Patrick Reed set the clubhouse target on day one of The 145th Open Championship, with his opening -5 66 equalling the record for the lowest opening round in an Open Championship at Royal Troon on a day of perfect scoring conditions on the Ayrshire coast.
Currently he has a one shot lead lead over countrymen Justin Thomas -4 67, Billy Horschel -4 67 and Steve Stricker -4 67.
The tide has gone out and with it the little breeze has dropped, so this afternoon wave may produce someone else at -5. There are a host of guys in at -3 including Justin Rose.
As for the big boys, Jason Day shot a disappointing +2 73, Rory had an up and down day ending up with -2 69, Jordan Spieth had 33 putts on his way to E71. Rickie Fowler is in with -2 69.
Dustin Johnson shanked his iron off the first into the deepest rough, almost out of bounds, eventually aided by a small army he found it and salvaged a bogey. He is still +1 on his front nine.
Phil Mickelson is going the best of the late wave, he is -4 through 7 holes..
Today is the day for scoring, the weather will not get better for the next 3 days, wind and rain in the forecast. With the ideal conditions and greens running at only 10 on the stimpmeter I am surprised there wasn't a 62 or 63 out there and certainly not just one 66.
We'll see what the late wave brings...
