This was as fine a Hollywood finish as it gets, and the hero rides off into the sunset, sending us all home happy.
Rory McIlroy just added to his legend, as if he needed to at home in Ireland.
I followed him all morning and he was playing well after a bogey start of all things, he went out in 32. He caught the leaders by the turn at -14.
He was playing steadily, safely at times, with just a birdie at the 13th he was tied at -15. However Swedish sensation Joakim Lagergren who shot a course record 62 on Friday, had the shot of the day with a 260 yard 3 wood approach to the par 5 15th soared toward the back pin and landed softly just 8 feet away, prompting an eagle 3 and a -17 total.
Suddenly Rory stood on the 72nd two shots out of the lead.
His drive was good, his approach into the heart of the green, and when you see the replay, the massive crowd held their breath as it rolled right into the center of the hole 30 feet away.
Pandemonium !! Playoff !!
After sharing birdie 4's twice up the 18th, Rory made it his 3rd while the Swede made 5 after finding water, and Rory became the Story once again !
