Ken Duke has just won the Nationwide Tour Championship. He started as a pro 18 years ago under Bob Toski, yes Bob Toski who used to coach Jack Nicklaus, and has been this route several times before.
I am looking at the top 25 finishers all gathered around on the 18th green, some veterans like Duke and some rookies like Jason Kokrak. In his lone start on the PGA TOUR in 2011, he missed the cut at the Transitions Championship after Monday Qualifying.
Think of Aussie James Nitties who was in the final pairing at the Open Championship at Turnberry with Tom Watson in 2009...he finished 26th, beard and all...
There are no Canucks in this story, Q school is their route, and each player in this top 25 has their own story, but for sure the lucky, talented top 25 have millions on their mind..

Sergio wins a thriller at Valderrama
Miguel Angel Jimenez played the shot of the day, a hooking 3 wood from 250 yards over the pond to the severely tilted 17th at Valderrama, he missed the 15 footer for eagle, made the birdie, then left his birdie attempt an inch short on 18 to finish 70, -5
His birdie, birdie par finish meant Sergio needed to par 18 to win. His drive was perfect, his approach found the green side rough. He chipped out to 3 feet, made the knee knocker to win (71 -6) in front of a sun soaked Spanish crowd, to become the first Spaniard to win at Valderrama, back to back wins, what a fortnight for El Nino.
He is striking the ball as well as ever, and has found peace and contentment both with his open handed putting grip, but more importantly with himself.
Sergio is finally growing up. He has a new girlfriend having finally gotten over the dumping he suffered from Greg Norman's daughter Morgan Leigh. I also think that Tiger's demise in the pecking order that exists on tour can only be a confidence booster for Sergio as much if not more so than anyone else.
He has been 2nd here 3 times 2004,05,06 and will now be back in the world's top 20. Miguel Jimenez put on a great show and if he had of matched his iron play with his putter on the front 9, the Andalucian would have won by a few.

Van Pelt dominates the CIMB, McIlroy wins in Shanghai
With scores of 66 64 67 64 261 -23 Bo Van Pelt won the CIMB Asia Pacific Classic Malaysia by 6 shots from a faltering Jeff Overton
I watched a bunch of this early this morning and he was in complete control. He drove it superbly, hit better irons, and was solid on the greens.
In Caesar Milan's words, he of the Dog Whisperer that also runs throughout the night " he was the pack leader"

AP Justin Bergman..In Shanghai, Rory McIlroy defeated Anthony Kim of the United States in a sudden-death playoff Sunday to win the Shanghai Masters.
He gave up an early three-shot lead before rallying from a stroke down on the back nine to finish regulation level with Kim at 18-under 270 and force the playoff. He had a chance to win the championship with an 8-foot birdie putt on the 18th, but missed
Both players drove into the bunker on the first playoff hole, then both made equally well-placed shots out of the sand close to the pin. The American then missed his putt from about 3 feet, while McIlroy sank his 2-footer for the victory.
McIlroy the $2 million first-place prize money, the richest in golf, while Kim took home $750,000. Hunter Mahan (70) and South Korea's Noh Seung-yul (73) finished T3at 13-under.
Lee Westwood had a hole in one on the 12th hole and seven birdies for a 67, finishing in fifth place at 12-under.

Can't sleep ?? plenty of golf to watch..Donald withdraws from WGC-HSBC
With most of the golfing world in the far east there is plenty to follow in the wee small hours for guys like me who are used to getting up at 3.30am, that's right, I have no life !
For example Bo Van Pelt leads a pack of guys who are just ripping up the Mines Resort GC at the CIMB Asia Pacific Classic. With scores of 66,64,67 -16 he leads Jeff Overton 67.62,69 -15 by a shot.

In case you were wondering, the winner will receive $1.3 million from the $6.1 million purse in this event sanctioned by the PGA and Asian tours.
Now if $1.3m to the winner is not enough let's go over to Shanghai in China where Rory McIlroy was tweeting Another good day on the course! Excited to have a chance to get another win this year!” adding the hashtag “itsbeentoolong
He has just shot a 7-under 65 on Saturday to increase his lead to three strokes after the third round of the Shanghai Masters to finish -18, 198.
Folks the 30 players are playing for a $2m first prize, the richest in golf and last place pays $25,000 in this IMG sponsored event !! That doesn't include appearance money either.
Anthony Kim,, continuing his fine play is second after a 65 while South Korean, Noh Seung-yul is - 14 (67).
Then Ian Poulter (67) and Hunter Mahan (68) are -11, Lee Westwood (70) and Geoff Ogilvy (66) are -10 and Robert Karlsson (72), Padraig Harrington (73) and Y.E. Yang (68) are at -6
Now to Sotogrande in Spain, this week's stop on the European Tour, the Andalucia Masters 2011 at Valderrama where Scotland's Richie Ramsay 65,72 -5 leads Gregory Havret 68,71 -3. I think Sergio is the story here though. He is at -2 70,70 in third spot coming off his big win at home last week.

Now back to our side of the pond and the Nationwide Tour on Daniel Island in Charleston for their Tour Championship, and remember the top 25 get their cards for next year.
I haven't paid much attention this veteran all year but Sweden's Daniel Chopra fired a tournament-record, -10 62 to tie for the lead with red hot Jason Kokrak 67,67
Chopra is 37 now, it seems like years ago he burst on the scene on the European Tour but he is 24th on the money list and has won twice on the PGA tour, the last in 2008.

breaking news... europeantour.com Luke Donald has reluctantly withdrawn from next week's WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai to be with his wife for the birth of their second child.
The Englishman, who is trying to become the first player in history to win the money lists on both sides of the Atlantic, had been hoping that his second daughter would arrive this week but the World Number One conceded on Friday that family had to take precedence over the US$7 million event in China and his quest to enter the record books.
Donald said: "It's important for my wife and it's important for me to make sure that I'm around to support her. It's no coincidence that the birth of our first daughter inspired me to some really great golf. Family does put a lot of things into perspective; my job is very important but the family out-trumps everything. I would be there if it wasn't for the baby."

Sadly, no Canucks this year in Nationwide Tour finale
The top 60 on the Nationwide tour money list are in Daniel Island, Charleston this weekend for the Nationwide Tour Championship with the top 25 getting their tour cards for 2012
Sadly we have no Canucks in what was a poor year for our guys. Jon Mills is at 71, Richard T Lee at 124, Bryan DeCorso at 169. He played 16 times and only won $13,244 while others like David Morland and James Love hardly played.

There is an IMG Invitational in Shanghai starting today where many of the big names including the leader Rory McIlroy are warming up for next week's WGC event. It is not sanctioned so the money is unofficial, here is an AP report on the first round.
SHANGHAI -- U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy shot an 8-under 64 on Thursday to take a one-stroke lead in the first edition of the Shanghai Masters, a lucrative invitational tournament that isn’t sanctioned by any of the major tours.
The 22-year-old star from Northern Ireland had eight birdies -- five on the back nine -- in his bogey-free round on Lake Malaren’s Jack Nicklaus-designed Masters course.
The 30 players in the field are vying for the $2 million first prize, the richest in golf.
American Hunter Mahan was second. He had seven birdies, including three in a row on the back nine, then settled for a par in the 18th hole when his birdie try glanced off the lip of the cup.
England’s Paul Casey and Ian Poulter and Ireland’s Padraig Harrington opened with 67s, and American Anthony Kim was another stroke back along with China’s Li Chao.
John Daly was in the group at 69 along with Lee Westwood, Retief Goosen, Y.E. Yang and Robert Karlsson.
Masters champion Charl Schwartzel had a 70, and PGA Championship winner Keegan Bradley had a 72.
Because the International Management Group-run event isn’t sanctioned by a major tour, it doesn’t have world-ranking points, but the big purse drew a stellar field, In addition, the WGC-HSBC Champions is next week right here in Shanghai.
In addition there is an Invitational this week that several top American players including Barnes, Hoffman, Cink and others like Villegas, Singh and Vegas have signed up for, the CIMB Asia Pacific Classic Malaysia at the Mines Resort & Golf Club, Selangor, Malaysia. Round 1 is done there and Robert Allenby leads at -8 63
http://www.pgatour.com/leaderboards/current/r494/ for live leaderboard
Meanwhile McDowell, Kaymer, Bjorn and Garcia are in Valderrama this week, but the majority of the top 60 will not all arrive until the WGC-HSBC in China next week, which is when a certain Mrs Diane Donald is due, so although Luke has committed to the event we may have to count him out for these 2 weeks at least, probably more.. http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/racetodubai/rankings/index.html for full Race to Dubai rankings
Keegan Bradley, McIlroy, Kaymer, Schwartzel, Mickelson, Johnson, Simpson, Scott, Stricker, Clarke, Els etc are all in this $7m dollar field, more Yanks than usual as they work there way down to Australia for the Emirates Aussie Open in Sydney on November 10th where Tiger, Freddie Couples, Dustin Johnson, Webb Simpson, Bubba Watson and other members of the US Presidents Cup squad have been invited to join all the Australian stars including International team captain Greg Norman.
The Presidents Cup is the following week, November 17th in Melbourne.

Simply brilliant...Luke Donald hits the jackpot, wins Player of the Year
That was one of the best, if not the best round of his life.. -8 64 under the gun, with everything on the line.. Luke Donald hit the jackpot yesterday at Disney "where dreams do come true"
Final money list http://www.pgatour.com/r/stats/current/money_projections-1.html#
Let's consider the following in no particular order.
* 6 birdies in a row from 10-15 including the one at his nemesis #14, 10 birdies in 15 holes, to blow the field away, including Webb Simpson who's 69 T6 wasn't all that shabby. He wins by 2 shots.
* he played 7 less PGA Tour events than Simpson
* he has 2 wins here and 14 top10's in 19 starts
* he wins the 2011 PGA of America Player of the Year Award and the Vardon Trophy for the best stroke average and becomes only the second Englishman to win the PGA of America Player of the Year award, following in the footsteps of Nick Faldo in 1990 and also the second English professional to capture the Vardon Trophy since the inaugural winner, ‘Lighthorse’ Harry Cooper, in 1937.
Donald earned 60 total points, based upon 20 points for winning the WGC - Accenture Match Play Championship and his win victory in the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic, along with winning the season’s money title and dominating the season scoring average (68.86). Webb Simpson, who made a late-season surge with a pair of victories, finished runner-up in both the PGA Player of the Year and Vardon Trophy races with 56 points
* he gets a 5 year exemption on the PGA Tour, plus a 7 figure bonus from his clothing sponsor Ralph Lauren
* he now has a shot at history, becoming the first player to win both money titles and POY titles, but with wife Diane, due to give birth in the coming weeks and with seven events remaining and plenty of prize money still on offer, including around an €800,000 first prize at the lucrative WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai, Donald still faces a stiff challenge to hold onto his status as the current European Number One and with it capture the historic money list double-header come December. He leads Rory McIlroy by 1.3m Euros.
* he won with Robert Karlsson's caddie Gareth Lord on the bag..Regular caddie John McLaren was on honeymoon..
* he adds to the incredible run for Europeans in pro golf.
Much has been made of the parity on the PGA Tour with the demise of Tiger, I trust that with this win and all that goes with it, and all that is yet to come, this quiet family man from England will finally get the ink and complete respect in North America that he so richly deserves, as the best player in the world, head and shoulders above the rest, at least for this year.

Vintage Sergio wins easily on his home course
Sergio Garcia, has shot 67 63 64 63 to win his Castello Masters by a whopping 11 shots on his home course and said "that one's for Seve"
Playing completely relaxed and putting like he did when he was the world #2, Garcia who is currrently #49 in the world will likely move into top 35 again with exemptions into the majors and suddenly consideration for next years Ryder Cup squad at Medinah where he had the "leaping" shot from behind the tree.
Sergio I think along with Ernie Els suffered from having Tiger in his prime, and although Ernie is now past his, Sergio at 31 is still in his.

14th hole ruins Donald's chances, Leonard and Chappell lead
As I've been saying all week, this Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic is about much more than the winner, with next years status in limbo for many as we go into Sunday and the money title and Player of the Year still up for grabs.
For the record, Justin Leonard and Kevin Chappell own the lead at 14 under.
The bigger story is the battle between Webb Simpson and Luke Donald. The two men who are vying for the PGA TOUR money title worked their way up the leaderboard during the third round at the Magnolia. Simpson, who ranks No. 1, will start the final round at -10 after his 69 while Donald is one stroke behind -9, after a 70.
However that battle which has favoured Simpson with his $363,029 lead tilted further in his favour at the par 5 14th, where Luke found the water with his drive and eventually 3 putted for a double bogey 7, the three-putt from 34 feet was Donald’s first in a phenomenal streak of 483 holes. The streak began at the eighth hole of the third round of the RBC Canadian Open.
Donald was at -4 on his round when he came to the 14th and Simpson at -1, but Luke's double and Webb's birdie was the 3 shot swing that wiped out all the advantage Luke had gained.
Meanwhile David Hearn is T17 after a -2 70 -8 total
There are several permutations that would allow Donald to overtake Simpson without the victory.
* If Donald wins, Simpson needs to finish solo second to win the Arnold Palmer Trophy.
* If Donald finishes solo second, Simpson needs to finish solo eighth or better to retain No. 1.
* If Donald finishes in a two-way tie for second, Simpson needs a four-way tie for 21st or better to win the money title.
Meanwhile the scuffle for the 125th spot and those around it will not be decided until the final putt today.

Donald needs a big weekend, Simpson remains the strong favourite
After 2 rounds Webb Simpson 68,69 -7 and Luke Donald 66,71 -7 are both tied at 137, five shots behind 3 leaders at -12, Justin Leonard (63) Henrik Stensen (64) and Bio Kim (65)
Good news in a way for Simpson in his pursuit of the money title as he stays close to Donald and remember he leads by $363,029 so the story remains the same, Luke needs to go low this weekend and Webb needs to slip up, a tall order for Donald who is battling a sinus infection.
Play returns to the Magnolia course for the weekend for everybody and David Hearn 71,67 -6 continues to improve on his 102 position on the ML.
Stephen Ames,Matt McQuillan and Chris Baryla all missed the cut which fell at -3
click here for round 3 tee times http://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/r045/tee-times.html
There is a real dog fight going on at the bottom of the ML. . The players at Nos. 123, 124 and 125,D.J. Trahan, Bobby Gates and James Driscoll -- all made the cut.
Every player has a story this week in relation to the money list, for example Justin Leonard who is at 144 and has had a mediocre year thought he was secure for 2012, but a misprint in the media guide said he wasn't. After some research by Tour staff it was confirmed he is good through next year. He gets 10 years for his 1997 Open championship win and as of 2003 the PGA tour started adding 1 year to that for each win and Leonard has 5 wins, thus his 2012 status.

Magnolia course will prove a tougher test for Webb / Donald
Of the 2 Disney courses Magnolia and Palm the former is a much longer tougher test and today that is the course most of yesterday's leaders have to play including Luke Donald and Webb Simpson.
Justin Leonard has just posted a -9 63 on the Palm to set the clubhouse lead at -12. Others are tearing the Palm up for example Kevin Chappell 67, Brandt Jobe 66, Micheal Allen -5 thru 16 and so on.
Most of the scores on the Magnolia are at -1, -2 and -3 so it is important for Donald who is at E thru 4 holes -6 total to get in with something in the 60's to stay in touch for the weekend if he is going to win, especially the way Webb is playing so steadily at -1 today -5 total..
There are good scores to be had on the Magnolia, Bio Kim is at -7 thru 17 today and Jeff Maggert is at -5 thru 8 holes. but in general it is tougher and also Luke and Webb who teed of at 1220pm will have the windier part of the day to play in.
David Hearn is having a good day on the Magnolia -4 thru 15 -5 total.

Chubby Chandler loses Els, now McIlroy..
AP....Uber-manager Chubby Chandler came within a PGA Championship this year of winning the “Chubby Slam,” the media-created single-season sweep of the year’s major championships by members of a single management firm. On Friday Chandler lost his second high-profile client in less than a month.
U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy has left Chandler’s International Sports Management and will join fellow Ulsterman Graeme McDowell at Dublin-based Horizon Sports Management, according to numerous reports.
Ernie Els left Chandler’s stable last month following seven years together to join a new firm led by Vinny Giles and Buddy Marucci.
“Onward and upwards,” Chandler said via ISM’s website. “We have had a quite brilliant year.”
The news surfaced a day after McIlroy competed against fellow ISM clients Darren Clarke and Charl Schwartzel at the PGA Grand Slam of Golf in Bermuda, which was won by PGA champion Keegan Bradley
Chandler reportedly gets 25% of deals he brokers for his clients, so it seems Rory is looking for a little more personal attention for a lot less money..

Donald edges ahead of Simpson after round one..
While round one of the event everyone calls the Disney, perhaps because the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic is too damn long to repeat over and over, especially in this age of tweets and texts, is still in progress, the main story is complete.
Luke Donald, playing beautifully is currently in a 7 way tie for the lead at -6 66 while Webb Simpson, his playing partner is T10 at -4 68. I have done all the math in earlier posts if you need exact details, suffice to say Luke has edged ahead in their race if only slightly, and as you know even if he wins, he needs Webb to slip much further back than 2 shots.Between them they fired 10 birdies, no bogey's all the rest pars...
With storylines everywhere, James Driscoll also T1 -6 66 is 125th on the money list, and all our Canucks are still on course(s).

europeantour.com England's Ross McGowan, fighting for his European Tour future, began the CastellĂł Masters with a seven under par 64 in Spain.
A year after his bid for a Ryder Cup debut was scuppered by a wrist injury, the 29 year old is only 163rd on The Race to Dubai and has dropped from 63rd in the Official World Golf Ranking to 543rd, but, needing things to go his way, he sank his four iron approach to the 503 yard 17th for an eagle two and also had five birdies in a flawless display.
McGowan is two in front of compatriot Richard McEvoy and Paraguay's Fabrizio Zanotti, and three clear of a group which includes Sergio Garcia on his home course and Northern Irishman Michael Hoey on his first appearance since winning the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship title.

Field announced for the Nedbank Challenge in Sun City
Once billed as the "world's richest first prize" at $1m, the Nedbank World Challenge has just announced it's field for December and Luke Donald has joined Lee Westwood to beef up what used to be a really star studded invitational twelve. 1st prize is now $1.25m with last place getting a lowly $250,000. They have been playing at the Gary Player CC since 1981.
Seve, Monty, Nick Price, Ernie Els, Johnny Miller have all won here in their prime, and it is a sign of the times I guess that there is so much golf and so much money that the top American is Jason Dufner.
click here for a list of past champions http://www.nedbankgolfchallenge.com/content.aspx?id=15003&cat=NGCHistory
The Seniors now play a 54 hole event in front of the actual tourney for a $250,000 1st prize and here is a report on their field
The winner of last year's Nedbank Senior Challenge, Jeff Sluman, will be defending his title against Gary Player Country Club specialists Nick Price and David Frost, both of whom have won three NGC titles, as well as the player now considered to be the best senior golfer in the world, Bernhard Langer. Langer is also no stranger to the Gary Player-designed layout, and has won here twice. Making up the star studded field will be former Open champion Mark Calcavecchia (who finished as runner-up to Langer in the 1991 NGC), another past Open champion Tom Lehman, and two-time major winner Mark O’Meara. Completing the octet of over-50 stars will be Ian Woosnam
Now for the AP report on this year's field.
JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Top-ranked Luke Donald and No. 2 Lee Westwood head the field for the Nedbank Golf Challenge in Sun City, South Africa.
Organizers announced Thursday the two top-ranked English golfers would play the Dec. 1-4 event, which also features four major winners in its 12-man field.
Also in the field are No. 6-ranked Martin Kaymer — the 2010 PGA Championship winner — Masters champion Charl Schwartzel, 2010 U.S. Open winner Graeme McDowell and British Open champion Darren Clarke.
Jason Dufner is the only American in an event.
South Korea's No. 21-ranked Kim Kyung-tae will make his Sun City debut, while Europeans Anders Hansen, Simon Dyson, Thomas Bjorn and Robert Karlsson also are entered.

2012 PGA Tour schedule
Armed with a brand new TV deal Tim Finchem and his staff have announced the schedule for next year including some new sponsors, new dates, new courses but the same fabulous purses !!
Of note the RBC Canadian Open goes back to Hamilton G&CC., the majors are Masters, US Open at Olympic Club in San Francisco, the Open Championship is at Royal Lytham and St Anne's and the PGA is at Kiawah Island then the Ryder Cup is at Medinah GC outside of Chicago.
Here is the official release.
The PGA TOUR has released its 2012 schedule, which features 45 official money tournaments, the same number and configuration as 2011 with 37 during the Regular Season, four PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup tournaments and the four-tournament Fall Series.
There are some notable changes, however, including new dates or host sites for tournaments, plus an off week that shifts one week later during the Playoffs to precede the finale, the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola.
Additionally, two new title sponsors are represented on the schedule with the Humana Challenge in partnership with the Clinton Foundation in La Quinta, Calif., and the RBC Heritage at Hilton Head Island, S.C.
The first change from 2011 occurs with the season-opening Hyundai Tournament of Champions at Kapalua, Hawaii, concluding on Monday, Jan. 9, rather than Sunday. This, in part, will allow tournament promotion by NBC and Golf Channel during the NFL Playoff weekend and Golf Channel to televise the final round prior to the start of the BCS National Championship football game.
As previously announced, another prominent early-season change occurs with the Humana Challenge, scheduled for Jan. 16-22. The former Bob Hope Classic is revamping its pro-am format from five rounds to four and from pro-am teams to a single amateur being paired with a professional each round. Additionally, Humana, the Clinton Foundation and the PGA TOUR are using tournament week to promote individual health and well-being, including a first-ever national conference on Tuesday highlighted by a keynote address from former President William J. Clinton.
In addition to getting a new title sponsor, the RBC Heritage returns to its traditional week in April immediately following the Masters Tournament, with the Valero Texas Open moving back a week to follow the RBC Heritage, which is scheduled for April 9-15.
Other date changes include:
• Two Texas tournaments -- the HP Byron Nelson Championship, May 14-20, and Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, May 21-27 -- switching weeks with one another immediately following THE PLAYERS Championship;
• The Greenbrier Classic moving from the end of July to July 2-8, allowing the resort's Independence Day activities to be showcased around the tournament
• The Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic, the last event of the Fall Series, moving from October to the week of Nov. 5-11.
Four tournaments will be held at different courses than were used in 2011, including two Playoff tournaments -- The Barclays opens the Playoffs Aug. 20-26 at Bethpage State Park-Black Course on Long Island, N.Y., and the third Playoff event, the BMW Championship, will be held for the first time at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Indianapolis, Ind., Sept. 3-9.
The other two changes are the AT&T National returning to Congressional Country Club in Washington, D.C., the week of June 25-July 1 following a two-year absence, and the RBC Canadian Open moving east to Hamilton Golf & Country Club in Ontario, July 23-29.
The structure of the schedule remains the same, with the PGA TOUR following its traditional two-week opening in Hawaii with a six-week West Coast swing, concluding with the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship in Arizona, Feb. 20-26. The Mayakoba Golf Classic in Mexico will be held the same week.
The TOUR then moves through the Southeast, Puerto Rico and Texas over the next 13 weeks, beginning with four straight weeks in Florida and ending in Texas with the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial. The year's first major championship, the Masters, is scheduled for April 2-8. THE PLAYERS will be held May 7-13.
The next 10 weeks are spent primarily in the Midwest and Northeast, beginning May 28-June 3 at the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide Insurance in Dublin, Ohio, and ending with the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio, July 30-Aug. 5. The exceptions are the U.S. Open at Olympic Club in San Francisco, June 11-17; The Open Championship at Royal Lytham & St. Anne's Golf Club in England and the renamed True South Classic in Madison, Miss., July 16-22; and the Reno-Tahoe Open, held the same week as the Bridgestone Invitational.
Following the PGA Championship on Aug. 6-12 at Kiawah Island Golf Resort, S.C., the Wyndham Championship, set for August 13-19 in Greensboro, N.C., provides players with the final shot at finishing among the top 125 in FedExCup points and qualifying for the Playoffs, which begin the following week at The Barclays.
After The Barclays, the next Playoffs event is the Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Boston with its traditional Labor Day Monday finish. Then the Playoffs move to the BMW Championship before taking a one-week break prior to the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola in Atlanta, scheduled for Sept. 17-23. The Ryder Cup immediately follows the Playoffs at Medinah Country Club, Ill..
The Fall Series, which finalizes the 125 exempt players for the following year based on final money standings, begins Oct. 1-7 with the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open and is followed by the Frys.com Open, Oct. 8-14, and The McGladrey Classic, Oct. 15-21.
Play then shifts to Asia with the CIMB Asia Pacific Classic in Malaysia and World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions in China before returning for the Fall Series conclusion at the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic on Nov. 5-11.

Lot's at stake starting today.. Money lists, scenario's..
It's the last PGA tour event of the season with a lot at stake including the money title and Player of the Year between Luke Donald and the favourite, Webb Simpson.
To recap Webb who has played 7 more events on this tour than Luke who chooses to play both tours, is $363,000 (give or take a few bucks) ahead with $846,000 available as 1st prize.
This is the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic played on 2 courses at the Disney resort in Orlando, the Palm and the Magnolia. Players are paired in two's with an amateur partner. Donald and Simpson are paired together for the first 2 days and are off at 8.20 this morning on the Palm.
Here are the scenarios that need to happen for Donald to have a chance to overtake Simpson:
If Donald wins: Should Donald win at Disney, he will claim the first-place check of $846,000. If that happens, Simpson would need to finish solo second (worth $507,600) to stay atop the money list.
If Donald finishes solo second: Should Donald win the $507,600 that goes with a solo second, Simpson would need to finish solo eighth or better to stay atop the money list. Solo eighth is worth $145,700.
If Donald finishes tied for second: A two-way tie for second is worth the aforementioned $413,600. If Donald accomplishes that, Simpson would need to finish in at least a four-way tie for 21st (worth $50,760) to stay atop the the money list. A three-way tie for second (worth $350,933.33) will not be good enough for Donald.
4 Canucks are in the field Chris Baryla who needs a win to get into the top 125, Matt McQuillan who is at 132, David Hearn who is in for next year at 102, Stephen Ames is at 136 but is good for next year on his 2006 Players Championship win and 2 others. Mike Weir and Graham Delaet will start next year playing on medical exemptions.

Keegan Bradley wins PGA Grand Slam
I never pay much attention to this made for TV 36 hole unofficial event, crammed in to busy schedules usually on a Monday and Tuesday down in Bermuda, however as your faithful reporter I submit this report from pgatour.com's Josh Ball who was lucky enough to get the gig..
SOUTHAMPTON, Bermuda -- Keegan Bradley watched Charl Schwartzel rattle off four birdies to win the Masters on television. He got to see what the South African can do first-hand at the PGA Grand Slam Wednesday.
Bradley grabbed a narrow one-shot victory at Port Royal Golf Course, holing a nervy 5-footer on the 18th hole to complete a level-par 71, which left him 4 under for the tournament. The PGA Champion's round was enough to enable him to hold off a determined charge from Schwartzel, who shot a course record-tying 6-under 65 to finish one shot back at 3 under.
Rory McIlroy's challenge ended with wild shots at Nos. 7 and 15, and though he chipped in to save par at 15 he was 1 under at that point and chasing the leaders in a round when, once again, he couldn't get a putt to drop. He ended up at level par
Darren Clarke was never in the hunt following his opening-round 77, but at 1 under through nine holes he at least looked like earning some respectability on the second day. That ended with four bogeys on the back side, and consecutive bogeys at 14 and 15 dropped him to 3 over for the round and 9 over for the tournament.

$363,029
If you weren't watching Webb Simpson missed a 3 footer for par to extend their playoff to a 3rd hole, gifting the McGladrey Classic to Ben Crane late yesterday afternoon.
So as I wrote previously, the $432,000 Webb gets for 2nd leaves him $363,029 up on Luke Donald going into this week at Disney where 1st prize is $846,000.
At the very least, Donald would have to finish no worse than a two-way for second to have any chance to move past Simpson and resume his bid to become the first player to win money titles on the PGA TOUR and European Tour. Luke already has a 1.3 million euro lead in Europe.

Young sensation Tom Lewis wins Portugal Masters
You will remember big Dar' Darren Clarke winning this year's Open Championship, you might remember what a solid week Thomas Bjorn had, and the charge that Phil Mickelson made on the front 9 on Sunday, but do you remember who was tied for the lead with Bjorn after that 1st round.
Hint, he played with his idol and the man he was named after,Tom Watson.... That's right, young amateur sensation Tom Lewis who stole the hearts of many with his play that week, receiving the silver medal as the top amateur..
Well in this his 3rd start as a pro he has just won the Portugal Masters by 2 shots with scores of 70,64.68,65 -21
He is from Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, England.
In 2009, Lewis won the Boys Amateur Championship at Royal St George's and he turned pro after his team won the Walker Cup in September this year.

Couples lapping the field at AT&T
Beating Freddie when he is playing well is tough enough, spotting him 7 shots means everyone else can relax and play for second.
pgatour.com..Couples set a new 36-hole tournament scoring mark and tied the event's 18-hole scoring record with a 10-under-par 62 to open up a commanding 7 shot advantage with one round to play. The only misstep for Couples came on the fourth hole. After starting with three successive birdies, he doubled No. 4, hitting his 7-iron to the right and then his second into the bunker resulting in the double, but from that point on, he made nine birdies over the final 14 holes. His 36-hole total of -17 127 is the lowest in tournament history, breaking Mark McNulty's total of 14-under-par 130 in 2004.
Jim Rutledge 73,72 and Rod Spittle 74,71 are well down the field.

Simpson must be favourite to win PGA Tour money title and Player of the Year
This really may be obvious, but with Webb Simpson sitting just 2 shots off the lead as play gets under way at the McGladry Classic, he must be considered the odds on favourite to win the Money title and with it the Player of the Year on the PGA Tour.
Unless he collapses completely today, and that will not happen, he has two shots at that title and Luke just one.
The math tells the story. First prize is $720,000 this week, $846,000 next week at Disney. Donald leads Simpson by nearly $70,000.
Simpson has won 2 of his last 5 starts. In a best case scenario for him, he wins this week and will be $650,000 or so, up on Luke, meaning Luke will have to win next week and hope that Webb doesn't make enough to cover.
Second place will collect winnings of $432,000 (assuming second place isn’t tied) and yes it gets a wee bit complicated, but suffice to say, Simpson can really put the boots to Donald's hopes of winning all the marbles on both sides of the Atlantic with a solid afternoon today.
It's in his hands, and the way he has been playing that makes him the favourite.
Furthermore, while I have Luke as the winner of Player of the Year here with his 13 top 10's, his win at the Accenture Match Play, his domination of the scoring stats and I must say his willingness to travel and play at the highest standard as the world's #1 around the world while Webb sits at home in the States, there are more than enough American pundits who are not as convinced as I am, and a win here this week would give them the ammo they need to give the nod to Simpson.
Simpson is the favourite but it does make for bonus coverage today and next week doen't it.

Rolex Rankings No. 4 Na Yeon Choi captured her first victory of the 2011 season at the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia. Choi shot a final-round 68, -15 and held off a Sunday charge from Rolex Rankings No. 1 Yani Tseng (65) to capture her fifth career LPGA Tour victory.
It was her birdie 2 on 17, as both players were tied at -14 that made the difference when Tseng had missed a birdie attempt of her own.
It was her 10th top 10 of the year and the 100th win by a South Korean on the LPGA tour.

Lowery, badly in need of a shave and a haircut, settled for a birdie at the 190-yard 13th after his 6-iron lipped out, then holed out from the fairway from 168 yards with an 8-iron for an eagle on the next hole.

Luke Donald forced to enter Disney
"There was never really a decision to be made," Donald tweeted today from London. "I have a chance of making history. See you all at Disney next week."
He added the hashtag, #bringiton.
So with that that next week's final stop in the Fall Series takes on a whole new focus as the money title and the 5 year exemption that goes with the Arnold Palmer trophy will likely be decided. Donald who leads the Race to Dubai by 1.3m euros only has a $70,000 dollar lead on the PGA Tour money list and with Webb Simpson in this week's field and opening with a 63, Luke's hand was forced if he is going to become the first player to win both.
He wrote in his notebook that he was hoping not to add another PGA event to an already crowded schedule, he had played eight of the previous 10 weeks before taking this week off.
He flew to London on Thursday night to attend the weekend wedding of his caddie, John McLaren, and will return to Chicago afterward where his wife, Diane, is due to deliver the couple’s second child in mid November.
What a month ahead for the world's #1 !!

Spittle set to defend in San Antonio
Today Rod Spittle will set out to defend his title at the AT&T Championship in San Antonio, his first win on the Champions Tour, and the one that has changed his life.
By now you know his story, a native of Niagara Falls, a standout college golfer at Ohio State who decided to take a job selling life insurance while he raised his family before taking the plunge after a stellar amateur career to try his luck on the Champions tour in 2004.
He Monday qualified and got some sponsor exemptions before his big break in 2007 when he finished tied for second at the Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn to win $128,000 and get into the top 50 on the money list for the first time.
But his win in at this event last year gave Rod full exempt status this season and enabled him to plan ahead and the results are obvious.
He has 4 top 10s, a second and a third in 22 events. He has won $691,184 and is No. 19 on the money list, which gets him into the limited 30-man field for the Champions Tour finale at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship at TPC Harding Park, San Francisco, in two weeks.
I caught up with him by email and asked him about the change of venue from Oak Hill last year to TPC San Antonio this year.
"The TPC course will prove to be a very fair test, it is in terrific condition and I expect it to be very well received by all of the players.Being a new course, the fairways are a little more generous than Oak Hills and if the wind blows, the course will become very tricky.I am excited to be part of the new venue for the ATT event."
Last year he rallied with a final-round 67, featuring three straight birdies on Nos. 15-17, and won a playoff against Jeff Sluman. I asked him if there was any part of his game he was working on a bit more in preparation for the new course.
"I am always working on my game and working to improve. Particularly here this week, I have spent a little more time chipping and putting. The greens are firm and fast. And as always, the best putter for the week will be the winner on Sunday."
Spittle is just about to tee off, and Jim Rutledge is also in the field.

Ideal scoring conditions at Portugal Masters
Halfway through the 1st round the field is scorching the Oceanico Victoria GC, with South Africa's James Kingston the best of the bunch at -8 64 to lead by one from in-form Dane Thomas Björn, Northern Ireland’s Gareth Maybin and Austrian Bernd Wiesberger.
Light wind, clear blue skies and generous pin placements are leaving the course defenceless, Kingston for example had 7 birdies in 8 holes.

World Cup of Golf latest
Ireland must be considered the favourities with the announcement of the teams for the 2011 World Cup today
Mission Hills World Cup Italy’s defending champions, Edoardo and Francesco Molinari, will face some stiff competition not only to retain the OMEGA Mission Hills World Cup but also for the honour of being golf’s leading brothers, with Columbia and Portugal both represented by siblings in China. Camilo and Manuel Villegas will form the Colombian challenge for the prestigious title at Mission Hills Resort, Hainan Island, China, from November 24-27, while Ricardo and Hugo Santos will be hoping to capture a first World Cup for Portugal.
The three sets of brothers are among 28 teams of two players representing their countries, with five Major Champions – including current Masters Tournament winner Charl Schwartzel of South Africa and US Open Champion Rory McIlroy of Ireland – also in the field.
They will all be trying to succeed the Molinari brothers who became the first brother combination to win the OMEGA Mission Hills World Cup in 2009 when they finished one stroke clear of Ireland’s Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy and Sweden, represented by Robert Karlsson and Henrik Stenson.
Camilo Villegas will be making his second appearance at the World Cup, having finished T14 with Manuel Merizalde in 2006. His brother Manuel will be playing the event for the first time, as the pair attempt to follow in the footsteps of the Molinaris. “I’m especially looking forward to playing in the OMEGA Mission Hills World Cup this year, because not only is it an honour to be able to represent Colombia on the golf course, but it will be a thrill to be able to do it as a team with my brother, Manny,” said Camilo. “We both want to go to China in November to make our country, and our family, proud.”
Similarly Ricardo Santos, who is currently third on the European Challenge Tour Rankings, has made one World Cup appearance in 2008, finishing tied for 13th with partner Tiago Cruz.
The Molinari brothers’ victory in 2009 was part of a wonderful two years for the duo, with Edoardo capping a stunning season that saw him finish top of the Challenge Tour Rankings with three wins and record earnings. For both players the OMEGA Mission Hills World Cup win proved to be the catalyst for even greater achievements in 2010. Between them they won three European Tour titles – Francesco at the WGC-HSBC Champions and Edoardo at the Barclays Scottish Open and the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles - and in October they helped Europe to Ryder Cup glory over the United States.

Hoey named Golfer of the Month for September
Word this morning yet another golfer from Northern Ireland has been honoured. Here is the release from Steve Todd of the European Tour.
Hoey named Golfer of the Month for September
Northern Ireland’s Michael Hoey has capped a magnificent month by being named The 2011 Race to Dubai European Tour Golfer of the Month for September, the first time he has won the award.
Hoey held his nerve under intense pressure at the US$5million Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland to capture his second European Tour title of the season – and the third of his career – at the expense of his illustrious compatriots Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell, who finished second and tied third respectively.
Hoey trailed McIlroy after the US Open Champion birdied the 11th hole at St Andrews, but hit back in devastating fashion with three birdies in his final four holes to take the title by two shots.
The €588,148 winner’s cheque moved Hoey to 15th place in The Race to Dubai, and having now guaranteed his place in the season-ending Dubai World Championship presented by DP World, he is in line to claim a share of the US$7.5million Bonus Pool at the end of the season.
Hoey said: “To be named The European Tour Golfer of the Month for September is a true honour for me. My victory at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship was the biggest week of my career, and for this to be acknowledged by The European Tour amongst so many other worthy candidates is a real privilege. “This is the first time I have received a Golfer of the Month award, and hopefully my performance in Scotland can spur me on to greater things and more of these awards in the future.”
Derek Lawrenson, golf correspondent for the Daily Mail and a member of the judging panel which comprised representatives of the Association of Golf Writers in addition to commentators from radio and television, said: “As ever these days, this was an amazingly difficult decision. Thomas Björn’s second victory in succession was a marvellous feat, as was Simon Dyson’s second tournament win in as many months. “However, Michael Hoey’s victory in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship wins this month’s award for the manner in which he overcame years of adversity to claim his prize; the fact that he did it against a world-class field, holding off no less than five Major Champions down the stretch; and for the golf he played down the stretch, which was startlingly good.”
Björn was given serious consideration after following up his win at the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles at the end of August with victory at the Omega European Masters at the beginning of September.
Similarly, Dyson’s victory at the KLM Open, combined with the role he played in Great Britain and Ireland retaining the Vivendi Seve Trophy, made the Englishman a genuine contender for the award, along with his compatriot Kenneth Ferrie, who won the Austrian GolfOpen presented by Lyoness.
Hoey joins an illustrious list of Race to Dubai Golfer of the Month winners in 2011, following Martin Kaymer (January), Luke Donald (February and May), Paul Lawrie (March), Charl Schwartzel (April), Rory McIlroy (June), Darren Clarke (July) and Thomas Björn (August).
Hoey will now, with his fellow award winners, be considered for The 2011 Race to Dubai European Tour Golfer of the Year Award, which was won jointly by Martin Kaymer and Graeme McDowell in 2010.

Rory McIlroy slipped ten shots behind leader Rickie Fowler as he only managed a third round 73 at the Kolon Korea Open.
The young Ryder Cup stars from opposite sides of the Atlantic both held a share of the overnight lead, but while US Open Champion McIlroy had four bogeys, four birdies and a double bogey 73, American Fowler carded eight unanswered birdies in a 63.

McIlroy produced a fourth round rally after playing his final 11 holes in seven-under-par to card a superb 64, but the 22-year-old was left to rue a third round 73 as the world number three was forced to settle for a second consecutive runner-up finish

update..Bryce Molder became another first time winner when he beat Briny Baird on the 6th playoff hole. Molder captured his first tour victory by making a 6-foot birdie putt
Molder and Baird were stuck in time, going from the 17th hole to the 18th hole in three cycles, matching birdies and pars, both players feeling at various points that they were going to win.
Three times, Molder hit driver on the 284-yard 17th hole over the water and had eagle putts for the win, each one a little closer to the hole than the previous one, all of them sliding by the side of the cup.
On the fourth extra hole, Baird felt like a winner when Molder drove into the hazard. Molder was able to get to the front of the green from the junk, while Baird's wedge hit the top of the flag and spun back some 12 feet. He missed.
After nearly two hours, Baird blinked and Molder finally made a putt to win
If there was a consolation for Baird, he earned $540,000 and now is assured of getting his card back for next year.
Bud Cauley, the 21-year-old who turned pro this summer, shot 66 and finished third to earn $340,000, which looks as if it will be enough for him to earn a card next year without having to go through the qualifying tournament.
Tiger Woods had three rounds in the 60s for the first time in more than a year and he finished 10 shots behind in a tie for 30th.
Shane Bertsch surged into the lead alone with an eagle at No. 15 to reach 15 under, only to miss a short putt on the next hole. He failed to make another birdie and tied for fourth with a 64. Ernie Els also tied for fourth. He went bunker-to-bunker on the 15th and had to settle for par and closed with a 68

update..
Lee Slattery survived a shaky start and a nerve-shredding final hole to capture his first European Tour title at the Bankia Madrid Masters.
Two clear at the start of the final round, the 33 year old Englishman bogeyed two of his first five holes at El Encin Golf Hotel. That allowed Argentine veteran Cesar Monasterio and Italian Lorenzo Gagli to seize the initiative, before Slattery regained control with four birdies in five holes from the 11th.
Three clear with three to play, Slattery looked in complete control as he parred the 16th and 17th – but there was still plenty of drama to come.
He hit his second on the par five last into a bunker, and then pushed his approach into the water to the right of the green. At that stage The Challenge Tour graduate was rekindling memories of Jean Van De Velde’s infamous closing hole in The 1999 Open Championship at Carnoustie.
But a decent chip left him with two putts from ten feet, and he holed a two footer to secure a one shot win over Gagli.Despite his seven at the last, Slattery’s 71 gave him a 15 under par total in the Spanish capital.
“I’ve never shaken so much in my life,” said Slattery. “I’ve been out here for seven years and now I believe I can win. That’s been the biggest problem over the last few years.”
The victory will be all the sweeter for a player who lost his card by just €77 in 2007 and had to return to The Challenge Tour last year after again slipping out of the top 115 in 2009

The last time Ernie Els won a tournament on the PGA TOUR was last year -- he actually won two of them. The last time Briny Baird won one was, well, never.
Not that Baird hasn't had his chances -- 347 of them to be exact.
Baird has won over $11m.. without winning, shot 64 -13 to begin Sunday 2 shots clear of Ernie 68 -11 and Paul Casey 67 -11..
Meanwhile Adam Hadwin had a sensational 64 of his own and is T4 at -10, just 3 shots back

update..Bryce Molder became another first time winner when he beat Briny Baird on the 6th playoff hole.

Bankia Madrid Masters

Tiger of course is getting all the pub playing in his first Fall Series event, but apart from him and our 4 guys there are all kinds of veterans in this field trying to save their seasons.
For example Ernie Els has never played in one either . He hasn't been in the T10 in this his worst season on the PGA tour, he only has five T25's
Trevor Immelman is another, he hasn't been in the T10 since 2008. He did have wrist surgery but has been 100% for a long time.
Angel Cabrera, remember him ?? He hasn't been in the States since the Wyndham Championship, he has MC in his last 4 outings, and in 9/15 and is at 133 on the money list.
Rocco Mediate has been hurt all year but is back to defend his title.. and talk to Tiger ! Other veterans like Steve Elkington, Jeff Maggert, Ben Curtis, Justin Leonard, Paul Goydos, Todd Hamilton etc etc are all here for their own reasons, and if you click on the money list below. you will see most of them ..

Fry's.Com has become "theTiger return"
Tiger's return to the PGA Tour in the Fall Series has given Fry's.com a huge boost to say the least. He needs to play before heading to Australia so this is his spot considering he is negotiating a deal with Fry's
SAN MARTIN, Calif. (AP) -- Tiger Woods announced a deal Wednesday with Rolex to be one of its ambassadors.Woods previously had a watch deal with Tag Heuer, which ended two months ago.Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Woods earlier this year announced a deal in Japan to endorse a heat rub product for Kowa Company Ltd., although that was geared exclusively for Japanese markets.
The Rolex deal was announced the day Woods returned to the PGA TOUR at the Frys.com Open. His agent at Excel Sports Management, Mark Steinberg, promised more deals to come."This makes a big statement," Steinberg said at CordeValle, where he was watching Woods tee off in the pro-am. "I think this shows me where people are with Tiger Woods."
Steinberg said Rolex would be the first of a "couple of announcements" related to endorsements, including a deal for Woods' golf bag. He has had his foundation logo on the bag since his deal with AT&T ended. He said a bag deal was likely to be announced as early as six weeks. Woods has been in negotiations with Fry's Electronics, sponsor of this week's tournament, although those discussions have been going on for most of the year.
He missed most of this summer recovering from injuries to his left leg. Woods is playing four more times this year, starting with the Frys.com Open, followed by the Australian Open, Presidents Cup and the Chevron World Challenge.
Typical of his previous endorsements, Steinberg said the Rolex logo would not be visible as Woods plays golf. He had a watch in his bag during the pro-am, Steinberg said. Woods doesn't wear a watch when he plays golf

Hearn's T5 should secure his card for next year..
I was talking in my preview to this past weekend's golf about how important this Fall Series is to a lot of guys, including our Canucks..
David Hearn's outstanding week in Vegas earned him nearly $150,000, just what the doctor ordered to move him from 129th up to 108th which should secure his card for next year and take the pressure off.
Stephen's 5 year exemption for winning the 2006 Players expired this year, he may have something like an all time money list to fall back on, but basically he needs to win enough to get into the top 125. He is at $528,122 after his T23 last week and #125 Tim Clarke is at $571,00
Matt McQuillan missed the cut to drop 1 spot to 140, Chris Baryla needs to win to keep his card, Graham DeLaet will get a partial medical exemption and Mike Weir will get a medical exemption as well following his wrist operation.
108 129 David Hearn 23 $678,548
131 133 Stephen Ames 19 $528,122
140 139 Matt McQuillan 18 $423,620

Hoey hangs on to win at St Andrews
I must admit St Andrews is very dear to me, I have asked that my ashes are scattered on the 18th green, on a rainy night so I don't get blown into the north sea, and we have scattered my brothers ashes just off the fairway at the road hole where his drive always seemed to end up. You have to be there, smell it, feel it, walk where all the greats except Ben Hogan have walked, where the history of golf was made, for your golfing career to be complete.
I have said a million times as I stand over a putt, "this to win the Open at St Andrews"
Well it wasn't the Open but Michael Hoey after a nice drive on 18, hit a beauty of a pitch and run up through the valley of sin was 4 feet away with 2 putts to win the Dunhill Links, he only needed one for what will be a career altering win, his 3rd, and another for the incredible run Northern Ireland is on, in fact Rory finished 2nd and GMac T3 !!
I thought Rory was going to run away with it when he went out in 30 shots, but after a birdie at 11, he missed a bunch of putts to par in for 65.

Dunhill Links Championship
Northern Ireland has a lesser known son atop the leaderboard as play in round 4 is under way in the rain at St Andrews. Micheal Hoey 66, is a 31 year old journeyman with a couple of pro wins after a glittering amateur career, and he is 3 shots clear at -18 of countryman Graeme McDowell 67, -15, and 5 clear of another, Rory McIlroy 63, at -13
Luke Donald 63 is also at -13 and Lee Westwood 68, is at -11. Also watch for Simon Dyson 63 -13 who is as hot a golfer as there is right now.
Expect scoring to be low again today because there is no wind to protect the old course and the rain takes all the fire out of the greens and fairways. Hoey will need all 3 shots to hold off the star studded cast chasing him.
