While the likes of Rory, Tom, Ryo, Rickie and Matteo are amongst a crop of young guns taking the pro golf world by storm, there is another young guy from Southport, England who is setting the Challenge Tour on it's ear and is about to burst onto the world stage as early as next year..
His name is Tommy Fleetwood, he is 20 years old and has just fired 67,61 to take the lead halfway through the Apulia San Domenico Grand Final, the season finale at -14, 3 shots clear. If Fleetwood were to add this title to his victory at the money-spinning Kazakhstan Open, he would become the youngest Rankings winner in the history of the Challenge Tour, and the second highest money winner after Italian Edoardo Molinari in 2009.
bio..Fleetwood has been tipped for the very top from an early age by John Petrie, Chief Executive of the English Golf Union, who believes there is no doubt he will make it into the top 20 in the World Ranking. An illustrious amateur career ended with him being listed at the very top of the Scratch Players World Amateur Rankings, thanks largely to his victories at the English Amateur Championship and the Boys Home Internationals in 2010. Almost won on his Challenge Tour debut as an amateur at the English Challenge, where he finished second by a single stroke. Two more runner-up finishes followed after he had joined the professional ranks, firstly at the 2010 M2M Russian Challenge Cup and later at the 2011 Rolex Trophy, before he went one better in Kazakhstan, taking the title by two strokes. His victory, which propelled him to the top of the Challenge Tour Rankings, was made all the sweeter as it was achieved with his Dad, Pete, on his bag.
So while the golfing world waits yet again for the next Tiger sighting next week in Sydney, Australia, the future of the game in in good hands, albeit very young hands, and you can add Tommy Fleetwood to that list..
