Schwartzel running away with South African title..Henley ahead in Maui

With round 3 well underway, Charl Schwartzel who has never won his national championship is red hot and has jumped to the top of the leaderboard at this South African Championship.

He  began the day one shot behind England's Andy Sullivan, but there was an eight-shot swing in the first four holes at Glendower Golf Club.

Schwartzel holed from 50 feet across the first green for birdie, from six feet on the second and 20 feet on the third before his approach to the fourth almost pitched straight into the hole and finished inches away.

That moved him to -11 while playing partner Sullivan failed to get up and down from a greenside bunker on the first on his way to four straight bogey's to drop to -5.

England's Lee Slattery has set the clubhouse target on -7 after a flawless 65.

Host Ernie Els fired a third round of 69 to leave the five-time winner at -3.

Meanwhile amidst the spectacular scenery in Maui, including all those whales breaching, Russell Henley putted beautifully on his way to an -8 65, giving him a one-shot lead over Bae Sang-Moon in the opening round of the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, this winners-only event that starts the year. The Plantation Course offered up far better scores than usual without the typical wind off the west coast.

Bae is facing trouble with his south Korean authorities as he is trying to delay his period of mandatory military service..

Most players have not competed in nearly two months. Bubba Watson has been at Kapalua for the last week with his newly adopted 2nd child and he had a 70, a reasonable start, though he has yet to break 69 in 12 rounds on the Plantation Course.

Jimmy Walker and Patrick Reed led a group at 67 that included Scott Stallings, Robert Streb and Ben Martin.

Canada’s Nick Taylor fired a solid 69 that left him tied for 12th after the opening-round.
