Simpson must be favourite to win PGA Tour money title and Player of the Year

This really may be obvious, but with Webb Simpson sitting just 2 shots off the lead as play gets under way at the McGladry Classic, he must be considered the odds on favourite to win the Money title and with it the Player of the Year on the PGA Tour.

Unless he collapses completely today, and that will not happen, he has two shots at that title and Luke just one.

The math tells the story. First prize is $720,000 this week, $846,000 next week at Disney. Donald leads Simpson by nearly $70,000.

Simpson has won 2 of his last 5 starts. In a best case scenario for him, he wins this week and will be $650,000 or so, up on Luke, meaning Luke will have to win next week and hope that Webb doesn't make enough to cover.

Second place will collect winnings of $432,000 (assuming second place isn’t tied) and yes it gets a wee bit complicated, but suffice to say, Simpson can really put the boots to Donald's hopes of winning all the marbles on both sides of the Atlantic with a solid afternoon today.

It's in his hands, and the way he has been playing that makes him the favourite.

Furthermore, while I have Luke as the winner of Player of the Year here with his 13 top 10's,  his win at the Accenture Match Play, his domination of the scoring stats and I must say his willingness to travel and play at the highest standard as the world's #1 around the world while Webb sits at home in the States, there are more than enough American pundits who are not as convinced as I am, and a win here this week would give them the ammo they need to give the nod to Simpson.

Simpson is the favourite but it does make for bonus coverage today and next week doen't it.
