Rookie Korean sensation leads at Torrey Pines

On a day when all eyes were on Tiger Woods and to a certain extent Phil Mickelson it was the youth movement led by 24 year old Korean rookie Sunghoon Kang who stole the show on a beautiful day for golf along the southern California coastline.

Kang, who finished T16 at 2010 PGA tour Q School and was Rookie of the Year on the Korean tour last year shot a -8, 64 in his third career round on the PGA TOUR. Kang, who turned 24 on January 4, was -4 on the par-5s and he threw in an eagle chip in on 14.

This course, all the par 5s are reachable, so I really tried to keep to the fairways and it worked really well," Kang said. "And I really had a good chance on the par 5s. That's why I played very well today."

I mentioned the youth movement  and yesterday I wrote about Puma getting a bang for their buck with Johan Edfors wearing their cap as he leads in Bahrain, well it was another of their stars Rickie Fowler who was voted the PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year in 2010 and Alex Prugh who are second at -7 65 then Chris Kirk -6 66 who finished second on the Nationwide Tour last year

Nice to see John Daly in at -5 67 T5. Remember his playoff win in 2004,  then his meltdown a year ago after he missed the cutafter rounds of 79-71, and told everyone that he was done.

Phil Mickelson is also in T5 67 -5

Tiger is T22 -3 69 no bogey's 3 birdies, no fireworks.

Nothing remarkable from our Canucks either..

Chris Baryla  T54 -1 71
Mike Weir T77  E 72
David Hearn T113  +2 74
Matt McQuillan T113  +2 74
Stephen Ames  T124  +3 75

As for last weeks big story Jhonattan Vegas.. He is also T22 like Tiger at -3 69, but yesterday he was already the forgotten man, as was everyone for that matter, as expected all that mattered to the media was Tiger...

More of the same to follow later today..
