European Tour Irish Open presented by the Rory Foundation leaderboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2016/tournamentid=2016038/leaderboard/index.html
Scotland's Marc Warrren has posted the round of the day so far, a -6 66 to share the lead -8 at the venerable K Club, but with all due respect it is the play of Masters champion Danny Willett -1 71 -8 total and favourite son and host Rory McIlroy who birdied the last for -2 70, -7 3rd that has Irish eyes smiling despite the wind and rain, halfway through the second round.
McIlroy has missed the cut for the last 3 years at his national championship declared himself pleased with his play from tee to green in recent outings, described his round as a bit erratic but he has started make some putts to the delight of his family and friends who have arrived for the weekend.
Willett playing his first tournament in Europe since his career changing Masters win, also has his family including his newborn son with him. Both players took advantage of calmer morning conditions, the afternoon wave is facing increasing wind and rain.
Massive crowds have turned out which will help swell the funds of the Rory Foundation which is exactly why he has lent his name to the event.
The Rory Foundation is a non-profit charitable trust with the ambition to have a positive impact on children’s and their families lives. Their goal is to release funds that seek to advance opportunity and lasting change for children who are suffering from ill health or who are unfairly disadvantaged or vulnerable to lifes circumstances.
