" Man, this is one of the hardest courses we play all year, including majors," said co-leader Webb Simpson who shares the lead with Alex Noren at -4 66 in steady wind on a penal PGA National golf course, in Palm Beach Gardens.
Mackenzie Hughes had a brilliant round of -3 67 including a bogey from a bunker on #9 on a typical Florida course, all wind and water, and more water and as a result only 20 players broke the par of 70. 76 or worse was not uncommon as Ben Silverman found out at +8 78.
Corey Conners had a very creditable par 70.
Other notables: Playing the course backwards Tiger Woods had only one bad hole, a double bogey 7 on the par-5 third hole for E 70.
Locals, Justin Thomas, Daniel Berger and Morgan Hoffmann and noted wind player Louis Oosthuizen all shot -3 67.
Rory McIlroy went for the par 5 18th in two, missed by a foot, got wet, double bogey 7 led to a +2 72.
With round 2 in more wind gusting at 30km underway, the cut is predicted at +4.
