Graham DeLaet will hit the first tee shot of this year's Sony Open on the venerable Waialae GC, on Oahu in Hawaii at 7.10am local time off the first tee.
He leads a pack of seven Canucks at this first full field event of 2020. Matt Kuchar is the defending champion, last week's winner Justin Thomas, a past champion is also in the field in what is forecast to be a windy week.
Corey Connors T19 last week at the Tournament of Champions and as a Monday qualifier last year he ended up T3 here.
Nick Taylor, Mac Hughes, Michael Gligic, David Hearn and Roger Sloan are also in the field.

Australia is burning..here's how you can help PGA Tour pros to fight..
Australian golfers Mark Leishman, Cameron Smith, Matt Jones, Cameron Davis, Cameron Percy and Rhein Gibson and their supporters are donating up to $800 per birdie and $2000 per eagle at this weeks Sony Open which will be matched by the Presidents Cup and the PGA Tour towards the extensive bushfires that are devastating their country.
To date, more than 7.3 million hectares (17.9 million acres or over 28,000 square miles) have been burned across Australia's six states – an area larger than the American state of West Virginia. The burn area is also larger than the countries of Belgium and Denmark combined.
For comparison, the 2019 Amazon rainforest fires burned more than 7 million hectares while California’s wildfires combined to burn just over 100,000 hectares in 2019 and 404,000 hectares in 2018.
Multiple fires are still raging. There have been 24 lives lost and destruction of homes is in the thousands. The wildlife of the country has also taken a cataclysmic hit also with estimates of half a billion animals being affected.
They are calling on pro golfers around the world to join in. Firefighters and volunteers are flocking to Australia to help, many at their own expense.
This is an unprecedented national crisis with temperatures soaring over 50*c.

Brooks Koepka to return at Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship
News today from the European Tour that world #1 Brooks Koepka will return to play at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship January 16-19, after being out of action since October with an knee injury.
It is the first of the lucrative 8 event Rolex Series on the 2020 European Tour schedule with each event guaranteeing a minimum $7 million US prize fund which included a world record $3m first prize last season at the Race To Dubai finale.
In fact he will kick off that week at the Hero Challenge, an innovative 6 man shootout on the Formula One Yas Marina Circuit on Tuesday evening January 14.

Corey Connors bright future moves up in world rankings

With rounds of 73 70 74 73 -2 and a T19 at the Sentry Tournament of Champions, Corey Connors has moved up 2 spots in the world rankings to 58th and will now jump islands from Maui to Oahu to join 6 other Canadians at this weeks Sony Open. Anything in the top 50 opens the pandora's box of riches on the world's golf tours.
Graham DeLaet, Michael Gligic, David Hearn, Mac Hughes, Roger Sloan and Nick Taylor all have the dubious pleasure of spending another week in the Hawaiian Islands as this gentle start to 2020 gets under way for the PGA pros.
Justin Thomas outlasted Xander Schauffele and Patrick Reed to win the #TOC on the 3rd playoff hole. Although it was only a 34 man field, it is his 2nd win at this event and his career 12th, all in the last 5 years, the most of anyone currently on tour, he gets full Fed Ex Cup points and of course another $1m plus. Not bad for a week's working holiday in Maui.
Connors and his college sweetheart, wife Malory now live in a beautiful big south Florida home a long way from Kitchener where he was born and Listowel where he grew up, (next door to Malory by the way)
All this due to his big win at the Valero Texas Open the week before the Masters last year.
With 2 years full membership on the PGA Tour and some financial security, he and Malory can plan his playing schedule and this two weeks in Hawaii are just the at the beginning of what promises to be a wonderful adventure which has already seen him travel to international destinations like China and Japan.
Reknown as a great ball striker, any improvement in his putting should ensure a lengthy career, and with his Canadian feet firmly on the ground and Malory and their families right behind him, he seems to have an ideal balance.
He Monday qualified for the Sony Open last year and ended up T3 on the par 70 Waialae course.

My tribute to Sam Wyche
Like so many who knew him, I was saddened to hear that my friend Sam Wyche, or Coach Wyche to everybody in the NFL, especially Cincinnati, succumbed to liver cancer at home with his beloved wife Jane yesterday.
In a recent interview, Sam who had a heart transplant in 2016 and had been diagnosed with cancer of the liver last year said, " I'm doing what I want to do, cycling and going to chemo 5 days a week. Either I'm going to beat this cancer or it's going to wear me out"
As a producer you look for interesting guests who are timely, interesting or informative, and when I met Sam in 2002 he was all three. His lovely wife Jane with her extraordinary southern drawl answered my first phone call and said " he's at practice, call back later"
I thought I had a scoop, Sam who'd last coached the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1995 was coaching again?!!
" Naw Bryan, he's coachin' the Flame, you know the Pickens Blue Flame!"
That began our friendship, his self deprecating sense of humour about life in Pickens SC led to interviews with us on the "Fan590" morning show from his tractor in the annual Pickens parade, his classroom as a supply teacher, at the hotcakes special breakfast in the General Store, and once with the gas station attendant in Oneida South Dakota where he was visiting his daughter Kerry.
After a distinguished football career as a player and coach his broadcast career ended with a botched operation on lymph nodes which severed his vocal chord, but he settled happily in Pickens with Jane and her horses, and soon were running the Pickens "meals on wheels" program.
He was picked up as QB coach by the Bills in 2004, and helped me enormously as I could call him in his hotel at 6am as he prepared for his days of film and practice with the team. He gave me introductions to players, what info he could on the team, and contacts throughout the NFL, all of whom ended up on the air.
He got lonely at night for home and Jane during his 2 years in Buffalo and we spoke a lot about life during many of those evenings, including his brother Bubba's tenure as a QB with Saskatchewan.
He was a very caring guy by nature, was a giver rather than a taker, and for all his fame had his feet firmly on the ground. He once signed off by saying after his heart transplant. " Heck Bry I didn't think we'd be talking again after my heart gave out, now I've got a new one so don't be a stranger"
I'll be calling Jane soon I know she will be devastated, but I also know Sam will have done everything to prepare her and the family for the inevitable. He was that kind of guy.

Th winners from 2019 are invited to the Plantation course in Kapalua, on the island of Maui, an ultra rich resort in one of the most stunning locals on earth, surrounded by the blue Pacific and all of the sea life you can imagine. The sponsors can't do enough to coddle their special guests.
Corey Connors is in the field on the basis of his win in Houston last year, along with 33 other players, wives, kids, parents and significant others. Most of them will take a short island hop to Oahu for the full field Sony Open on the historic tight little Waialae course in behind the Diamond Head volcano next week.
Corey fired 3 birdies and 3 bogey's to T22 E 73 in his opening round.
Four players from the Presidents cup fill the top 3 spots. Joaquin Niemann from Columbia leads -7 66, Justin Thomas 2nd -6 67, with Matt Kuchar and Rickie Fowler 3rd -5 68 in ideal weather that is about to change.
Traditional winds gusting 20 - 35kph are set to arrive for the next 3 days, and that coupled with a new set of greens will likely raise the field's scoring average.

All the very best to you all as this historic 2020 year is now underway in extremely mild weather here in Southern Ontario, and of course much warmer where the 34 winners from 2019 gather at Kapalua for the Tournament of Champions, the traditional first stop on the PGA Tour.
