Mark Wilson wins the Sony in Hawaii..

Mark Wilson..?? who.. shot a bogey free 65, 67 to beat Tim Clark and Steve Marino to win the Sony Open in Oahu in Hawaii to get exempt for 2 years, book a trip to the Masters, US Open and the Open, his 3rd win at 36 years old and proof that " these guys can play"

At 5'8" this straight shooting grinder shot -8 today 65 67 264 -16 to beat a steady if unspectacular field over 36 holes today in calm conditions at the Wailae GC

Another straight shooter Tim Clark who credits an equipment change from Srixon to Titliest for his success, shot 66,64 266 -14 to finish 2nd along with Steve Marino 66,68 266 -14

Kingston's Matt McQuillan finshed 2nd last in the 56 man field with a 71,74 Sunday....

Here's the AP story as Wilson joins Jonathan Byrd as the first 2 winners on the PGA tour this year..

Mark Wilson made it through a marathon Sunday at the Sony Open in Hawaii without a bogey and held on for a two-shot victory that earns him his first trip to the Masters.

Wilson shot a 5-under 65 in the morning to take a one-shot lead into the afternoon round. He built a four-shot lead at the turn, then had to hang on when Tim Clark and Steve Marino made late runs on different sides of Waialae.

Clark birdied three of his last four holes, and narrowly missed an eagle putt on the ninth hole for a 64. Marino made two late birdies, then hit a fairway metal with his feet in the bunker and the ball on the side of a hill about chest-high. He managed to reach the green, but his eagle putt turned away for a 66.

Wilson made one last birdie for a 67 to earn his third career victory.

Schwartzel defends his title at the Joburg Open

I'm watching this tape delayed on the Golf Channel right now ( they have a nasty habit of televising it as if it's live), but Charl Schwartzel has successfully defended his title at the Joburg Open.. They started the day in driving rain and have finished in the sunshine, with Schwartzel making birdie on his 72nd to finish in style..

He has now been 1st, 2nd ,2nd and 4th in this South African swing.. !!

(Here's an AP report)

AP : Charl Schwartzel successfully defended his Joburg Open title on Sunday, birdieing the last hole for a 4-under 67 that gave him a four-stroke victory.

The South African finished at 19-under 265, overcoming a midround wobble at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club. Overnight co-leader and compatriot Garth Mulroy shot a 71 to finish second in the last of four events on the European Tour's season-opening South African swing.

Thomas Aiken, also of South Africa, had a 72 and was another shot back in third. England's Jamie Elson was another stroke back in fourth, one shot ahead of Frenchman Jean-Baptiste Gonnet, who was alone in fifth.

The top five players all qualified for next week's $2.7 million Abu Dhabi Golf Championship

Schwartzel said afterward..
I got my nose ahead, but coming into nine I hit it slightly too hard and over the back," Schwartzel said. "It was a bad bogey for me and things started to get shaky from there. I had to really dig deep out there on the back nine.

"My putting and short game came to my rescue and that's what you need to do to win tournaments."

I thought the par 4 11th was the turning point with Charl in trouble off the tee, he had to lay up. Both Aiken and Mulroy were a shot behind and they hit great drives, but both attacked a very well tucked pin and both came up short in the deep wet rough. They both made bogey, while Charl stuffed a wedge to 4 feet and made par, a 2 shot swing.

Play is underway as McQuillan makes cut.. Appleby /Maruyama lead in Hawaii

Thanks to three birdies at the close of his second round, Stuart Appleby( 64 66 130) is atop the leader board again at the Sony Open. Fan favorite Shigeki Maruyama is also at 10 under (65 65 130)

The cut was to be the nearest number of players to 60th place to keep the field small for the 36-hole final. Anyone finishing in the top 70 will still receive credit for a cut, along with money and FedEx Cup points, and that's what happened to David Hearn With a fine -2 68 he made it into the top 70, but at -1 so he will not play.. MDF 82 David Hearn 71 68 139 ...

To keep the field small so they can get 36 holes in today they only let the players close to 60th play and that number fell at -3, and that's right where Matt McQuillan ended up..T42 1 61 Matt McQuillan -3 8:30am 68 69 137

Chris Baryla had 5 bogey's and a double on his way to +4 74 so he MC, still a nice honeymoon for Chris and his new bride in Hawaii and now he will fly off to the desert for next week's scorefest, the Bob Hope Classic, where Mike Weir and Stephen Ames will join the fray..

Play is underway and by my count there are 20 players within 4 shots of the leaders right now so we have an old fashioned shootout with 36 to play today.. Who's putter will be hottest ??

Here is how Appleby described his round last night
Yeah, today got off to a quick start with a birdie on our first hole, being the 10th. Lots of pars coming in. Hit a poor tee shot on 17 that tugged into the stands and didn't get it up-and-down. Managed to birdie 18, which was very, very approachable today, so turned at 1-under. Pretty Plain Jane sort of nine, nothing special. I tugged it in the water on 2 so ended up making I guess a good bogey there. And lots of pars coming in, nothing super-special.

And then hit a very poor tee shot, another tugged shot again, 6-iron again actually, on 7, a really bad shot and managed to get really lucky and chip it in. And knocked it to probably two feet on 8 for birdie and then a two-putt on nine holing a three-footer for the birdie. So yeah, three birdie finish was good, nice finish to the day.
And then obviously tomorrow we've got a bit of a sprint, I guess, even though it's going to take all day, from daylight to what's left of the daylight. I think it'll take us all day.
A bit of a crap shoot. There's lots of guys in this tournament absolutely. So it'll be a very interesting finish.

Now Maruyama who is playing on a sponsors exemption and who hasn't won since 2003..

I'm very grateful to the sponsor Sony for giving me a sponsor's exemption. I feel very honored to receive that exemption, and I'm glad I'm playing well to show them that I am grateful. It's been a while since I had those two good rounds together, and I'm looking forward to tomorrow.

This course, Waialae Country Club, really fits my game. I'm not a real long hitter, but the fairways are always firm here, so you always get a run-out on your drives. On the mainland a lot of the courses you just hit and you have to carry it a long ways, which I don't do very well. But here, the length suits my game. In fact, the whole course suits my game.

Appleby leads the Sony, McQuillan T24... Round 3 underway in Joburg.

In soft condition and only a light breeze, 65 players in the 144-man field broke par on this rain soaked Waialae Country Club in Honolulu, Hawaii which is protected somewhat by a par of 70..

Stuart Appleby who finished 30th last week is the best of the bunch with his -6 64 after round one.

Appleby shot 30 on the back nine, including a chip-in from the front of the 12th green. Then he holed a 5-iron from 165 yards for eagle on the 16th , then made a 30 footer for birdie on the 17th

That gave him a one-shot lead over nine players including Matt Kuchar (65) and Justin Rose (65)

Applebys round at a glance: 10/14 fairways, 15/18 greens, 28 putts.

Rookie Matt McQuillan of Kingston, Ont., was in a large group T24 at 2-under 68, while Chris Baryla of Vernon, B.C., is T113, +3 73, and David Hearn of Brantford, Ont., finished T85, +1 71.

McQuillan's up and down round started on the front 9 with 4 birdies and 3 bogey's, then he came home with 3 birdies and 2 bogey's for his -2 68..(.*note.. I told you about one of his rookie playing partners Michael Thompson yesterday.. well he is dead last after a +10, 80 which included 9 bogey's and a double !!! yikes)

David Hearn starting on the 10th, had a steady string of pars except for a bogey at 13, but took a double on the first and a bogey on 6, but fought back with 3 birdies for his +1 71

Chris Baryla also was off the 10th, and had nothing but pars on the way out, but then made bogey on 4 of his first 6 holes on the way in, recovered with a birdie on the 8th, but still an opening +3 73 so he needs a big round today to make the cut..

Because an entire round was washed out, the plan is to play the second round today, followed by a 36-hole marathon on Sunday

Schwartzel's 61 gets him into a tie for the lead in Joburg.. Play underway in Hawaii

Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club has 2 courses, the east and west, well one was really the Kensington GC, but they decided to amalgamate when a housing developer acquired some of the land that course was on.

The west course is the easier of the two and I just watched Charl Schwartzel flirt with 59, settling in the end for a -10 61 and a tie for the lead at -13 with Garth Mulroy (RSA -7 64) and Jamie Elson (ENG -7,64)

Schwartzel is 32nd in the world, a graduate of the Ernie Els golf academy, and this year he has already had 2 seconds and a T4 in 3 events, and he is the defending champ here.. I fully expect him to become a top 20 player at least.

His father, George, was a fine amateur and his brother Adrian has caddied for Charl and is apparently a fine player himself.
Schwartzel has already won the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit 3 times and has won 6 times around the world
He got his tour card when he was just over 18.

Most of the field have completed round 2, the remaining few will finish Saturday morning, weather permitting. 3 hours were lost today due to summer thunderstorms, and more are in the forecast for the weekend.

Mulroy and Elson's 64's were on the tougher East Course where the final 2 rounds will be staged.

Round 1 rained out at Sony in Hawaii

Rain has washed out round 1 at the Sony Hawaiian Open.. Here's the PGA tour.com report

Done for the day at Waialae

There will be no golf played at Waialae Country Club on Thursday because the heavy rains have rendered the course unplayable. The first round will now be played on Friday and the second on Saturday with a 36-hole Sunday finish.

Saturday’s cut will be to the number nearest 60 rather than the low 70s and ties.

Here's what the pros said on Twitter

PaulGoydosPGA Big News!! Ian Poulter is having a clothing sale!! Now I now what to do during the weather delay

JEFFKLAUKpga Back to bed! No golf today. Makes for a lot of golf next 3 days.

ZachJohnsonPGA Play suspended…again! Practice facilities closed all day too. Course is really stressed. Movie? Aquarium? Workout? Nap? Swim? Run? Eat?

ZachJohnsonPGA Wish I had EA Sports “Tiger Woods ’12″ so I could at least practice Augusta Natl! Instead, aquarium with the boys!

PaulStankowski I have not miss hit a shot in 2 days!!! Wait a minute…I haven’t HIT a shot in 2 days! Rain rain go away…it’s on tomorrow! Maybe.

AaronBadds Cancelled play for the day! Another family day!! It’s a win win situation! Love being with my fam!!

RStanleyJohnson 9 mile run to the course and back. Felt ok. Little heavy in the end. Nice gym session after here at the Hilton. This place is still soaked

djbrigman First round postponed till Friday, apparently there is truth to being on island time.

JustinRose99 Play been canned for the day. Practice facilities closed for 2nd straight day! Interesting preparation! Rookies will be itching to go!

Rose wasn’t kidding. Here’s what a few of the rookies had to say…

stallingsgolf (Scott Stallings) My first round on tour is postponed until tomorrow, course is unplayable. Two days in a row with no golf.

JhonattanVegas Rainy day @SonyOpen. Wet course. Dia lluvioso, campo muy mojado http://yfrog.com/h3zc1rj

Brendan_Steele Rain in Hawaii. Going to have to wait at least one more day for the PGA Tour Debut

But 2010 Kodak Challenge winner Troy Merritt was online with some encouragement.

TROYMERRITT_PGA Hey, @Brendan_Steele, only delaying that first birdie a little longer!

Of course, not everyone got a day off.

TheSirNickFaldo Hawaii !! :( …no golf at Sony … still do the show..stay tuned :) http://yfrog.com/h2ff2dtj

My memory

Guys in the mid 80's I was engaged to a Canadian Airlines flight attendant, one of the great loves of my life so I won't name her and we went to Hawaii at least once a year for 4 years

Waialae is on Oahu, Hawaii's main island, the home of Honolulu and Waikiki beach. The course is tucked in behind Diamondback volcano which is a popular route for we runners every morning, but is at or below sea level so with all this rain is has little or no tolerance as a water table, and as a result it is now saturated and with rain in the forecast all weekend we have problems..

Stay tuned folks..

So Matt McQuillan plays his first ever PGA tour round with Michael Thompson, former world #1 amateur in 2008, who played the Hooters Tour last year and qualified like Matt via Q school and also Tommy "2 gloves" Gainey who won Big Break VII on the golf channel and played the Nationwide Tour last year..Matt gave up on golf following 2006 for personal and financial reasons, but last year decided to give it one more try, playing most of last season on the EGolf Tour. He is from Kingston..

David Hearn is is from Brantford, allow he learned to play up at Pike Lake and he is back on tour for his 2nd term having secured his status by finishing in the top 25 of the Nationwide Tour money list last year. In 2005 he finished 196th on the PGA tour
His elbow injury has cleared up and he told me in a text that "this time around I will know all the courses, where to stay etc etc" which he expects will give him a better shot at success
He is playing with Michael Putnam who T6 at Qschool and played on the Nationwide last year and Peter Tomasulo, another Nationwider who was 23rd on their money list last year

Chris Baryla, hasn't played on tour since the 2010 Shell Houston Open following which he gave in to a nagging back and had surgery. He was granted a major medical exemption for 2011 but as you will remember went out to Q school and gained full status there by T11..
He plays with Kevin Kisner who finished 11th on the Nationwide tour last year with a win and a 2nd place to his credit, and Zack Miller, another Nationwider who T6 at Qschool

Joburg Open

Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club

europeantour report... The European Tour brings its South African sojourn to an end this week with the richest of the country's four co-sanctioned events, the €1.3 million Joburg Open.

Following hugely successful tournaments in Malelane and Durban before Christmas, followed by last week’s event in East London, the city of Johannesburg takes centre stage this week and the beautiful Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club.
Celebrating its fifth anniversary, the Joburg Open sees Charl Schwartzel return as defending champion looking to win for the fifth time in his homeland.

The first round is in the books already and here is a europeantour report...

Martin Maritz and Tyrone Mordt began the Joburg Open with nine under par rounds of 62 to share the lead after the opening day.

And while Mordt's bogey-free round on the West Course at Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club was impressive,Maritz's score on the more difficult East Course was truly sensational.

Only four of the day's top 26 scores came from the East Course - players play both courses over the first two days, with all the weekend's action on the East Course.
