Another 5 day shift done and dusted the the heat and humidity of a hopelessly overcrowded weekend at Thomson Park, makes way to a lovely cool, clean Tuesday morning shagbag.
Having my own truck at work means I can keep up with the Jays and the sports updates, including a heroic 4-1 Denmark win over Russia in the Euro 2020, at home in Copenhagen no less, as great a COVID treat as that nation could receive.
US Open final scoreboard here
Mac Hughes had missed 5 cuts in a row, missed 6 cuts in 9 majors, never inside top 40, so to be tied for the lead after 3 rounds at Torrey Pines was about as good as it gets. Even with a 2 bogey start on a very very tough south course, he was just a shot off the lead after 9 holes.
However a double crossed attempted cut 5 iron at the par 3 11th ended up in a tree after bouncing on the cart path. Strong medicine #1 needed after the resulting double bogey 5 which ended his chances. A +6 77 T15 (strong medicine #2) will go in the record books along with the 2 birdie finish featured in Jon Rahm's win, however what we won't see there until he plays again, perhaps this week, is the confidence Hughes takes with him.
Rahm 1st -6 #2,250,000 Mac Hughes T15 +1 $179,279 7 shots worth over $2m....strong medicine #3..
The old adage " If it doesn't kill ya, it will make you stronger"
" I'll leave here with a lot of confidence knowing I was in there for 63 holes with the best players in the world. I've just got to get better, plain and simple."
He plays again this week at the Travelers Championship along with Nick Taylor, Michael Gligic, Adam Hadwin and Roger Sloan.
There are 2 more majors this week.
1. KPMG Women's PGA Championship
Having missed the cut last week and had a W/D the week before, Brooke Henderson arrives with her sister back on the bag in John's Creek Georgia, at the Atlanta Athletic Club for a major she won in 2016 and finished 2nd in 2017 at this KPMG Women's PGA Championship. Alena Sharpe is the other Canadian. It's the 2nd major in 3 weeks on the LPGA. Thursday tee times are here.
2. Bridgestone Senior Players
Both Stephen Ames and Mike Weir are in great form recently on the Champions Tour, both with wins, and Weirsy a top 10 machine thus far.
They are in Akron Ohio at the tough narrow tree lined south course at the Firestone CC. Harvey Firestone built the park on which the course was designed in 1929 for his employees at the Firestone Tire and Rubber company.
If memory serves me Tiger won here 6 times including his "shot in the dark" at the 2000 WGC event which he won by 11 strokes.
Symetra Tour: Prasco Charity Championship
In recent year's I've paid less attention to this feeder tour for the LPGA but a word of praise her for Quebec's Maude- Aimee LeBlanc who looks set to play her way onto the LPGA next year.
She's had top 10's two weeks in a row, and has 4 top 10's including 3 in 2nd place so far this year, where she's 4th on the money list, with the top 10 players moving up. The long hitter is 2nd in scoring with 70.1 and has 103 birdies (3rd). There are 9 Canadians in the field down in Cincinnati.
