Canada's National Women's Golf Championship August 20-24 is at the Mississauga G&CC in Toronto this year. The event began in 2001, American Lauren Coughlin is the defending champion.
There are 16 Canadians entered, 12 of them on the Sponsor's invitation, mostly young amateur's, along with veterans Alena Sharp and Maude Aimee LeBlanc
They are led of course, by Brooke Henderson, now 27 who is a past winner, playing in her 12th Canadian.
This is not the Brooke of old when she was a locked in top 10. In her pre tourney interviews she has admitted this year more than any that " golf is hard" when you are in a slump.
With just one top10 this season, she has fallen to a owgr #58, and now #53 in the Race to CME Globe where the top 60 qualify for the Tour Championship.
She remains buoyant about returning home to an event she has played well in, with the large galleries cheering her on, an opening 65 last week in Portland gave her a boost, but right now she is just striving to put 4 good rounds together.
Much was made at the recent British Women's Championship at Royal Porthcawl, won by diminutive 4'10" Japanese Miyu Yamashita, of the Asian domination of the women's game.
Since 2000 when the great Korean, Se Ri Pak broke through, 25 of the 55 majors played have been won by Asian women from countries like South Korea, China, Taiwan, Laos, Thailand, just to name a few.
Of the top 20 entries this week 14 are of Asian origin, such is their depth, all of which Brooke at 27, now has to compete with.
