PGA Tour : Valero Texas Open Results
We knew it would be a two horse race in Texas, and remember, I used the track and field term 'the rabbit" to describe Akshay Bhatia as he charged to a 36 hole 6 shot lead.
In the blue ribbon1500 meters the rabbit charges out at an impossible pace for 800 meters then desperately hangs on hoping to outlast the chasers to the finish line.
Well, Denny McCarthy's astonishing 63 with a 28 back nine, eight of nine holes birdied had caught the rabbit, playing partner Bhatia just before the finish line, forcing a playoff at -20. Neither player deserved to "lose", sadly McCarthy dumped his wedge approach in the creek at the par 5,600 yard 18th playoff , resulting in a 6 and handing Bhatia the win with a birdie 4.
Bhatia 63 70 68 67 -20, McCarthy 68 70 67 63 -20
I will say both these players were brilliant, and Bhatia if you haven't seen him, is a six foot two inch string bean lefty who produced an awesome display of shotmaking, working the ball at will for his first 72 hole victory that has him off to Augusta with the last spot available this week, amongst all the other "winners" benefits.
Canadians
Corey Conners T25 70 71 75 68 -4
Adam Svensson T51 69 75 77 67 E
Ben Silverman 81st 71 72 79 73 +7
Masters
Four Canadians join the 89 man field at Augusta, Mike Weir still playing after his 2003 win, then Corey Conners, Adam Svensson and Adam Hadwin have qualified.
Rory rallied to be 3rd with a Sunday 66 that will have him in good form as he tries again for the grand slam and of course the ever present Scottie Scheffler, along with defending champion Jon Rahm who has disappeared since joining LIV will be three of the many story lines heading into Thursday.
