PGA Tour Honda Classic final leaderboard https://www.pgatour.com/competition/2018/the-honda-classic/leaderboard.html
On Sunday evening when the wind was finally settling down, and the heat of the day was gone in Palm Beach Gardens, Justin Thomas calmly made a 4 birdie putt to win this Honda Classic for his 8th career victory and a spot at #3 in the world just ahead of his best pal Jordan Spieth.
As he often does he won it in style after sticking a wedge just outside the leather for a birdie on the 72nd, and then just smoking a utility wood well over 250 yards in the playoff, with water everywhere, onto the18th green and a birdie that Luke List just couldn't match.
With Tiger's run abruptly halted again by a bogey into the water at the 15th, then 3 putts on 16, I got to thinking who are the Big 3 now, or even who is the best.
Here are the OWR http://www.owgr.com/. Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, Justin Rose, Hideki Matsuyama, Rickie Fowler, Jason Day, Brooks Koepka, Rory McIlroy in that order.
Back in 2016 the Big3 were Rory, Jason and Jordan, each having had their sensational summers, Rory in '14, Jason in '15 when he won the RBC Canadian then 3 of the next 5 only to lose Player of the Year to Jordan Spieth who won 5 times including 2 majors.
Since then Rory has struggled, much of that down to injury, Jason Day and his wife welcomed a new daughter after his sensational run, and he's only now starting to show some of that lost form, and Jordan has had his moments, he is the defending Open champion, but nowhere near as domineering as 2015.
Since 2016 Dustin Johnson has earned his #1 spot, when he is on form he simply looks unbeatable, but his future is still being written and will be defined by the majors. He of course won the US Open in 2016.
Jon Rahm has been the world's hottest golfer since late in 2017 with 3 wins and a couple of top 10's recently, while Justin Rose narrowly lost the Race to Dubai title after a 3 win run.
After a 2017 season of five victories, including his first major at the PGA Championship, topped by walking away with the Fed Ex Cup Justin Thomas has won twice this 2018 season, including the CJ Cup in Korea last fall.
I can't think of anyone who can top that right now, can you?

Tiger's performance, a win win week at the Honda Classic.
PGA Tour Honda Classic leaderboard https://www.pgatour.com/competition/2018/the-honda-classic/leaderboard.html
The leaderboard after 3 windblown rounds at this Honda Classic on the TPC National in Palm Beach Gardens will show, 33 year old grinder Luke List as the leader 71 66 66 -7 while Justin Thomas birdied two of his last 4 holes 67 72 65 -6, and Webb Simpson 66 72 66 -6 are both a shot back.
Race to Dubai winner Tommy Fleetwood 70 68 67 -5 and Jamie Love 68 69 68 -5 are T4. Perhaps Fleetwood who is playing more in the US this year after his big success in Europe last season will be buoyed by his friend and fellow countryman Eddie Pepperell's first Tour win, in Qatar, some 13 hours away.
The big news is that Tiger Woods is playing a PGA Tour event on a Sunday for the first time in 3 1/2 years.
With rounds of 70 71 69 E he is T11 seven shots off the lead so will not be your winner, however his play in the wind this week has shown all those watching that he has taken giant steps in his fitness, and the way he has driven the ball, controlled his distance, moved the ball both ways at will, shown consistency throughout the bag including his putter makes it obvious that as we used to say:
"he's back, ok 85% of the way" After missing the cut last week at Riviera, the Tiger swagger, mannerisms, confidence are all on display this week, playing minutes from his mansion in Jupiter.
All that is good for this game, today he plays with poor Sam Burns at 1245 who will be playing in front of the biggest gallery of his career. The 21 year old is here on a sponsors exemption with his mum, dad and girlfriend the only ones paying any attention to his game.
Mac Hughes 67 72 74 +6 and Corey Connors 70 72 74 +6 are well back and
well into their final rounds.
The wind is from the SE again today blowing in and around 20kph diminishing late in the afternoon.
All eyes will be on Tiger to see what score he will post an hour before the leaders come up the 18th..
That is a win win situation, for Woods.. and the game..

England's Eddie Pepperell wins Qatar Masters
European Tour Commercial Bank Qatar Masters final leaderboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2018/tournamentid=2018018/leaderboard/index.html#/leaderboard
I've been keeping an eye on the European Tour's stop in the Middle East this week and overnight, 27 year old English star Eddie Pepperell edged fellow countryman Oliver Fisher to win the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters by a stroke.
With rounds of 65 66 69 70 -18 it is his first European Tour victory in 129 attempts, but it was in doubt right until the 72nd hole where the pair were separated by a just single stroke as they went up the par five.

Both men laid up, but Pepperell in the rough, hit an excellent third to set up a par which Fisher could only match.
He had this to say in the press tent post round.
"I felt good all day, I felt comfortable. I didn't feel that comfortable with my swing but I was in a great place mentally and I kept telling myself that I'm going to win this.
This will give me confidence. When you win, you know you can win. I've always felt and believed I will win out here but it hadn't happened before today. You've always got to take that step and that's uneasy but at some point in everyone's career they've got to do something for the first time. Hopefully this is not my last."
Next week the big boys will be at the WGC Mexico Championship ( used to be the Doral Open on the Blue Monster until Cadillac dropped their sponsorship after Donald Trump bought the resort)
For the rest of the tour who want to make the trip to Pretoria, its the Tshwane Open.

Jessica Korda romps in Thailand..Brooke Henderson T7
LPGA Tour Honda LPGA Thailand final leaderboard http://www.lpga.com/tournaments/honda-lpga-thailand/leaderboard
Well it was her's to win or lose and never missing step Jessica Korda finished one of her best week's as a pro with a commanding 66 62 68 67 -25 four shot win over Thailand's home hope Moriya Jutanugarn 66 69 65 67 -21 and Lexi (Legsy) Thompson 66 68 69 64 -21.
Both women in 2nd played more than well enough to win any other week, but after her Friday round of 62, Korda ranked #26, never gave the field a chance to catch her, smashing the previous mark of -22 set by Amy Yang last year. It is her 5th LPGA win and her first tournament back from jaw surgery in December.
“It’s an incredible thing to be able to win again. I haven’t won in two years. And who knows? It’s so hard out here. These girls are so good. I mean, look at the scoreboard. I had to shoot 25 under just to win,”
Brooke Henderson finished well, with another -5 67, a -16 total which moved her up to T7. Alena Sharp got better as the week went on (75 73 72 71) to finish at +3.

It's all about Tiger today at the Honda Classic, Connors and Hughes make the cut
PGA Tour Honda Classic leaderboard https://www.pgatour.com/yahoo/leaderboard.html
The wind has shifted from the SW to the SE for todays play, its fresher if anything than Friday, sunny and warm, so that means nobody is about to go out this afternoon and shoot 65, as Rory said yesterday, "anything around par 70 is a great score here this week". The greens are getting baked out with the sun and wind and are a very fast test.
So with all due respect to the leaders currently at -3, today will be all about Tiger who has made the cut with 70 71 +1, just 4 behind, and so far today he's played the front nine in -1 so sits at E par.
Looking fit and healthy, this windy tight set up looks like a perfect fit for Tiger, he's hitting that go to low stinger he has perfected over the years off the tee to great effect, and working the ball either way at will with excellent distance control as he heads into his back nine, where the famous Bear Trap awaits. His ball speed is up to 182mph with the Tour average at 168mph, so you can see how freely he is swinging.
Two Canucks made the cut which fell at +5 which tells you how tough conditions are. Mac Hughes 67 75 +2 is on his back nine as I write just a stroke over par, while Corey Connors 70 72 is +3 on his round today with to play.

It's Korda's to lose Thailand, Henderson in the chasing pack
LPGA Tour Honda LPGA Thailand leaderboard http://www.lpga.com/tournaments/honda-lpga-thailand/leaderboard
Heck even her younger sister Nelly took a run at her with a 65 as did the Jutanugarn sisters Moriya and Ariya, but at the end of 3 rounds this Honda LPGA Thailand is Jessica Korda's to win after rounds of 66 62 68 -20 have her 4 shots clear of Moriya and the chasing pack.
It's true that we never appreciate our health until we lose it, and Jessica after a double jaw surgery and a broken nose as part of ensuing complications has suddenly learned that all the problems she thought she had in her life didn't amount to a hill of beans when you are lying unconscious in hospital.
Now much more balanced and aware of what life is all about, she is simply thanking her lucky stars that she is fortunate to play a game she loves and is very good at, and very well paid for and it is showing in her game which has been absolutely stellar all week, jaw dropping you could say...
Australian Minjee Lee (68) is third at -15 201, then Ariya Jutanugarn (65) on 202. Lexi Thompson (69) on 203. Michelle Wie (69) is T6.
Brooke Henderson shot (70) T9 -1. Out in 33 with 3 birgies she stalled with bogeys at 12 and 14 before managing to birdie the last for 37 and the 70. Brooke only hit 8/14 fairways and was up to 30 putts again. Alena Sharp had a (72) +4.
So its Jessica Korda's to win and as I said yesterday, unless she comes back to the field she will do just that !

Mac Hughes a shot off the lead at windy TPC National
PGA Tour Honda Classic leaderboard https://www.pgatour.com/competition/2018/the-honda-classic/leaderboard.html
" Man, this is one of the hardest courses we play all year, including majors," said co-leader Webb Simpson who shares the lead with Alex Noren at -4 66 in steady wind on a penal PGA National golf course, in Palm Beach Gardens.
Mackenzie Hughes had a brilliant round of -3 67 including a bogey from a bunker on #9 on a typical Florida course, all wind and water, and more water and as a result only 20 players broke the par of 70. 76 or worse was not uncommon as Ben Silverman found out at +8 78.
Corey Conners had a very creditable par 70.
Other notables: Playing the course backwards Tiger Woods had only one bad hole, a double bogey 7 on the par-5 third hole for E 70.
Locals, Justin Thomas, Daniel Berger and Morgan Hoffmann and noted wind player Louis Oosthuizen all shot -3 67.
Rory McIlroy went for the par 5 18th in two, missed by a foot, got wet, double bogey 7 led to a +2 72.
With round 2 in more wind gusting at 30km underway, the cut is predicted at +4.

Henderson among the pack chasing Korda at Honda LPGA Thailand
LPGA Tour Honda LPGA Thailand leaderboard http://www.lpga.com/tournaments/honda-lpga-thailand/leaderboard
Brooke Henderson (-4 68) is T5 at -9 with six birdies and two bogeys overnight at the Honda LPGA Thailand's second round which is just what she wanted to do, stay amongst the leaders going into the weekend. Her putts were down to 27 including a 40 foot bomb on #12 for birdie.
The problem is Jessica Korda had one of the rounds of her life, a -10 62 after she fashioned eight birdies capping her sensational round with an eagle to sit at -16 which is a 36-hole record for the event. She leads by 4 shots clear.
Playing in the group with Brooke was Brittany Lincicome, who shot -7 65, -12 at the Siam Country Club Pattaya Old Course, and she is in 2nd place. Alena Sharp (73) is back at +4
Conditions were overcast, hot and muggy with rain threatening most of the day, but ideal for low scoring.
It is notoriously hard to follow a round like 62 with another really low one, so the field will need Miss Korda to come back to them on Saturday or she will have lapped them come dinner time.
The contenders are all stars, Michelle Wie -9, Lexi (Legsy) Thompson -10, Minjee Lee -11 are all in there with Brooke. Saturday's are moving day, so let's see who's moving in the right direction!!

Brooke Henderson back on form in Thailand
LPGA Tour Honda LPGA Thailand leaderboard http://www.lpga.com/tournaments/honda-lpga-thailand/leaderboard
After missing her first cut since 2015 last week, Brooke Henderson took advantage of a rare weekend off to work on her game and came out of the gate this week at the Honda LPGA Thailand with 7 birdies, including a front nine of 32 to post a -5 67, just a shot out of the lead held by one of Thailand's stars, Moirya Jutanugarn -6 66, Americans Lexi Thompson and Jessica Korda and Aussie Minjee Lee.
Only 23 players were over par at the Siam Country Club, including Alena Sharp +3 75.
Brooke had this to say post round. "Yeah, you know, it was a really great start. Felt good, especially coming out of last week. I was happy to get a lot of birdies right out of the gate and feel comfortable again. Unfortunately I gave two back, but I was able to fight pretty hard on the back nine and finish at -5"
She used 29 putts, which is down from the 32 and 33 last week, although still a little high, she did make at least 3 curling 15 -20 footers, and she talked a bit about learning to read Bermuda grass greens.
"Spending a lot time in Florida I’ve been able to learn all about grain and how to read putts like that. Coming from Canada I didn’t really know much about that, but last few years I’ve definitely learned a lot. This heat is pretty similar to Florida. Actually quite a bit hotter.”
Chon Buri in Thailand is 12 hours ahead of EST.
The leaderboard is jam packed so we'll see who stays with the pace when they tee it up for round 2 in a few hours.

Bubba wins again at Riviera...Hadwin's great weekend T6
PGA Tour Genesis Open leaderboard
https://www.pgatour.com/competition/2018/genesis-open/leaderboard.html
Adam Hadwin had a great weekend at the Genesis Open on the fabled Riviera GC. With back to back rounds of 66 he was -10 and climbed up 31 spots on the leaderboard to end up T6 at -8 just 4 shots behind the winner Bubba Watson.
Hadwin (70 74 66 66 -8) only had 1 bogey over the weekend, and if you consider he had 5 bogey's and a triple during his 2nd round 74, he may well have won. This was his 2nd top 10 in his last 4 starts after his T3 at the Career Builders.
Watson hadn't won in 2 years but obviously loves Riviera. His -12 total was good enough for a 2 shot victory and his 3rd on this famous LA course. While he posted a bogey free 33 on his Sunday back nine, it was really his -6 65 on Saturday that won the event for him. He also won in 2014 and 2016.
His short game totals ranked #1, and he was 2nd tee to green. Watson, a well respected, very emotional flake on tour, (these days it's called ADHD, which makes it difficult to focus on one task, they may be pulled in different directions, or not complete the task at hand) hadn't won since Riviera in 2016 and was playing so poorly he'd dropped from #4 to #117. He says he was so bad last year he discussed retirement with his wife on a dozen occasions.
It was his 10th win, including 2 Masters, and he moves to #41 so will now play in the WGC Mexico Championship in a fortnight.
A word about the resurgence of 45 year old Phil Mickelson who had another good week, a final 68 saw him T6. With good performances at Phoenix and Pebble Beach he has 3 straight top 10's for the first time since 2009
Other Canadians: Nick Taylor 71 71 74 68 E, Ben Silverman 72 71 70 73 +2

It is his first win in 17 months and moves him into the top 10 in the Race to Dubai which qualifies him for the WGC Mexico Championship in 2 weeks.Bryan Angus

Holland's Joost Luiten (66), Frenchman Julien Guerrier (66) and England's Matthew Southgate (69) will share a one-shot lead at -12 heading into Sunday's final round of the inaugural NBO Oman Open after a dramatic roller coaster of a day at Al Mouj Golf and it is all set for a shootout on Sunday with 13 players within five shots of the lead.
The Muscat layout on the shores of the Arabian Sea is no stranger to drama having hosted the final event of the Challenge Tour season from 2015-2017.
Oman is an Arab country on the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula in Western Asia. Holding a strategically important position at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, the country shares land borders with the United Arab Emirates to the northwest, Saudi Arabia to the west, and Yemen to the south.

With rounds of 72 76 +6 you have to go all the way down to T116 to find the name Tiger Woods at this Genesis Open, as the PGA Tour's big draw continues his 2018 comeback, sorely in need of competitive rounds to be a factor with today's top pro's.
The leaders are a relatively unknown American, Patrick Cantlay 66 69 -7, surprisingly after several years in golf's wilderness, Graham McDowell 69 66 -7 and Arnie Palmer's grandson Sam Saunders 67, who still has 3 holes to play this morning.
Play was halted last night at this historic Riviera GC due to darkness and will resume at 730 PST.
With the cut projected at +2 there will be 2 Canucks around for the weekend. Nick Taylor 71 71 E and Ben Silverman 72 71 +1

It's a very long trip from Smith's Falls, Ontario to Adelaide, southern Australia, 10,488 to be exact, but Brooke Henderson and her older sister Brittany packed their dolls and dishes and made the flights to the ISPS Handa Women's Australian Open this week, but along with Alena Sharp and Anne Catherine Tanguay it wasn't quite what they all had in mind as they embark on their 2018 season.

Larry Larry Fitzgerald and Kevin Streelman win pro/celebrity title at Pebble Beach
While Ted Potter garnered all the headlines with his life changing win at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro/Am, the other pro's and their amateur partners were chasing their own championship.
In the end it was Arizona Cardinals star wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald playing with Kevin Streelman who walked away with the title.
In fact they won by four strokes, and Fitzgerald as an amateur, received the crystal trophy while Streelman won $10,000.
Fitzgerald plays off a 13 handicap at Whisper Rock GC in Scottsdale and in a twist of fate Streelman is a former Whisper Rock caddie
Fitzgerald is the first pro athlete since Dan Marino in 1988 to win at Pebble Beach and only five others have won including 49ers QB, John Brodie (1970); Jacky Lee (1975); and George Brett (1987).
Streelman who hasn't won in over 3 years and finished T6th, wrapped up their great week like this. “He played great today, and this was special. We’ll remember this for a long time.”

Ted Potter's win at the AT&T Pebble Beach is a life changer
PGA Tour Pebble Beach Pro Am final leaderboard https://www.pgatour.com/competition/2018/at-t-pebble-beach-pro-am/leaderboard.html
This is why these guys strive and work so hard to make it to the PGA Tour.
Ted Potter Jr. has bounced around several mini tours, worked his way up onto the Web.com, then on the PGA Tour won the Greenbrier and seemed on his way until he broke his ankle stepping off a curb in 2014 at the Canadian Open in Montreal and was out for 2 years.
He had two surgeries, one to insert plates and screws, the next one to take them out before heading back to the Web.com and finally qualifying again as a top 25 player.
Sunday at #246 in world rankings following a superb 3 rounds of 68 71 62, he played in the final group in front of all the cameras with Dustin Johnson and after a nervous 3 putt bogey on his first hole, many thought he was about to fold.
In fact he didn't drop a shot after that for a -3 69, and after chipping in for birdie on 7, while DJ made bogey on 8 he had a 3 shot lead at -17 which stood up despite late charges by Phil Mickelson (67) and Jason Day (70). They along with DJ (72) and red hot Chez Reavie (68) finished second at -14.
No surprise he had this to say in his post game presser. "It's been a struggle. You break your ankle and you don’t know what’s going to happen with your swing, with your career. It’s unbelievable right now. This has been a blast this week.”
Now the life changer bit : Apart from the $1.8m and a slew of sponsor invitations to follow, he has a two-year exemption, gets into the Masters, the PGA Championship, can set his own schedule, is full of confidence and when he was greeted by Clint Eastwood before he received his cheque and the trophy, I wouldn't have blamed him if he said..
"Go ahead, make my day !!"

https://www.pgatour.com/competition/2018/at-t-pebble-beach-pro-am/leaderboard.html
Ted Potter Jr. had one of his career rounds, a -9 62 on Monterey Peninsula to catch Dustin Johnson, who shot 70 at Pebble Beach at -14, going into today's final round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am. They lead the field by 2 shots.
He made bogey's on his last two holes, or would have had a shot at the magical "59". The lefty turned professional in 2002 and worked his way through various tours before getting to the PGA. He won the Greenbrier Classic in 2012, missed 2 years recovering from a broken ankle and qualified this year after finishing in the top 25 on the Web.com.
All six Canucks missed the cut which fell at -3. Mike Weir opened with a 77 and fought back hard with 67 69 but his -2 total fell just a shot short.
Nick Taylor was +1, Corey Connors +3, Mac Hughes and Ben Silverman +4 and David Hearn +6.
Watch for Jason Day who won two weeks ago at the Farmers Insurance and is at -12 69 65 69, and Jon Rahm who is in great form at -11 and will go to world #1 if he wins.

In the end Thailand's star player, Kiradech Aphibarnrat won his fourth European Tour title after a 2 and 1 victory over Australian James Nitties in the final.
It was more remarkable because he only entered the event seven days ago and arrived having not played any practice rounds at Karrinyup Country Club.
He needed four trips up the 18th in a play-off on Saturday night to claim the last of the 24 spots in the Super 6 and then had to come through five rounds of match play and 35 holes on Sunday. (remember Perth, Australia is 13 hours ahead of EST)

"I'm working so hard. The last few months I've been getting really close and finally I've done it. It means a lot. When you focus on something, you try this hard, then I kept finishing second and then I'm not giving up. I'm trying so hard until I get it"
For those of you who've asked me about the format it went like this. After 54 holes of stroke play, the top 24 went on to the draw for Sunday's 6 hole match play on the 10th, 11th, 13th, 14th, 12th and 18th, with the 90-yard shootout hole used to separate those still all square.

Saturday's play confirmed the 24 players who made the 54-hole match play cut of -5, with nine players battling it out in a play-off for the last eight places. Now, those players will go head-to-head in the six-hole, knockout format until we have a winner.
The top eight players from stroke play, led by Thailand’s Prom Meesawat -12, received a first round bye for the final day, meaning 16 players will tee it up in the first round starting at 7:30 on Sunday morning.
But it was a day to forget for two players in the final grouping as Lee Westwood and Brett Rumford, two of the pre-tournament favourites, crashed out of the event.
Westwood had been in a share for the lead heading into Saturday, having started with rounds of 66 and 70, but he carded three bogeys and a pair of double bogeys to drop to two-under alongside Rumford, with both players carding six-over rounds of 78

Lee Westwood and Brett Rumford will share the lead heading into the weekend after doing battle on day two of the ISPS Handa World Super 6.
It was Westwood who stole the show in difficult, windy conditions earlier today, posting a 70 to join Perth native Rumford (72) at -8 and the pair will once again be playing together for the final round of stroke play on Saturday.
Remember the top 24, with the top eight seeded after 54 holes will face each other in match play over six holes on Sunday, with five rounds of competition determining who will take home the trophy.

"We both played well," said Westwood. "We haven't given too many shots away, made a few putts and I chipped in a couple of times. It's been fun over the first couple of days. I'm just trying to shoot as low as possible. I know if I carry on playing like I'm playing and a few putts start to go in, because I didn't really hole any putts today, I'll be thereabouts on the leaderboard."
Westwood is the bookmakers favourite, he played well in Malaysia last week including a record 62 on Friday, and hasn't given up on making this year's Ryder Cup team.
Canada's Austin Connelly 69 74 -1 has made the cut, T43.
Denmark's Thorbjørn Olesen fired a 67 to sit at -7 alongside Scotland's Grant Forrest, Thailand's Prom Meesawat and Australian Lucas Herbert.

6 Canadians join elite field of pros and celebs at AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am
PGA Tour AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am leaderboard https://www.pgatour.com/competition/2018/at-t-pebble-beach-pro-am/leaderboard.html
Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth and Jason Day have added their star power to the who's who of the celebrity and corporate world for this weeks marathon over 3 courses that is the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am.
Celebrities include fan favorite Bill Murray, Glenn Frey, Kevin Costner, Steve Young, George Lopez, Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, Kenny G, Justin Timberlake, Ray Romano, Clay Walker, and Carson Daly.
Rory is playing with his father while DJ is accompanied by his father in law, Wayne Gretzky. Spieth is the defending champion at -19 and by 4 shots over Kelly Kraft.
May I add at this point that Pebble Beach on the Monterey Peninsula is obviously one of the world's most spectacular courses on a stunning coastline. However it is sad to me that it is so very expensive to play $450.00US per round plus caddy, never mind play, that only the very wealthy can experience it, never mind live there.
What about opening it up for a month or so in the off season for $25.00 a round and throw in a free lesson for a one time experience for those mere mortals who have no money to spare and who can only watch and dream about teeing it up on the same course that their heroes have.
If you are wondering who owns Pebble Beach, in 1999, The Pebble Beach Company was acquired from Lone Cypress by an investor group led by Clint Eastwood, Arnold Palmer, and Peter Ueberroth for $820m.
There are 6 Canadians teeing it up this week. Mike Weir, Ben Silverman, Corey Connors, Nick Taylor, David Hearn and Mac Hughes. Weirsy in his prime had 2 runner ups, 2005 to Phil Mickelson and 2009 to Dustin Johnson who always plays well here.

Rumford races into the lead at ISPS Handa World Super 6
European Tour ISPS Handa World Super 6 leaderboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2018/tournamentid=2018014/leaderboard/index.html#/leaderboard
While most of you slept the night away on this frigid February night in most of northern America, Brett Rumford opened his account in defense of his title at the ISPS Handa World Super 6 in the warm sunshine of Perth Australia with a sparkling -8 64 for a two shot lead after round 1.
Fellow Aussie James Nitties and a resurgent Lee Westwood had -6 66 T2 on this Lake Karrinyup CC.
Canadian Austin Connelly is T22 -3 69.
Remember last year, Rumford who is from Perth had lost his playing privileges in 2016 but regained them in stunning style leading after all three days of stroke play and then progressing through four rounds of match play to win his sixth European Tour title.

" I just think there's some golf courses just suit your eye and others don't. It's not always the case but generally you find as a trend that a lot of players go back and play well when they've had a lot of good performances there, and this is one of them"
Too give you an idea of what an international field this is, Thai duo Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Prom Meesawat, Frenchman Sébastien Gros, Australians Wade Ormsby, Jason Scrivener and Gareth Paddison, Malaysian Nicholas Fung, Japan's Daisuke Kataoka and South Korean Yikeun Chang were at -5 67.

European Tour goes down under for the ISPS Handa World Super 6
European Tour ISPS Handa World Super 6 scoreboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2018/tournamentid=2018014/leaderboard/index.html#/leaderboard
A feature many find so endearing about the European Tour is the amount of travel (27 different countries) they do. This year they have already played in South Africa, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, Malaysia and this week they are in Perth, Western Australia for the ISPS Handa World Super 6, before flying to Oman then Qatar.
Completely different cultures, food, money, weather, languages. It is one of the things that bonds these competitors together, come Ryder Cup time.
The course, located just a five minute drive from the coast is the Lake Karrinyup Country Club which boasts beauty and history in equal measure. With 75 species of birds on site and kangaroos bounding along the fairways, nature mixes seamlessly with a formidable layout, which is set to pose yet another firm test this week.

Some of the course’s biggest defences are its striking steepness and undulations. Wide fairways allow for some margin of error on one of Australia’s hilliest courses, although sweeping winds coming in from the Indian Ocean must also be factored in to shot choice. They will play 54 holes of stroke play to decide who the top 24 will be. On Sunday those 24 will playoff over 6 holes of match play to decide the winner.
Aussie Brett Rumford resurrected his career here last year and he will do his best to defend his title and it all begins at 5.40pm EST tonight (6.40am local time, Thursday)

Woodland's week at Waste Management Phoenix Open
PGA Tour Waste Management Phoenix Open final leaderboard https://www.pgatour.com/competition/2018/waste-management-phoenix-open/leaderboard.html
Gary and Gabby Woodland's son Jaxson was born prematurely in June after a twin girl was lost in a miscarriage. On Sunday at TPC Scottsdale, he was in his father’s arms at the trophy celebration after a playoff victory over local man,Chez Reavie.
Woodland birdied three of the last four holes for a -7 64, the best round of the day to finish at -18 266. He opened with rounds of 67, 68 and 67 after getting some advice from instructor Butch Harmon.
“Butch sent me a text Thursday morning before I played and said, ‘Forget about everything else, let’s just put four rounds together. Don’t worry about what you shoot, don’t worry about winning, just put four good rounds together"
Reavie who grew up in Phoenix, made a long birdie putt on the 72nd hole to force the playoff, but couldn't make a shorter one for par on the first playoff hole, leaving Woodland to tap in for the win. Reavie was an unknown when he last won in 2008, the RBC Canadian Open at Glen Abbey.
It was only Woodland's 3rd PGA Tour win and his first since 2013 which makes him one of the Tour's underachievers in my opinion. He hits it a mile and a half, has a solid wedge and iron game, putts well and every time he tees it up I think he's bound to be in contention. Harmon's advice underlines his pupils problem... 4 great rounds, not 3.
Jaxson's daddy received $1,242,000 for the win
Rickie Fowler (73) and Jon Rahm (72) slipped to T11 at -12
Adam Hadwin (71) $22,770 was the low Canadian at -4 with Ben Silverman (72) $17,802 next at -3 and Nick Taylor (69) at -2 $16,091

Shubhankar Sharma carded a stunning closing 62 to win his second European Tour title of the season at the Maybank Championship.
The Indian claimed his first victory in just his tenth event at the Joburg Open in December and made it two at Saujana Golf & Country Club as his bogey-free finish got him to -21.

Spaniard Jorge Campillo finished two shots back after firing a 68, a shot clear of Ryan Fox and Pablo Larrazábal.
The win takes Sharma to the top of the Race to Dubai Rankings and he becomes just the third Indian after Jeev Milkha Singh and Anirban Lahiri to win two European Tour events in the same season.

"I played pretty solid and it wasn’t easy because it was windy," he said. "I kept pushing the whole day. I knew I had to make a lot birdies to catch the leaders. I made a lot of birdies on the front nine and just continued on the back."
Next week the tour swings down to western Australia for the ISPS Handa World Super 6 before heading back to the Middle East for events in Oman and Qatar.

Dylan Frittelli continues his fine form at the Maybank Championship
European Tour Maybank Championship leaderboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2018/tournamentid=2018012/leaderboard/index.html#/leaderboard
Round 3 is in the books in sweaty Kuala Lumpur at the Maybank Championship and emerging from the tightly packed leaderboard are in form South African Dylan Frittelli 69 66 66 -15 and Spaniard Jorge Campillo 69 66 66 -15.
Man of the day yesterday, Lee Westwood who fired that -10 62, slipped down the pack with a -2 70 to sit at -12 T11. There are 25 players within 4 shots of the leaders going into Sunday's final round and 13 different players shared the lead during round 3.
However this rising star Frittelli has not looked back since winning his first European Tour title at the Lyoness Open in June, adding this season's AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open to his trophy collection.
It will take a low score to emerge from this truly international pack on Sunday where I see a playoff being required to decide the champion.

Adam Hadwin just 3 behind after 65 at Waste Management Phoenix Open
PGA Tour Waste Management Phoenix Open leaderboard https://www.pgatour.com/competition/2018/waste-management-phoenix-open/leaderboard.html
In front of huge galleries filling the stands and lining the fairways of the TPC Scottsdale Stadium course at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, Adam Hadwin went out on Friday and shot a very classy, -6 65 to move right up the congested leaderboard into a T8, at -7, just 3 shots behind the leaders Rickie Fowler (66) and Bryson DeChambeau (66) who are at -10.
There wasn't a bogey in his round, but 6 birdies on his back nine as he continues the fine form he has displayed this year. Remember he was T3 in the desert at the Career Builders Challenge, and T35 at Torrey Pines.
He finished in style with a par 3 in front of 16,000 in the stands at the 16th, then birdies at 17 and 18 to come home in just 30 shots !
Adam has soared to #54 in the official world rankings, and is 56th on the money list (FedEx Cup)
Other Canadians: Ben Silverman 71 68 -3 T37, Nick Taylor 69 71 -2 T50, Mac Hughes 69 73 E MC.
There are 16 players within 3 shots of the leaders including Phil Mickelson and big Jon Rahm so whoever wins will have to earn it come early Sunday afternoon. Jordan Spieth will not be one of them, he MC at E. The cut fell at -1.

Lee Westwood once again made himself at home in Malaysia as he fired a stunning 62 -10 total on day two of the Maybank Championship. The Englishman is a two-time winner of the Malaysian Open, with his first win in 1997 coming here at Saujana Golf & Country Club.
His second was his latest European Tour win in 2014 but after carding 11 birdies and a single bogey on Friday, the 44 year old is in contention for victory number 24 over the weekend.
"It’s nice to be in contention and to know this golf course well. I won the Malaysian Open here 21 years ago. I was touring pro for this course, so I’ve probably played it more than most and I know where to hit it".
"I hit it close a lot and a pretty pain-free round. Gave myself a lot of birdie chances, so it was a really good ball-striking round and I holed out well as well. I was pleased with the way today went and hopefully we can build on that more"

Congratulations to Gail Graham an outstanding amateur, and solid LPGA pro for 15 years who distinguished herself on the course, and afterwards as an administrator and broadcaster, also to the late A.V. "Mac" Macan, an outstanding architect.
I never knew Mac since he was born in 1882 !, but Gail was and is an integral part of Canada's golfing fabric, and a regular for many years on our Fairways golf show.
They will both be inducted into the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame Tuesday July 24th, 2018 at the RBC Canadian Open.
