For those of us who know Keith Pelley as a friend and a colleague, there is no surprise at the job he is doing as the CEO of the European Tour. Everyone in sports in this country knows his resume with TSN, Sportsnet and as President of the Argos.
However he is a complete unknown in Europe so had the old boys network to deal with when he assumed his position this year. With his wife on board, and his kids living in style in the prestigious leafy lanes of Virginia Water in Surrey, not far from London he set about to make the European Tour the place for all his players, stars and journeymen alike, to make as much money as they can on the PGA Tour. He has travelled to every stop on the schedule and has sat and listened to what they are telling him.
This week begins a step in the right direction, with the new Rolex Series, the premium tournament category on the European Tour’s International Schedule. Presently comprising eight tournaments, staged in a variety of golfing locations around the world, Rolex Series events will offer a minimum prize fund of US$7 million per event.
It also includes the Scottish, Irish and French Opens, and culminates in the season ending DP World Championship in Dubai.
Andrew Dodt, a veteran Aussie, a 2 time winner has the Sunday lead 70 70 68 -8 in what has been a breezy week on the west course at Wentworth with it's all new greens.
However the wind has dropped today, they have made some of the pins a wee bit more accessible and the leaderboard is full of red numbers, the best of the bunch is south African Dean Burmester who is -6 through 15 holes and is now just a shot behind his fellow countryman Brandon Grace who is in the final group with Dodt, at -7.
Watch for Henrik Stenson, he looks good today and has back to back birdies to move to -6, Lee Westwood only used 23 putts yesterday and he is in contention in a large group at -5, so it is a jam packed leaderboard.
Remember this historic course has a par 3, par 5 par 5 finish which has been the setting for so many memorable championships....
Today should be no different.
