Michael Gligic is enjoying his rookie season on tour, especially after an opening bogey free -4 67 has him T5 just two shots behind first round leader Russell Knox, Scottish born resident of Florida who shot -6 65. He plays at 9.50am today

Gligic is tall and lean 6'4", now 31 from Burlington has 2 missed cuts in 6 events this year, a T14 and T11 in the wind in Bermuda. It was windy on Friday in Playa del Carmen, but the resort course is very soft.

Cockerill looking for a better week at South African Championship.. full leaderboard

Christiaan Bezuidenhout's bid to secure back to back European Tour titles got off to a strong start as he posted an opening 67 to claim a share of the early clubhouse lead on day one of the 2020 South African Open.

Fresh from his magnificent four shot victory at last week's Alfred Dunhill Championship, home favourite Bezuidenhout - starting at the tenth - made five birdies on his front nine before mixing one birdie with the only bogey of his round on the back nine to head into the clubhouse on five under par.

Fellow South Africans Jacques Kruyswijk and Dean Burmester were alongside Bezuidenhout at the top of the leaderboard at Gary Player Country Club, as was Austrian Matthias Schwab after he made an eagle and three birdies in a flawless first round.

Bezuidenhout has enjoyed enormous success on home soil so far this year, winning the Dimension Data Pro-Am - co-sanctioned by the European Challenge Tour - in February before clinching his second European Tour title at Leopard Creek Country Club four days ago.

And the 26-year-old continued to shine on Thursday morning as he opened his first round with successive birdies at the tenth and 11th before taking advantage of the two par threes on his front nine - the 13th and 16th.

Bezuidenhout, who is up to ninth on the Race to Dubai Rankings Presented by Rolex following last week's win, reached the turn in 31 after picking up another shot at the long 18th.

Canada's Aaron Cockerill who missed the  cut last week at Leopard Creek, has opened T22 -1 71. It could have been better as he was all pars and 3 birdies until a double bogey 7 at the 18th put a damper on his day.

Andy Sullivan continued his rich vein of form at Jumeirah Golf Estates - Fire Course to take a three shot lead at the halfway mark of the 2020 Golf in Dubai Championship presented by DP World.

Sullivan produced a stunning 61 to set the new course record during the first round and hold a two shot overnight lead but when he started on Thursday afternoon, he found himself three shots behind fellow Englishman Ross Fisher.

Fisher has yet to card a bogey in Dubai but he was eventually overtaken by a patient Sullivan, who had birdie chances on every hole on the back nine, to sign for a 66 and 17 under par overall.

Matt Wallace joined Fisher at 14 under in a tie for second, with Scot Craig Howie, German Max Schmitt and Frenchman Antoine Rozner two shots further back to round off the top five.

"It was basically just to stay patient and give ourselves as many chances as possible," Sullivan said.

"It is hard, as much as I had to work hard at staying patient today, when I was three under through nine it didn't feel as good as yesterday.

"You know you are still on the right track. I knew I was swinging it well and I knew if I kept giving myself opportunities I could make a few coming in. If you told me I would shoot 61-66, I would have snapped your hand off.

"It sounds cliche but I just stuck to my process of what I could do. It was the only thing I can control out there and it's been working. I feel like I have the golf ball in some sort of control at the moment. It just feel really comfortable out there."

Andy Sullivan shot a flawless 61 on his way to a new course record as he flirted with European Tour history during the first round of the inaugural Golf in Dubai Championship presented by DP World

The Englishman went out in the fourth group of the day, starting on the back nine, and he took full advantage of early conditions in the United Arab Emirates to deliver a birdie frenzy and celebrate Fire Course's debut on the European Tour in sensational style.

Sullivan recorded 11 birdies in a bogey free opening round and needed to finish his final three holes in three under to become only the second person to record a 59 in European Tour history - after Oli Fisher at the 2018 Portugal Masters.

A birdie at the par five seventh boosted his chances but he brushed the cup with his long birdie putt at the eighth. Sullivan could have scored 59 at the par four ninth - his last - if he holed out in two but he pushed his tee shot into the rough.

His approach landed seven feet away, however, Sullivan could not drain the birdie putt as he carded a stunning 11 under par - two shots ahead of Frenchman Antoine Rozner and English duo Matt Wallace and Ross Fisher.

"It’s funny, I played the front nine yesterday and I played the back nine a year ago when we came over to warm up, you do all this prep on these courses and try and work out where to hit it," Sullivan said.

"This week I turned up and clattered it down and found myself being ridiculous under par through seven or eight holes on my front nine. You think ‘here we go’.

"Covid really changed everything for me. I refocused and started enjoying it again. Let's face it I've been a bit of an idiot out there.  I’ve started to play a lot better. Going out there and enjoying it I know I’m giving myself the best chance to shoot a low score.

"Coming back to Jumeirah, I’ve always played pretty tidy here on the other course. It’s nice to get off to a flier on this one."

Six Canadians playing this weekend at the Mayakoba Golf Classic

 PGA Tour Mayakoba Golf Classic is this week's stop on the  PGA Tour where Brendon Todd returns to defend his title.

There are six Canadians who have flown down to the El Camaleon GC, par 71, 7039 yards in Playa del Carmen, Mexico including Monday qualifier Drew Nesbitt of Shanty Bay, Ont., who shot -6 66 to grab one of 4 spots. He joins Adam Hadwin, Roger Sloan, Corey Connors, Michael Gligic and David Hearn.

You'll remember the low amateur at the Masters, Andy Ogletree. He has turned pro to start his bank account and makes his debut. Justin Thomas and Brooks Koepka are the highest ranked player

South African Christian Bezuidenhout wins at Leopard Creek.. final scoreboard

Christian Bezuidenhout claimed his second European Tour title as a brilliantly composed bogey-free back nine of 34 handed him a four shot victory at the 2020 Alfred Dunhill Championship.

The home favourite entered the final day at Leopard Creek Country Club three shots off the lead and despite making a double and a bogey on the front nine to turn in 35, he had trimmed that gap to one at the turn.

As the rest of the leading contenders fought for their maiden victories, Bezuidenhout then used all of his experience to card three birdies on the way home in a 69 to finish at 14 under, clear of England's Richard Bland, American Sean Crocker, Pole Adrian Meronk and South African Jayden Schaper.

Bezuidenhout's route to the top has been a remarkable one, as he revealed in a European Tour Player Blog in March of last year.

He nearly died after accidentally drinking rat poison as a child, an event that saw him develop a stutter and anxiety, the medication for which led to him being handed a ban as an amateur.

Bezuidenhout was cleared of using any form of drug to enhance his performance, but his nine month exile from the game meant he missed the Eisenhower Trophy..
