Rory McIlroy has shot -6 66 and is T6, while Dustin Johnson rebounded from an opening E72 with a magnificent -8 64 to move up 58 spots, T11 in ideal conditions.
The two headliners trail the big Belgian, Thomas Pieters who is at -12 67, 65 one ahead of Spain's Jorge Campillo (64) after two rounds of this Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. Campillo has been 2nd here three times.
Ryder Cup star Pieters, who finished second in this event in 2016 and fourth a year earlier, made three birdies in an outward 33 after starting on the back nine, and he chipped in from a bunker for a birdie on his last hole for the lead.
Three of Pieters' EurAsia Cup team-mates from last week's European victory over Asia are T3 : France's Alex Levy (65), England's Ross Fisher (67) and defending champion Tommy Fleetwood (68) all -10.
