Garret Willis has been a terrible putter, down to 177th in putting stats, but he made 6 birdies in a row, one putting 5 of them to lead the Heritage by a shot with a nifty -7, 64. He has only made 2 cuts this year and missed another one last week in Texas after a pair of 78's.
That's why all these guys who are struggling keep plugging away, in the hopes that one week it will all start to click again. Can anyone say Weirsy !!..
Notes
*there was a 2 hour rain delay so 18 guys did not finish
* even Ernie Els has tried switching to the long putter but he still struggled to a 75 and was assessed a two-stroke penalty for testing the playing surface by raking a bunker of his footprints before his shot
*Luke Donald the pre tourney favourite made three birdies over his final six holes to salvage a mediocre round -4, 67
* and another reminder of how fragile our lives are... Matt Bettencourt's shot -6 65. He totaled his car driving to the tournament when he hit a camper top that fell off the car in front of him. Fortunately he and his wife escaped unscathed.
