Van Zyl shoots 61 to lead in sunny Turkey..

European Tour Turkish Airlines Open leaderboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2015/tournamentid=2015088/leaderboard/index.html#M522HRReJgMV83uc.97

The playoffs for the Race to Dubai kicks off on the south coast of Turkey with most of Europe's top stars in the field with round one well under way.

Lee Westwood is enjoying his return Europe from Florida after the split with his long time wife over the summer, he's was all over the flag this morning and shot -8 64 to sit 2nd to a stunning -11 61 by
South African Jaco Van Zyl to beat the record of 62 held by RaphaĆ«l Jacquelin, although his achievement will not go in the record books as preferred lies were in play due to recent heavy rain.

He has four top tens this year but has yet to break through with a win on this European Tour
Lanky Chris Wood who is -44 to par in his last 11 rounds was the early clubhouse leader at -6 66 and that stood up al day while scrambling Rory McIlroy is in a pack at -5 67. He finished his day like this on the 18th. ....His drive was away left and ended up by a tree, he had to play out left handed before putting his third shot short of the green, followed by a poor chip some 10 feet shy but he holed the putt for a momentum giving par !!
There are 78 players in the field and scoring is low, you have to go down to 62nd place to find anyone over par. The weather is ideal, sunny calm and hot, this Montgomerie Maxx course has 5 par fives so plenty of room for birdies and better..
