A ''snowman' changes everything in Mexico.. Mac Hughes in contention.. Full scoreboard/ Sunday tee times

PGA Tour : Worldwide Technology Championship. Leaderboard  Tee Times

With brilliant blue skies, and a hot Mexican sun in Los Cabos, the sight of this Worldwide Technology Championship, you wouldn't expect to find a snowman.

Neither did Matt Kuchar who went out in 29 with an eagle and 6 birdies and was running away from the field with 3 more birdies in a row now at -10, coming in intent on winning this event for the second time.

The Snowman :

At the par 4 15th, he hooked his drive into an unplayable lie in thick bushes. He took a provisional,  now 3 off the tee, His fourth was pulled left of the elevated green. His 5th, a chip up the bank came back down past him into the waste area. His 6th, with a hybrid came back down the hill as well, with his 7th he finally got up and down for the most unlikely 8 or in golfing parlance 'a snowman".

His lead went from 6 shots to 2, then with a superb chip to save a bogey at the 16th, he ends up with -4 67, tied for the lead at -19 with Camilo Villegas 64 64 69 -19 as we head into Sunday.

Enter Mackenzie Robert Hughes who had opened the week as he has so often in this off year with E 71, T88. His best finish all year after winning the Sanderson Farms back in October 2022 during the Fall wrap around, was T5 at the Dell Match Play, in 27 events he made the cut 15 times but missed it 12.

Before the ZOZO Championship, Hughes called up his friend / caddie since 2020 Jace Walker and told him he needed a change " I just told him I needed something fresh, I had not had a great year, it's no fun doing that. My caddie and I were really close and it's a tough decision to make"

He missed the top 50 in the FedEx standings by just 28 FedEx Cup points and is currently 57th with this and the RSM Classic, which he has also won, left to make that top 50, and all the bling that brings.

Long time looper and fellow Canadian, Julien Trudeau filled in during their week in Japan and is with him now.

He bounced back on Friday with -6 65 and began Saturday eagle, birdie, birdie added another at the 6th and 4 more on his back nine -9 63 and a T4 -17 total right in contention two shots back, after Kuchar let the rest of the chasing pack in.

Other Canadians: Taylor Pendrith T28 72 66 67 -11  Adam Svensson T52 71 67 69 -9

Leaders:

12.20 1st Patton Kizzire -15, Scott Piercy -15, Michael Kim -15

12.31 1st Mac Hughes -17, Will Gordon -17, Justin Suh -17

12.42 1st  Matt Kuchar -19, Camilo Villegas -19, Eric van Rooyen -18

There are 11 players within 4 shots and 16 within 5 as this Sunday shootout begins. As I've said all week, all have issues that need resolving..

They will all need the same thing...a birdie barrage..
