So Rory beat Lee 3 and 1 and Hunter beats Mark Wilson 2 and 1, both matches went to dormie 2 and were eventually conceded, but I made notes all the way this morning, and there were a lot of great shots, a cold shank and a very lucky bounce along the way.
McIlroy/ Westwood summary
Rory was 3 down after 4 holes, but won the 5th when Lee ended up against the collar, then Rory made a bomb from 35 feet to win the 6th, then won the 8th after a poor drive by Lee, to square the match.
Then at 9 Westwood miss hit a 3 wood off the tee but hit a beauty from 205 yards to 12 feet, Rory from 185 got inside him to 8 feet. Lee missed, Rory made to go 1 up at the turn.
Turning point for me was par 5 11th where Rory was wild out of bounds with his 2nd, however it bounced around the cactus, hit the cart path and ended up in a perfect lie off the green hole high. He made a beauty chip and putt for a 4, while Lee made his longer putt with a fist pump for 4 as well, it was Rory still 1 up... dodged a big bullet.
Rory then made another long putt at the par 3 12th to go 2 up, then blistered a 3wood to get on the par 5 13th in 2 while Lee's hooked drive lodged in the back of a lady's sweater prompting his caddy to aske her to "walk with it towards the green !" 2 putts for Rory to go 3up
While Lee drove the par 4 15th to make an eagle, he was still 2 down with 3 to play and eventually conceded on the 17th after a gust knocked down his 9 iron approach short of the green, a clumsy chip 10 feet past, missed putt... shake Rory's hand.... 3 and 1..
Mahan / Wilson summary
Meanwhile Scotland lost 23-16 to France in Paris in a hard fought Home International rugby match, as I watched Hunter Mahan survive a cold shank of a wedge on the 5th but he made the turn 2 up.
10 was a highlight as Hunter played a 140 yard fairway bunker shot to 4 feet, Mark Wilson then chipped in from the rough 40 feet short of the green for 3, Hunter made his 4 footer to stay 2 up...
Turning point.. after winning the par 3 12th to reduce Mahan's lead to 1 Wilson had a 12 footer to square the match at 13 after Hunter had thinned his bunker shot to the back of the green, He missed as Mahan rolled his eyes in disbelief, and that was as close as Wilson got. He eventually conceded on the 17th, losing 2 and 1
This afternoon it's Westwood vs Wilson in the consolation match and McIlroy vs Mahan in the championship match, each over 18 holes..
Lee Westwood vs Mark Wilson
I say.. Lee seemed upbeat in his interview after his match with Rory, he was 4 under for 17 holes, and seemed to work out his driver which got ragged in the middle of the match. He played well but Rory made 6 birdies in 8 holes from 5 -12 to get 3 up. Mark was good in his match, but missed a few like the 13th that he had been making all week and he will have trouble handling Westwood's power this afternoon in the all PING match.
RESULT...Mark Wilson wins 1up
Rory McIlroy vs Hunter Mahan
I say.. Now that Rory has made it to the final, and come back from 3 down to beat Lee I can't help but think he will be free to turn loose the dogs this afternoon, and I think Hunter who has been superb all week will do well to get this match past the 16 green.. Rory has too many guns blazing after that slow start at 7.30am this morning.
RESULT.. Mahan wins 2 and 1
