Appleby leads the Sony, McQuillan T24... Round 3 underway in Joburg.

In soft condition and only a light breeze, 65 players in the 144-man field broke par on this rain soaked Waialae Country Club in Honolulu, Hawaii which is protected somewhat by a par of 70..

Stuart Appleby who finished 30th last week is the best of the bunch with his -6 64 after round one.

Appleby shot 30 on the back nine, including a chip-in from the front of the 12th green. Then he holed a 5-iron from 165 yards for eagle on the 16th , then made a 30 footer for birdie on the 17th

That gave him a one-shot lead over nine players including Matt Kuchar (65) and Justin Rose (65)

Applebys round at a glance: 10/14 fairways, 15/18 greens, 28 putts.

Rookie Matt McQuillan of Kingston, Ont., was in a large group T24 at 2-under 68, while Chris Baryla of Vernon, B.C., is T113, +3 73, and David Hearn of Brantford, Ont., finished T85, +1 71.

McQuillan's up and down round started on the front 9 with 4 birdies and 3 bogey's, then he came home with 3 birdies and 2 bogey's for his -2 68..(.*note.. I told you about one of his rookie playing partners Michael Thompson yesterday.. well he is dead last after a +10, 80 which included 9 bogey's and a double !!! yikes)

David Hearn starting on the 10th, had a steady string of pars except for a bogey at 13, but took a double on the first and a bogey on 6, but fought back with 3 birdies for his +1 71

Chris Baryla also was off the 10th, and had nothing but pars on the way out, but then made bogey on 4 of his first 6 holes on the way in, recovered with a birdie on the 8th, but still an opening +3 73 so he needs a big round today to make the cut..

Because an entire round was washed out, the plan is to play the second round today, followed by a 36-hole marathon on Sunday
