Although Stephen Ames spent his early years in Canada with his first wife Jodi in Calgary where he became a Canadian citizen, he is originally from Trinidad and Tobago where he learned to play golf with his grandmother.
An island boy at heart, he remarried to Kelly Norcott, moved to Vancouver then bought his dream home in the Turks and Caicos in 2020. I've known Stephen a long time especially when Sean Foley who was kind enough to be our Golf Pro on my Fairways radio show, was his coach. Stephen seems to play best in warm weather, maybe it's in his DNA.
He has spent the last month living in Hawaii, says he's been practising and working out, and while he contemplates buying another home there, he went out and shot a trouble free opening -6 66 T3 two shots off the Ernie Els lead of -8 64 on the Hualalai GC.
Ames won his first PGA Champions Tour at this event in 2017 beating Bernard Langer by 4 shots.
Mike Weir has opened with a bogey free -3 69 T19.
