The Nedbank Challenge is played in Sun City, RSA and the Gary Player CC course features tight undulating fairways and small sloping greens. It's a second shot venue with a premium on accuracy of the tee.
As soon as I saw the field I thought Sergio Garcia should do well here this week especially after his recent win on a similar course set up at Valderrama.
It's no surprise he has been the star of round 1 with a superbly controlled -8 64. He birdied the first and never really looked back. He leads by 4 shots in ideal sunny South African weather.
The Spaniard has won twice before at Gary Player Country Club before this event joined the European Tour International Schedule and his -8 was his lowest round in Sun City since he claimed his first title in 2001 when it was an 18 man

Since being selected as a captain's pick for the Ryder Cup by Thomas Bjørn, Garcia has had a T10 at the Portugal Masters, won three points at Le Golf National to become Europe's all-time leading scorer and won the Andalucia Valderrama Masters.
