Wilson tops the leaderboard as scores tumble at the Humana Challenge

Reuters

Mark Wilson fired a career-low 62 on Friday at the Palmer Course to vault into a tie for the lead through two rounds at the Humana Challenge with Ben Crane and David Toms.

The result was three shy of the course record on the Palmer Course, which is David Duval's 59 in the final round of his 1999 victory.

Wilson started with birdies on his first three holes, then capped off the round of 10 under with a 9-footer for his eighth birdie of the day. The two-time PGA Tour champ also made a 15-footer for eagle on the 11th hole to leave him at 16-under par.

"That magic 59 number is something," said Wilson. "After I was 8‑under through 11 I don't know why the conversation went there, but we started talking to Harrison [Frazar] about his 59 over at the Nicklaus tournament course at Q‑School. So I thought about it. It kind of stalled there in the middle, but it was still a great round."

Crane birdied two of his last four holes for a sparkling nine-under-par 63 while Toms carded a six-birdie 65 on the Nicklaus Private course on another sun-splashed day in the California desert.

PGA rookie Harris English also carded a 62 but his came on the Nicklaus Course. He was three strokes off the pace in a group that included Chris Kirk (63), Bobby Gates (63) and first round co-leader Camilo Villegas (68).

Ryan Moore tied the Nicklaus Course record with a 61, yet is still five strokes back after an even-par opening round.

"The last thing I remember was being 2over through three and then I just walked off the 18th hole and I don't really remember anything after that point or in between those two points," said Moore. "You know you got to go make some birdies and sometimes you try forcing it a little bit. And I just kind of let go and just started playing some golf."

Stephen Ames of Calgary was tied for 14th at 11-under par after carding a round of 67 on the Palmer Course. David Hearn of Brantford, Ont., - also playing the Palmer layout - shot a 3-under 69 to sit at 7-under.
