JB Holmes tames the new Blue Monster..

PGA Tour WGC-Cadillac Championship scoreboard http://espn.go.com/golf/leaderboard?tour=pga

I've watched JB Holmes play some really good golf so far this year and he took that fine form up a notch at the new Gil Hanse designed Blue Monster with an unbelievable -10 62 that tied the tournament record and gave him a four-shot lead over this world-class field on a course he never liked before the changes.

"One of my least favorite tracks on tour," he said of the previous design. "It was just too easy. I felt like for a World Golf Championship, 22 under winning shouldn't really happen. It's a very difficult golf course. I played great today."

Holmes you may remember lost earlier this year at Torrey Pines in a playoff, and was T10 at Pebble Beach.

How tough was the new Blue Monster ?..Well the average score was 73.4, meaning that Holmes was more than 11 shots better than the field.  His 62 matched the tournament record set by Bubba Watson at Doral in 2012. Gil Hanse renovated the Blue Monster for Donald Trump to make it more sensational with so much water hugging the fairways and greens.

Rory McIlroy was all over the map going out in 40 strokes before finishing with an eagle, three birdies and two bogeys for 33, that allowed him to get in with 73, while Phil Mickelson shot 74 without a birdie for the first time in 186 rounds, if you weren't counting..

Ryan Moore who is also in good form so far this year was keeping pace with Holmes but like so many on this windy warm south Florida day, hit his tee shot into the water on the par-5 18th hole and made double bogey to finish 2nd with a 66.

Others in the hunt.. Dustin Johnson had four birdies in a five-hole stretch for 68, along with Alexander Levy and Rickie Fowler. Henrik Stenson after a month off, had six birdies and joined Brooks Koepka at 69.  Adam Scott with a conventional sized putter was in the group at 70.
