Army golf for Tiger

PGA Tour Memorial Tournament scoreboard http://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/the-memorial-tournament-presented-by-nationwide/leaderboard.html

Several years ago, business millionaire magnate, Frank Stronach had Tiger Woods come up to his sparkling course up in Stouffville to put on a clinic. All of us in the media grabbed our pens, pencils, cameras, recording machines and hustled up the 404 to see the then phenom..

He was very entertaining, informative and also self effacing and I remember while discussing his driving he paused for dramatic effect  and with a twinkle said.."as some of you may have noticed I am not known for my driving ability...right ?!!"..

In his opening round at Jack's Memorial tournament, I thought a remarkable 73, he opened on the back nine with 3 bogey's on the first 4 holes, went out in 40, but scrambled back in 33. However he hit only 4 fairways, and he was missing by as much as 60 yards both right and left, the old army golf adage coming to mind..

Keep in mind this Muirfield Village course has very wide fairways by PGA Tour standards, after all Jack's members, guests and visitors from all over the world play it every day, and Tiger has beat it up for a record 5 victories.

There has been the usual mind blowing analysis by all of our experts of his swing, it is amazing how this man moves the needle no matter what the issue. As soon as he shows up, he becomes the story and always will I believe, and therein lies the rub.. is that good for golf or bad.. for example who is leading this tournament ?? Do you know, do you care ??

Well for those who do, Hideki Matsuyama trying to join Tiger as the only repeat winners at Muirfield Village has a strong back nine on his way to an -8 64 that tied the Japanese star with Bo Van Pelt who has been struggling recently, but divulged post round how this has always been his favourite event on tour apart from the Masters, ever since he was a boy growing up nearby in Indiana.

Matsuyama won the Memorial last year in a playoff. for his first win in the States.

The now single, and skinny Jason Dufner was tied for the lead with Matsuyama and Van Pelt after making a 60-foot eagle putt on the 15th hole until he closed with a double bogey to sit at -6 66 along with Scotland's Russell Knox.

Canadian scores Graham DeLaet T21 -3 69, David Hearn T32 -2 70, Adam Hadwin T68 E 72, Nick Taylor T93 +2 74.
