PGA Tour : ZOZO Championship full leaderboard here
Tiger Woods won the inaugural ZOZO Championship in 2019 at the Accordia Golf Narashino CC in Chiba, Japan worth official prize money $1.77m. Patrick Cantlay won $1.44m in 2020 in California due to COVID restrictions and Hideki Matsuyama won it back in Japan in 2021 worth 1.79m.
Outside of the playoffs, the majors, the Invitationals, the Players and the WGCs the huge 1st prize this year of $1.98m at the ZOZO is the best of all the others.
More importantly, there is the matter of the ahem, ahem, appearance fees. Setting the table in 2019 you know the sponsor gave Tiger a lot more than he won just for showing up and bringing world wide attention with it. It's one of the games long standing shady areas of undisclosed boondoggle.
That in part explains the strong 77 man field with no cut, that makes the trip half way around the world to Japan, a field that includes Mac Hughes, Corey Connors and Adam Svensson.
A popular name that's has been out of the picture for 3 years, Rickie Fowler who has returned to Butch Harmon to sort out his game has shot 67 63 -10, tied atop the weekend leaderboard with another American, Andrew Putnam.
Hughes fresh off his win 2 weeks ago in Vegas is T34 70 68 -2
Connors T49 73 67 E, while Svensson is T59 74 78 +2
