Thirston Lawrence wins 2nd Omega European Masters.. final results

DP World Tour : Omega European Masters Tee Times   Results

Thriston Lawrence became a two-time winner of the Omega European Masters after recovering from a disastrous start to post a closing 66 and secure a two-shot victory.

Lawrence

The South African went into the final round with a one-shot lead but made a bogey-bogey-bogey start to surrender his advantage and fall two behind.

With fellow past champions Matt Wallace and Matt Fitzpatrick now ahead of him, Lawrence had no choice but to force the issue and bravely took on the par-four sixth.

He was rewarded with an eagle there before firing five birdies in his next eight holes to open up a three-shot lead.

Lawrence's heart will have been in his mouth when his approach at the 15th flew towards the penalty area but he managed to save par before safely parring his way home to clinch his fifth DP World Tour title and a second at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club following his 2022 triumph.

More to follow.

Past champion Thriston Lawrence will take a one-shot lead into the final round of the 2025 Omega European Masters but has a stellar chasing pack containing more former winners just behind him.

Thriston Lawrence leads by one after three rounds
Thriston Lawrence leads by one after three rounds

With the tournament still playing catch-up following Thursday's lengthy fog delays, the third round did not begin until 3pm local time on day three and Lawrence only managed to complete 12 holes on Saturday before having to finish off his round on Sunday morning.

The South African, who won this event in 2022, started round three with a lengthy birdie at the difficult first hole before bouncing back from a dropped shot on the second with five successive gains from the fifth to surge into the lead.

He safely parred the tenth and 11th before firing a birdie on the 12th to reach -17 by the time play was suspended due to darkness.

Returning early on Sunday, Lawrence made another birdie from close range on the 14th to get to -18 and lead by one stroke ahead of defending champion Matt Wallace -17.

Two-time former winner Matt Fitzpatrick was another shot back on -16.

Lawrence said: "I'm very, very happy. I started with a nice long putt for birdie, which settled the nerves and got me going. Unfortunate bogey on the next but five birdies in a row after that - I'm really happy with the way I'm putting, hitting it fairly good.

There's still a lot of golf left and I've just got to try and do the same.

"The putter's been hot all week. I've made more long putts this week than I have in maybe a year. I've got a new putter in the bag, put it in last week for the first time and putted decent last week."

Frenchman Saddier, 36 hole lead, Cockerill MC at Omega European Masters...live Saturday scoreboard

DP World Tour : Omega European Masters Tee Times

Edit >>> 9.45am ET...Round 2 is now complete with round 3 just getting underway at 1500hrs local.

Follow all the scores by clicking on my link above.

Adrien Saddier set the clubhouse target at -13 on the second day of the weather-affected Omega European Masters after firing rounds of 62 and 65 on a marathon day in the Swiss mountains.

Adrien Saddier the man to catch at weather-affected Omega European Masters

The race to catch up following Thursday's lengthy fog delays saw Frenchman Saddier play 36 holes on Friday, having been unable to start his first round on day one.

After carding an eagle and six birdies in a flawless first round in the morning, Saddier returned to the course to add a 65 that contained six birdies and a single bogey.

With many groups still yet to begin their second rounds and many with holes to complete on Saturday where round 3 will not begin before 1430hrs local time, there is plenty of time for Saddier to be overtaken at the top before we reach the halfway stage of the tournament.

Defending champion Matt Wallace was Saddier's nearest challenger one shot behind after following up his opening 65 with a second-round 63 to reach -12.

Wallace's fellow Englishman Jordan Smith and South African Thriston Lawrence shared third place on -11 after 2 rounds.

Saddier said: "I'm pretty happy. It was a long day, to be honest.

"I got a good start this morning - the momentum was good on the first nine and then I just kept holing the putts.

"It was a good day and we like this kind of day. It was just nice to finish with a birdie."

Wallace, who made 15 birdies and three bogeys on Friday, said: "I had three great nines. I would put it that way.

edit >>> Canada's Aaron Cockerill had a forgettable 36 holes, between weather delays, posting 72 74 +7 some 20 shots off the lead, his next stop will be in Ireland for the Amgen Irish Open at the K Club.

The cut is projected to fall at -3.

Golfing amongst the clouds Omega European Masters..

DP World Tour : Omega European Masters Tee Times

There are many quirks of playing golf at 1,500 metres above sea level.

Crans fog 3

The thin air makes the ball move further but when the clouds come in, the air feels anything but thin.

In the Swiss mountains of Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club, what is called fog is often in fact cloud and on Thursday at the Omega European Masters, the clouds certainly played their part.

Here are some of the best images and videos from a remarkable day in Crans-Montana.

USA Ryder Cup captain Bradley announces 6 captains picks..

 2025 Ryder Cup

2177450201

Mike Stobe

American captain Keegan Bradley has announced his 6 captain's picks to complete his 2025 Ryder Cup squad for Bethpage Black course beginning on September 26th.

Qualifying 6 : Scheffler, Spaun, Schauffele, Henley, English, DeChambeau

Pick 6 : Morikawa, Thomas, Cantlay, Griffin, Burns, Young.

As I expected Bradley will stick to being captain, which despite some ill informed speculation, he had decided along, with council if he wanted it, from respected American Ryder Cup veterans (Jack Nicklaus etal).

At first glance those of you who follow the Ryder Cup will agree we already know what to expect from the regulars who play every year in this format and the Presidents Cup.

Scheffler (although he has that record 9&8 trouncing in bold italics on his CV), Schauffele, Morikawa, Thomas, Cantlay, even DeChambeau who seems to be finally growing up.

Rookies

JJ Spaun turned pro 2012, earned PGA Tour card 2016, was this far from packing it in until he won in 2022. Even at that, a middle of the pack grinder, relatively unknown around the world,  until 2025 with his career year culminating in the 2025 US Open, a truly inspirational week with the 75 foot put to top it off.

*Therefore I have questions if he would even had been selected if he did not qualify.

Russell Henley is a well respected solid pro, nothing flashy or spectacular, but gets it done with the tools he has.

* I would have him in my team knowing he could hold his own.

Ben Griffin again a relatively unknown who improved his game so much he had us all looking up his stats with his stellar play in 2025 with 2 wins. (1 a bit iffy, in the 2man team event in New Orleans). Solid guy, all round game this year.

* He gets his chance here, but again unproven at this Ryder Cup level.

Cameron Young  I would have picked for either team in a heartbeat, A New Yorker with a Bethpage connection on which he won the New York State Open. He is solid, hits it long, putts well had his heart set on it and will be hard to beat by anyone on the European Tour team.

* Inspired choice.

Notes re Sam Burns. He and Scheffler share their Christianity, are good friends. He is a real solid pro who leads the Tour in Strokes Gained Putting. However I followed him for 4 days at the CDN Open which he should have won.

He was unbeatable for 54 holes. He lost in a playoff to fast playing Ryan Fox after he missed a 6 footer with Fox about to shake his hand. Then flubbed a chip on the next playoff hole under pressure after Fox hit the 3 wood "of his life" to steal the win.

The the next week he led the US Open at Oakmont, again after 54 holes, went out and shot 78 on Sunday. Just keep those in mind.

Harris English is now a 36 year old veteran in his 2nd Ryder Cup, 1-2 record. Very quiet Georgian ranked #10 owgr. Have you ever heard of him ? Apparently ranked 20th in putting.

Lovely guy, but Bradley must know something we don't.

Schauffele, Morikawa and Thomas are usually rock solid members of the team.

However just beware Schauffele coming back off of injury admits he has been in "chase mode" in what has been an off year.

Morikawa is in the worst form of the 12 players, and lacks the length others have, a requirement at Bethpage.

Thomas is not ranked in top 15 in any of the 4 "metrics" in what has been at times a so so year, his one win at the RBC boosted his owgr to #5, but is a veteran member who had to be picked despite not being in great form.

Summary

So there you have it, the odds on favourites with the American media, playing at home at Bethpage in front of as rabid a crowd as they can get, with an inexperienced albeit passionate captain, who it must be said is a nervous wreck when he is playing, have an unusual number of question marks, don't they.

However, many would say so do the defending champions, who are unbeatable in nearly three decades at home, but have lost 3 of the last four in America.

This is the key, this is the secret to the Euros success.

They have always in the history of the Ryder Cup going back to 1926 been the underdogs, and especially prior to Seve and Europe arriving in 1979, when the American legends, Snead, Hogan, Palmer. Nicklaus, Trevino would  just rout the relatively unknown but brave British teams. It was rarely even close, and when it was guys like Brian Barnes who beat Jack Nicklaus twice in one match became British heroes.

That is still in the DNA, still remembered, never forgotten, it is still David vs Goliath, It will be again this time around, except David now carries a lot more stones in his sling.
