Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie failed in his bid after making a 900-mile overnight trip to Scotland and back to fetch a putter. He left Wentworth at 2 pm (local) on Sunday after a closing 81 in the PGA Championship on the outskirts of London. He arrived home at around 8 pm and, after sharing dinner with his family, jumped back in his car to make the journey to the south of England.
"Who in their right mind would do that? But yes, I did," Montgomerie was quoted as saying by the Press Association.
Spain’s Jose Maria Olazabal, who has taken over as Ryder Cup skipper from Montgomerie for this year’s match in Illinois, also missed out at Walton Heath.

Roger Chapman hits the jackpot, Zack Johnson nearly blows the Colonial
Tiger Woods always marks his ball with a quarter heads up,... except when he moves it out of the line of a playing partner when he marks it tails up. Why ???... To remind him to move the coin back.
Zack Johnson might want to begin that habit.
In that matchplay type of round he had going with Jason Dufner in yesterday's final round, it almost cost him the championship. The tournament had really been decided on the 15th when Dufner took a triple bogey after driving into a fairway bunker, then hitting his approach left of the flag, spinning into the water.
That gave Johnson a 3 shot lead which he held onto the 18th green. He had a 5 footer for par left, moved it out of Dufner's line, Dufner made his par, then Johnson made his, hugged his caddy, pumped his fist... then someone said hold on a minute..you didn't return the ball... 2 shot penalty....giving him a 72 and a one shot win over Dufner who struggled to a 74 of his own...
So Johnson picks up his 8th win, his second at the Colonial where apart from Dufner, he was the pick of we so called experts.. Horses for courses and all that..
David Hearn closed with 70 and a -2 total good for T13..

In my opinion the guy whose win meant the most to, over the weekend was Roger Chapman. The money that Luke Donald, Zack Johnson or Jason Dufner made won't change their lives a jot, but at 53, with one professional win in over 30 years, and that one a minor European Tour event in Brazil, he really hit the jackpot. The millions he will make in endorsements, and appearances and his new exempt status, will make up for the 15 or so runner up spots he accrued in what he called a B minus European Tour career. He even packed that in for a few years to become a Tour rules official.

After taking a nine-stroke lead early in the final round of the Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid, Roger Chapman needed only to play out the remaining holes and savor the greatest moment of his professional life.
That's when he began to think about his mentor, George Will, who died two years ago after doing so much to help Chapman's career.
"Your mind just starts to wander a bit," Chapman said. "I was thinking of George all the way around -- what he would be thinking."
By that point, Chapman didn't need to focus totally on his round. After making three bogeys in the final five holes, he held on to win comfortably by two shots Sunday, wrapping up a phenomenal performance in which he held at least a share of the lead at the end of each day. The Englishman had never won on the Champions Tour, but he took control of the major championship during the final two rounds.
Chapman led by five after 54 holes and was never really threatened on the last day at Harbor Shores. He closed with a 1-over 72 -- his worst score of the tournament -- to finish at 13 under par. John Cook was second after a 69, and Hale Irwin was another stroke back after a 68.
Kenny Perry shot 31 31 62 to set a new course and PGA Championship record.

Donald wins in style, returns to World #1
Luke Donald started this week receiving the highest honour the European Tour could bestow upon him, and ended with a very classy defence of his PGA Championship and a return to the #1 spot in the world, for the 4th time..
Back at Wentworth, where he seems so comfortable, days after receiving a lifetime membership from Commissioner George O'Grady, Donald shot -4 68 to beat Scotsman Paul Lawrie 66 and England's Justin Rose 70 both at -11 by 4 shots.
Donald was at his best today, wonderfully square, balanced and accurate with his irons, wedges and putter, constantly repetitive with his classic swing and this week his driver was co-operating, he was the Luke that had such a remarkable 2011 season, and remember it was his win here over Lee Westwood that really was the catalyst to winning the Player of The Year awards on both sides of the pond. Last year it went down to the last shot, this year it was a coronation from the 15th hole in..
He now heads for the US Open at the Olympic Club in San Francisco (June 14) in search of his first major, as one of the pre tourney favourites. He will make a stop next week at Jack's Memorial tournament along with Rory, Rickie, Tiger, Phil amongst a stellar field.
