Kiwi Ko tops the field in LPGA season opener..

LPGA Tour live scoreboard http://espn.go.com/golf/leaderboard?tour=lpga

Having met so many athletes, performers personally in my career, you often wonder when you see them in their civvies away from the bright lights, and you realize how they have human frailties like all the rest of us, why they are so special.

For example,I have the good fortune of calling, now Sir Cliff Richard a good friend as he would always come to my tennis center when he was performing at the PlayHouse in Edinburgh, and we'd spend hours on court as he happily learned the game. It wasn't until I'd go to the concert at night and listened and watched him drive the packed crowd into a frenzy with all his hits that you were reminded that the guy who just wanted to be able to hit a forehand hours earlier really was special..

Lydia Ko falls into that category. We all met her as she won our national title twice, and when you see her at 15 with her iphone, big glasses, pig tails, hopelessly giggly and girly.. you think there goes another little geek..

Then she steps onto the tee in her golf gear, swings the club and everything changes..

Yesterday the now 17-year-old Kiwi shot a -7 65 -14 in the third round of the Coates Golf Championship to take a one shot lead, and if she wins today folks, she will become the youngest golfer to be ranked No. 1. In fact Ko can finish second or third today and still pass current #1 Inbee Park, who is  T17th at -3.

She leads Ha Na Jang who is a stroke back at -13 203 after a -171 while yet another South Korean Na Yeon Choi shot a -6 66 -12. Stacy Lewis (70) is -10. Amy Yang (65) -9, Jessica Korda (69)-9 and Austin Ernst (70) -9

Alena Sharp is away behind T55 +3 72 69 78.. Plays wraps up today because of the Super Bowl tomorrow..
