San Diego boy Mickelson ties for the lead at Torrey Pines... Weir dead last

Tiger Woods dropped 12 spots to a T24 at  +2 74 and is not in contention, he is 8 shots back. So let's concentrate on the rest. He was 3 over through 5 holes, drove the ball erratically, had some shoddy wedge play and didn't putt particularly well to post his highest score ever at Torrey Pines

Phil Mickelson had a -4 68 today to join Bill Haas (71) at -12 in the lead. Unfortunately at the other end of the field, Mike Weir struggled to a +6 78 and is at 220, 16 shots behind and dead last. He birdied the 1st and the 18th but uncharacteristically had 8 bogey's in between including five in a row from 13-17 and I can't ever remember him doing that.

Mickelson has decided to shelve his go for broke style for a much more conservative approach to the Rees Jones re-designed South Course... I'm not taking on the risk. I'm just playing it much more conservative because the reward isn't there," he said. "This course doesn't reward you for taking on any challenge. And my more conservative approach into the greens, albeit boring, has led me to be on top of the leader board

Another of Sean Foley's pupils Hunter Mahan 69, eagled 18 as did lanky Bubba Watson,69, to sit a shot back of the leaders at -11 and Anthony Kim 71, is hanging in there at -10

Speaking of hanging in there, how about Jhonattan Vegas 69, beating Tiger by 5 shots to stand in there 6th and just 3 shots behind.

I was saddened to see John Daly slip to a +4 76, not so much the score, but as usual it is the way he seems to want to rush to self destruction as soon as he misses a couple of shots. Honestly if I was his caddy and I saw that fatal slide of his starting I would hide with his clubs somewhere in a portaloo just to make him slow down, have a smoke, think things through and realize he is still in it.

With cold weather and rain in the forecast the players will be paired in 3's for the final round and will go off the first and 10th. Haas, Mickelson and Mahan are the last pairing off #1 at 1005am or 1.05pm est.

Mike Weir ironically is off #10 at the same time playing in a twosome with our Canadian Open champ Carl Pettersson.
