PGA Tour : Thursday
Here we go for 2022, albeit a small select field of 2021 winners on the island of Maui at the renown Plantation Course at Kapalua, with a very rewarding $8m purse.
It's not a hit and giggle for sure, but pros traditionally take their families with them over the new year and many hang around for the first full field event next week, the Sony Open over on Oahu, just on the outskirts of Honolulu.
For full tee times/leaderboard click on my link above. There are no Canadians in the 38 man field.
If you have never been to Hawaii it is an interesting dichotomy. I'd suggest that it's great to get out there and visit for 2 or 3 weeks, but you'd be hard pressed to live there. This article may well open your eyes as to why https://www.livinginhawaii.com/12-reasons-you-should-not-move-to-hawaii/
It was always a dream of mine to go there which I fulfilled several times in the mid 80's. You can do the touristy thing and stay at one of the massive hotels right on Waikiki beach, or take a short flight to one of the islands like Maui where you can stay in the absolute lap of luxury, or travel inland where the inhabitants live to get a real picture of how poor their daily life is.
Whatever you do the weather is never below 55*f or above 100*f and there is always a breeze. It's a 12 hour straight flight from Toronto, most flights from here go through a stop in Vancouver. When I first saw the islands from the air, dark green foliage covering the mountains turquoise water white beaches around the shores, it is breath taking especially if you do it from the dead of winter here.
Remember you are as close to Japan as you are to the west coast and part of it's charm is the people from the likes of Japan, Australia and New Zealand who holiday there as well.
By the way there is a public course on Oahu, one of the few but the local government likes to reserve tee time there for the residents. Golf like most other things for tourists is not cheap in Hawaii, but here's a little secret.
My fiance at the time was a flight attendant for Wardair who made a living flying charters to Hawaii from all over Canada. So I would fly standby for a $25.00 fee if a seat became available on her flight, then we'd stay free in the rooms Wardair reserved for their staff. One of the times that life threw me a gift basket !!!
