Schwartzel wins a record 4th Alfred Dunhill Championship

European Tour Alfred Dunhill Championship leaderboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2016/tournamentid=2015092/leaderboard/index.html?showLeaderboard=Y#i37drtOqKKwFU0OW.97

Charl Schwartzel has now won this championship 4 times at Leopard Creek, although after a front nine in 36 it looked like it was going to be a struggle.

Jaco Van Zyl had posted an earlier -8 64 and was in the clubhouse at -7, so the guys behind him knew a low score is possible, but none of Schwartzel's pursuers could post one, and when he came home in 34 strokes for a 70 -15 total, it was enough for a four shot victory over 3 Frenchmen, Gregory Bourdy at -11, Benjamin Hebert at -10 and Sebastien Gros at -9.

Schwartzel has not won except for here, since his 2011 Masters. He had won at Leopard Creek in 2005, 2013 and 2014. With his fourth Alfred Dunhill Championship he becomes the first and youngest South African to win an official European Tour event four times and the third of his countrymen to win ten events behind Ernie Els and Retief Goosen.

To say he plays well on this magnificent course that runs adjacent to the Kruger National Park is an understatement. He is 122 under par in his 11 visits to Leopard Creek.

The victory puts him back in the top 40 and he said afterwards he is glad to see his hard work paying off. "It feels good, the way I've played the last few years, I've been down in quite a slump, I didn't really see myself coming out and winning. But we've put in so much hard work in the last 18 months and it's frustrating when week-in, week-out you're playing and it feels like it's never going to turn. I guess there's no better fit than for it to turn around here. This place has treated me really well. I got my first win here and now my tenth so I think it's pretty fitting

Matt Jones edges Spieth, Scott to win Emirates Australian Open

Emirates Australian Open final leaderboard http://www.ausopengolf.com/scores

It's unusual to say a double bogey was one of the keys to winning your national championship, but for Matt Jones that indeed was what happened down in beautifully sunny Sydney, Australia overnight.

Playing with his young friend, neighbour from Dallas and world #1 Jordan Spieth, Jones admitted he was nervous at the start of his round and it showed as he started bogey, double bogey, and having given up the 3 shot lead to the chasing pack it settled his nerves and as he said in his post round interviews, "I knew I still had lots of holes left to make birdies"

He did just that at the fourth and sixth, but then he gave it all away again at the ninth where his second hit top of a tree in front of him and dove into the water resulting in a triple bogey seven and suddenly he was tied for the lead with first Rod Pampling who had a remarkable career round of 61, then Adam Scott playing beautifully and ending with a 65, both players would finish before him at -7, so Jones playing in that final pair knew what he needed to do.

He ended up with what he called a 'sloppy"73 and there were many twists and turns on the back nine but the two keys for me came on the 12th where drove into the trees, punched out and put his 3rd into the greenside bunker, and promptly holed his 4th for par, a shot gained when Spieth made bogey.

Then the second came at the 16th where he hit a perfect 5 iron draw to 10 feet and made the birdie putt to get to -8.

He scrambled down the 17th for par after another wayward drive, and after Spieth added to a grandstand finish by getting on the par 5 18th in 2 with an eagle putt coming from just 15 feet, Jones almost hit his 3rd in the water but as the golfing gods would have it, it bounced onto the green 25 feet away from his name on the famous Stonehaven Cup

Jordan missed the eagle, Jones lagged up to 3 feet, then all the emotion was released as the winning putt just crept into the left side... "I was just lucky it caught the left lip and went in. I thought I'd missed it left but one of those things ... it just went in and I was very, very happy"

"To have my name on this trophy with like (Jack) Nicklaus, (Jack) Newton, Norman, all those guys, it’s a dream come true for me and it's something that I can’t have taken away from me.''

So it wasn't pretty but it was dramatic, Scott 65, Spieth 71 and Pampling 61 all finished a shot behind at -7 but it was the highlight of his career for Jones, who was born and learned to play in Sydney, in fact is a member at the Australian. He moved away for a golf scholarship in the States, became a pro, settled in Scottsdale and had to wait until he was 34 last year for his first win, the Houston Open which got him into the Masters but as I said this 100th playing of the Aussie Open is the big one.

He set off for a night of celebration surrounded by his friends, family including his lovely wife and two gorgeous little blonde haired daughters, and now forever by his heroes and peers as the champion golfer of Australia, with his name on the Stonehaven Cup to prove it.

Frenchman Gros cuts into Schwartzel's lead at Alfred Dunhill Championship

European Tour Alfred Dunhill Championship leaderboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2016/tournamentid=2015092/leaderboard/index.html?showLeaderboard=Y#bOIaeRCAK0fup7l8.97

When round 3 began this morning, Charl Schwartzel had followed up his opening 66 with a 67 to get to -11 to lead Benjamin Hebert, Joost Luiten, Pablo Martin and Richard Sterne by a commanding five shots.

However that has all changed after European Tour rookie Frenchman Sebastien Gros, who is playing just his second European Tour event after finishing second on The Challenge Tour last season, made nine birdies in his first 16 holes for the week's best -9 63 to move to -10 for the clubhouse lead, currently just one shot behind Schwartzel, the 3 time winner at spectacular Leopard Creek.

Meanwhile defending champion Branden Grace who barely made the cut, moved well up the leaderboard by firing a 66 to get to -6 currently T7.

Schwartzel is on course right now in the 3rd round late wave..

A lecture from his caddy turns Spieth into a contender at the Emirates Australian Open

Emirates Australian Open leaderboard http://www.ausopengolf.com/scores

They are good friends, mates as they say in Australia, both live and practice together back home in Dallas, Texas and tomorrow they will be in the final pair playing for a lot more that a $100 Nassau.

Jordan Spieth, with a talking to by his caddie of the year Michael Greller after 3 bogey's in his first 4 holes burst into contention with three birdies and a spectacular eagle in his closing seven holes to shoot -4 67 -7 total, just 3 shots behind Aussie, Matt Jones who fired a second consecutive 68, -10 for the lead at his national championship, the Emirates Australian Open.

Jones at 35, only has one win in his pro career, the 2014 Houston Open that placed him at an all time high #41 in the world rankings. Spieth at 22 is of course the world #1, and remember he kicked off his player of the year 2015 season with a final round 63 here last year to get his name on the treasured Stonehaven Cup.

The supporting cast include Rhein Gibson (68) at -5, while Aron Price and first round leader Lincoln Tighe are at -4 after respective 70's.

Geoff Ogilvy is next at -3 (71), with Adam Scott (68), Brett Rumford (69), Darren Clarke (70) and Todd Sinnott (74) being the only others under par at -1 in very windy conditions.

As for the talking to by Greller, Spieth revealed afterwards that after another bogey at the 8th, "Michael did a great of setting the goal for me there,' he said, 'Right, let's get to even par for the day by the time we step on 18 tee box. That way we can shoot under par and move on'.

“He said, 'Enough of this crap. No bad self-talk. Let's hit some greens, you've got some easy holes coming up.That's all I really needed to hear to help turn it around.''

Turn it around he did, highlighted with a holed 8 iron from 170 yards for eagle 2 at 17, then a tap in birdie on 18 to set the stage for later today, Sunday in Australia as Jones tries to join Aussie greats like Greg Norman as their national champion, and his mate Spieth tries to defend.

I'll talk with you then..

Schwartzel sets the standard during round 2 of the Alfred Dunhill Championship

European Tour Alfred Dunhill Championship leaderboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2016/tournamentid=2015092/leaderboard/index.html#cF7MBkD8HWvpMls5.97

Former Masters champion and three times the winner here at Leopard Creek, Charl Schwartzel, playing in the early wave in a neon green shirt and snappy dark blue pants and hat, has added a 67 to his opening 66 to set the clubhouse lead at -11.

Adding to his nine European Tour titles he has had two wins and been second twice in the last four years, so seeing his name atop the leaderboard is old news and he told the press he feels he  is swinging it "better than it's ever, ever been"

First round leader after a stunning 64 is Christiaan Basson who is in the late wave today. Playing with his girlfriend as his caddie, and physio, Eddie Pepperell posted the low round of the day so far with a 65. Starting on the 10th he picked up eight shots in nine holes in the middle of his round

There is a large group now finished at -4 led by Thomas Aiken 68 and Ben Evans 69.

The projected cut is E, and Louis Oosthuizen at +4 can blame the par 3 7th if he's not around for the weekend, as he made the dreaded snowman (8) this morning and is +5 on the hole over 2 rounds.

The wind has freshened and is swirling around this beautiful Leopard Creek course making club selection difficult for the afternoon wave.

Jones leads, Spieth in contention at Australian Open

Emirates Australian Open leaderboard http://www.ausopengolf.com/scores

Matt Jones was born in Sydney, lives in Texas and at 35 has golfed all around the world, but has never won his national championship, but after a -3 68 -7 total he is halfway to etching his name on the Stonehaven Cup.

After two rounds down under he leads by three shots from 23 year old rookie Todd Sinnott 70 -4 total, who takes heart from the achievements of #1 Jordan Spieth who moved into contention to defend his title with -3 68, along with Belgium's Nicolas Colsaerts 66, and former champion Geoff Ogilvy 71, all four shots behind Jones.

First round leader Lincoln Tighe slipped to 73 and Web.com Tour player Aron Price 68 are also -3 while PGA Tour pro Rhein Gibson 68 is alone at -2

It looks like the majority of the fans are following Spieth who had it going but spoiled a really great day with two late bogeys for his 68 then had this to say. "I feel like I've still got the best golf yet to be played, that's what's positive, that's what I'm going with.''

Adam Scott needs a big weekend at +2 after today's 73, he is 9 shots behind his countryman Jones.

Spieth, Scott open Emirates Australian Open with even pars

Emirates Australian Open leaderboard http://www.ausopengolf.com/scores

Long hitting Lincoln Tighe has opened the Emirates Australian Open with a brilliant round of -5 66  in the wind to take the lead at the course they call The Australian today.

Tighe is ranked #1022 in the world so this was one of his best tournament rounds in a tough hot wind with temperatures hovering at 40*c. He won NSW PGA Championship last year and plays most of his golf on the Australasian Tour, although he has reached the final stage of the Web.com Tour school in the United States, where he intends to be playing next year.

The Australian played incredibly tough with a strong north-westerly that had the scoring average well above 74 and only one hole averaged under par, the par-five 14th which played downwind.

Hometown man Matt Jones who is a member here, is his closest challenger after a -4 67 in the tougher afternoon conditions while Geoff Ogilvy, Todd Sinnott and Taiwanese amateur Chun-An Yun are a further shot back at -3 68.

Ogilvy played alongside world #1 and defending champion Jordan Spieth who opened with a steady if unspectacular E 71, while the other headliner Adam Scott, now #12 in the world, started his day with a birdie at the first, but faltered with double bogeys at the seventh and ninth to also shoot 71.

2016 Race to Dubai underway at stunning Leopard Creek CC, RSA..

European Tour Alfred Dunhill Championship leaderboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2016/tournamentid=2015092/leaderboard/index.html#Ah71wdDfOJ8mlMKE.97

The Leopard Creek CC is arguably one of the most stunning settings in golf. Situated near the town of Malalane the course and it's housing estate are separated by an electrified fence and a river from magnificent Kruger National Park, with the entire spectrum of wildlife, elephants, crocodiles, water buffalo, eagles, springboks and of course leopards on full view from many of the golf course vantage points. Louis Oosthuizen was saying that the park is very dry this year, so big game sighting is even better because the bush is not as thick as usual.

It is here that the 2016 Race to Dubai gets underway in conjunction with the Sunshine Tour every year, with a strong fields of South Africans led by Presidents Cup partners Louis Oosthuizen and Branden Grace, along with Masters champion Charles Schwartzel and a sprinkling of European Tour regulars looking  to get their seasons off to a lucrative start. Many of these top players have been away from South Africa for 9 months, so it is always a joy for them to return.

The weather today is simply stunning, big blue skies, a hot wind, lush jungle vegetation, mountains a valley, it is overwhelming.

28 year old Christiaan Basson who has the clubhouse lead with a very solid -8 64. He is a four-time Sunshine Tour winner and has a three-shot lead over Matt Ford, Mark Williams and Jeff Inglis

Kevin Kisner a winner..at last !

PGA Tour RSM Classic final leaderboard http://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/the-rsm-classic/leaderboard.html

For those of you who were asking this event, the last of the wrap around season on the PGA Tour was called the McGladery prior to the sponsors changing their name to RSM. It is a a licensed CPA firm, and serves clients around the world through RSM International, a global network of independent accounting, tax and consulting firms

For those of you who have been asking if Kevin Kisner, certainly one of the most consistent players in the game in 2015, would ever win the answer happily is "Yes !"

He lost in playoffs most recently in Shanghai at the WGC HSBC, but also earlier at Hilton Head, Sawgrass and the Greenbrier. However yesterday he capped of another great week's play, going one better for the win and for once it wasn't even close, after a masterful  -6 64, good by six shots over Kevin Chappell with a tournament record -22, incidently making him the 6th first time winner of this 2016 season.

Afterwards he stated the obvious "I’ve just been playing so well all year. I knew one day it was going to happen when I was going to make all the putts. I did it on the front nine" (he shot 30)

As for the race for 2nd place, Chappell shot 67 to grab that spot with last week's winner
Graeme McDowell closing with a 67 for 3rd.

There was a very nice story reported by Doug Ferguson of AP, one of our great writers, for one of golf's world travellers and nice guys, Sweden's Freddie Jacobson. Last year his young boy had to go through open-heart surgery and that's the reason we never saw Freddie for the last part of the year.

The tour gave him a major medical extension with a goal of earning over $326,000 to keep his card.

He shot 67 to finish 5th and that cheque for $228,00, makes his tally $356,000 good enough to secure his playing rights for 2016.

It was another solid week for David Hearn with scores of 64 72 67 69 T9 -10. Adam Svensson who Monday qualified and Austin Connelly both missed the cut.

Christmas came early at the Race to CME Globe finale..

LPGA Tour CME Group Tour Championship final leaderboard http://www.lpga.com/tournaments/cme-group-tour-championship/results

Christmas came early in Naples, Florida and like every good Christmas there was something nice for everyone under the tree.

From a local point of view Brooke Henderson capped off a very successful rookie year with a solid 72 70 71 66 -9 13th place finish while Alena Sharp finished off her best season  74 70 72 72 E T46.

However the main story we'd been talking about all week was the race between Lydia Ko and Inbee Park and would you know it they finished just a shot apart. Lydia T7  68 67 69 72 -11 and Inbee 6th, 71 69 67 69 -12.

That means Lydia wins the Race to CME Globe with the million dollar bonus again and the Player of the Year, while Inbee wins the Vare scoring average giving her the 27th point she needed to get into the LPGA Hall of Fame.

Meanwhile the Tour Championship winner with scores of 68 69 66 68 -17 was Christie Kerr edging out Gerina Piller and Ha Na Jang by a shot for her 18th tour win.

For the record, Lydia had wins this year (ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open, Swinging Skirts LPGA Classic, Canadian Pacific Women’s Open, The Evian Championship and Fubon LPGA Taiwan) giving her 10 for her career and making her the youngest player in golf history to reach 10 wins.

She was also awarded a Kia car for a tour best 12 additional top-10 finishes in her 24 tournaments.

Meanwhile Park clinched her second career scoring average title with a final round -3 69 and finished with a 69.41 scoring average for the year. Ko finished at 277, -11 one shot behind Park with a 69.44 final scoring average. It’s Park’s second Vare Trophy title and first since 2012 good enough to put her into the Hall of Fame after she completes her 10th year which will be next season.

Don't forget she also won two major championship victories with five wins overall, including her third straight KPMG Women’s PGA Championship and she completed the Career Grand Slam at the RICOH Women’s British Open. She also held the world #1 for a total of 24 weeks.

As for the winner Christie Kerr was the best all week and she finished in style  when she eagled the 17th hole to take a two-shot lead and made par at 18 to secure the one-shot victory over hard charging Gerina Piller who birdied five of her last six holes but it wasn’t enough.

Still like I said there was something for everyone under the tree and Gerina finished her best season on Tour, 18th on the money list.

Christie is 38 years young now, still in her prime and consider these. She owns 3 homes in Florida, Scottsdale and New York City, is #3 in the world and with the $500,000 first-place check, she passes the $17m mark in career earnings and to pay the  bills she remains 3rd on the LPGA Career Money List with $17,285,587, and her numbers for this year are, 25 events played, 22 cuts made, $1,294,301, 2 victories, 6 additional top-10s...

Like I said,Christmas came early in Naples, and a lot of little ladies went home very happy with Santa..again..

Ko in the drivers seat for the Race to the CME Globe

LPGA Tour CME Group Tour Championship leaderboard http://www.lpga.com/tournaments/cme-group-tour-championship/leaderboard

Only 18 holes separate Lydia Ko from holding every season-ending award the LPGA has to offer. Ko leads the Race to the CME Globe, Player of the Year, Vare Trophy and money list title races, and only trails co-leaders Cristie Kerr and Ha Na Jang by two shots in her bid to defend her title at the CME Group Tour Championship.

Kerr (66) and Jang (69) hold the 54-hole lead at -13, but Ko shot 69 on Saturday to get to -11 and remember she made history last year winning the biggest single payday in women’s golf history when she came from three shots back on Sunday to sweep both the inaugural Race to the CME Globe and the CME Group Tour Championship with a -4 68 on Sunday, so she's come from behind to  win before.

Ko leads Inbee Park who got back into the tournament with a 67 on Saturday, by three points in the Rolex Player of the Year standings and needed to beat Park by two shots this week to overtake her in the Vare Trophy standings. She’s currently up two shots on Park who sits at -9 and will win the money list title as long as Park doesn’t win today.

McIlroy finishes off the Race to Dubai double in style

European Tour DP World Tour Championship final leaderboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2015/tournamentid=2015090/leaderboard/index.html#z6hvxXUliks6PXIj.97

Andy Sullivan backed by his smiley faced family and friends were magnificent and they pushed Rory McIlroy all the way to the 72nd hole where he narrowly missed a birdie putt to tie or force a playoff, leaving Rory with 2  putts, which he used to win the DP World Tour Championship and the Race to Dubai.

There were many turning points in what turned out to be match play between the two, but I thought the 17th was it for me. Standing on the par 3 tee with a 2 shot lead, Rory made one of a very few bad swings of the day, 40 yards off line into the water, and after taking his penalty and drop, he had a twenty five footer for bogey which he promptly holed, taking a one shot lead up the last.

For the record he really got going when he made four birdies in five holes from the 11th and ended up with a 66 that left him at -21 and one shot clear of Sullivan who on any other day would have been the champion. To give you an example of what he was up against, on the 16th he drove the ball 320 yards, and found himself 45 yards behind Rory who was back to driving at his best. He did have one honour on the day as he was the last player announced by long-time European Tour starter Ivor Robson, who is retiring after 40 years in the role this week.

Danny Willett bogeyed two of his last three holes to drop to -13 T4, while Branden Grace closed with a 67 securing third at -15.

Rookies Byeong-hun An 71,and Matthew Fitzpatrick 70, were both at -13 under with Emiliano Grillo 71, Francesco Molinari 68, and Charl Schwartzel 69.

Rory moves to 4,727,253 points in The Race to Dubai and is officially European Tour Number One for a third time after 2012, 2014 and now 2015, and he remains #3 in the world behind Jason Day and Jordan Spieth who is down in Australia to defend his Aussie Open championship.

By the way my old colleague and sometimes boss from TSN and Sportsnet, Keith Pelley was almost giddy in the midst of it all today, saying all the right things as the newly appointed CEO of the European Tour. His main man Rory won it all, and will fly home to Florida proudly waving the European Tour flag if there is such a thing.

Now our attention in the men's game shifts next week to the Australian Open with Jordan Spieth defending while the European Tour's 2016 season begins in South Africa with the Alfred Dunhill.

Confident McIlroy in charge at DP World Tour Championship

European Tour DP World Tour Championship leaderboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2015/tournamentid=2015090/leaderboard/index.html#to54YTljL4aRBG80.97

At the beginning of the week I was speculating along with yourselves about the various permutations that were possible amongst the seven players who had a shot at winning this Race to Dubai, however after today's play there is really only one...Rory McIlroy..

Thursday he didn't have his A game, was errant with his driver, sloppy with a few irons and wasn't hot with his putter, but he still managed  -4 68, a score he matched on Friday although you could see the rust was shaking off, his body language was good as was his balance, his game badly in need of competitive reps was getting better.

Today he was the Rory we've all come to know. Quietly confident, ripping huge accurate drives with that 15 foot draw, all in perfect balance, solid iron play and most importantly putting well, both lags and the shorties that turn a 69 into a -7 65 which is what he has posted today although he did miss a 4 footer for birdie on the last. He is at -15, currently a shot behind little Andy Sullivan.

Sullivan continues to delight all his travelling supporters, he is putting like a magician, has just holed another long birdie putt on 17 to get into the lead at -16.

Byeong Hun An vying for the title and the rookie of the year award shot 66 to get to -12, while his main competitor Matthew Fitzpatrick shot 68 for a -11 total.

Danny Willett is now the only one who can beat Rory for the title was buoyed by an eagle 2 at the driveable 15th and a closing birdie shot 67 to also get to -11 to make it interesting should Rory slip up on Sunday but he is spotting him 4 shots.

Patrick Reed is at -12 playing 18 and Thongchai Jaidee 69 is -11.

So with 17 world wide wins, 4 majors and twice the winner of the Race to Dubai the stage is set for Rory tomorrow, he may not win the tournament, but I can't see him losing the Race...

Sullivan tops the low scoring in sunny Dubai

European Tour DP World Tour Championship leaderboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2015/tournamentid=2015090/leaderboard/index.html#1mTLQu9OaTPchd27.97

It was another day of endless blue sky in Dubai UAE, little wind, ideal conditions and as a result the scoring was really low, in fact there were 14 players within 3 shots of each other late in round 2, setting up a real shootout in the desert for the weekend at this DP World Tour Championship, the finale of the Race to Dubai.

With a hole left to play it was the red hot little Argentinian Emiliano Grillo who was the clubhouse leader after he followed his opening 69 with a brilliant -8 64 to get to -11. Grillo if you have been following, won the Fry's.Com on the PGA Tour just weeks ago, and he has brought that form with him to Dubai.

However just a minute ago, the diminutive Englishman, Andy Sullivan backed by his father, friends and family all wearing tee shirts with a smiley face sunk a long curling birdie putt on the 18th to post another -6 66 to take the outright lead, and set the 36 hole scoring record at -12

Patrick Reed who is making the most of his trip to Asia and the middle east shot 65 to sit at -9, and Charl Schwartzel also had 65 to lead the pack at -8, which includes in form Thongchai Jaidee 67, and Rory McIlroy who still leads the Race to Dubai after a 68.

Justin Rose stays in touch with Rory for the Race, after a 66 gets him to -7 while Brandon Grace is also at -7 after a 69. Martin Kaymer is at 71 -7 as well, then it's Byeong Hun An 68 at -6 as is Danny Willet who slipped  to a 70 and the final member of the seven who can win it all, Shane Lowery is well back at +1 75 70.

DP World Tour Championship: There is a four way tie in stunning Dubai...

European Tour DP World Tour Championship leaderboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2015/tournamentid=2015090/leaderboard/index.html#bpidzGo2KCUdfMBl.97

It was another cloudless day in the desert surrounding the stunning city of Dubai, ideal scoring conditions for the finale of the Race to Dubai.

Four players are tied for the lead at -6 66. Aussie Marcus Fraser, Englishmen Ian Poulter and Andy Sullivan along the Germany's Martin Kaymer and none of them are amongst the seven who have a chance to win the whole thing.

Of the seven Branden Grace, Rory McIlroy and Danny Willett had the best score -4 68, Byeong Hun An -2 70, Justin Rose -1 71, Louis Oosthuizen +1 73 and Shane Lowry +3 75

Rory did not have his 'A" game, drove inconsistently, had some sloppy irons but finished in style by holing out from the bunker at 18. Willett  his playing partner also birdied the 18th. Justin Rose will be disappointed with a bogey, bogey finish.

Of note the guy who has won twice here, Henrik Stenson is dead last in this 60 man field at +5 77 and I won't be surprised if he withdraws due to injury.

As for the four leaders at -6, Andy Sullivan who has a load of friends and family here, has had a career year with three wins so far, Poulter had dropped out of the world top 50 resulting in his well documented last minute rush to the Hong Kong Open to ensure he would keep his European Tour Membership.

Meanwhile Martin Kaymer who you'll remember won the Race to Dubai back in 2010 when he was world #1, is without a win since last year's US Open while Marcus Fraser who has only missed 4 cuts this season is just happy to be healthy after missing most of last year due to a hand injury

I have never been to Dubai or the Middle East for that matter but in all my years have been watching the city and the game of golf grow at an alarming rate. Nowhere in the world do they put up sky scrapers faster than Dubai and with the oil supplies running out it has become a must visit tourist attraction, some 20 million visitors a year expected, within the next 5 years.

A report published by Deloitte yesterday has revealed that the direct and indirect economic impact of golf in Dubai is a staggering $131m per annum.

The comprehensive study also reveals the total gross expenditure on golf in the emirate is $270m, a quarter of total sports expenditure, while the estimated economic impact of golf tourism in Dubai is $38m – proving that golf can be considered as a major growth catalyst for Dubai’s sports industry as a whole.

Pelley's at it again..this time on the European Tour..

It hasn't taken Keith Pelley long to make his mark as the CEO of the European Tour.. then again if you know Keith Pelley like I do that comes as no surprise.

I first met Keith in 1989 when I broke into the broadcasting business as a reporter and assistant editor at TSN when they were located down on Leslie Street in Toronto, just in behind Global News.

He was the producer for the 11pm Sportsdesk that featured originals like John Wells, young Micheal Landsberg, Jim Van Horne, Vic Rauter and young reporters like Rod Smith, and Gino Reda with his moustache.

Keith was and is a very energetic little red head, with a knack of getting people on his side. Through his development from a humble assistant editor at TSN up through the ranks to become President he has clearly grown to master the business of sports on TV.

He always seems to be up for a challenge and that's why he became president of the Argos in 2003 where they won Grey Cup during his tenure and when the next challenge appeared in the form of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver he left the Argonauts in 2007 to become the president of Canada’s Olympic broadcast media consortium.

Soon after the wildly successful Olympics, Rogers Communcations were in turmoil after the passing of Ted Rogers and the president of Rogers Media where I was employed, Tony Viner decided it was the right time to retire, and word soon came out that Keith was to replace Tony to work with the new committee running the company in September of 2010 and he promptly put the boots to his old company TSN, as he dragged Sportsnet out of the perennial runners-up position to the top sports dog in the city, with the icing on the cake being the $5.232 billion contract with the NHL he spearheaded  to have the national rights to broadcast games in Canada for twelve years.

Now he's at it again with the European Tour as he announced from Dubai yesterday more news on the re-structuring he has undertaken to make it a "players first" tour.

At this particular time, if you are a young player, and you have done very well in the European Tour, and you want to make the most money, you are going to go play in America,” he said.
“You will ask: ‘How are you actually going to have our people play more often here in Europe’? The answer is very simple. We need to provide a viable alternative to the PGA Tour for our elite, medium and low-ranked players. End of story.”

He is reducing the number of tournaments needed for players to maintain their membership from 13, to 5 and stated that the five tournaments will exclude the four majors and the four World Golf Championships which all his members in the world top 50 play in anyways.

The mandatory 13 starts was becoming difficult to achieve for players who had fallen outside the top-50 of the world ranking and lived in the States thus making them ineligible for some of the majors and WGC events. So guys like Luke Donald and Ian Poulter can now clearly schedule their years without rushing at the last minute like Poulter did this year to get to Hong Kong overnight to get in his 13 appearances to retain his membership.

Working closely with the players, Pelley has already ingratiated himself, and earlier introduced major changes to the schedule including the Race to Dubai playoffs which will now have 3 events instead of 4, the Turkish Airlines remain November 3- 6, the new $7m Nedbank Golf Challenge from Sun City November 10-13, now a 72 hole event with 3 years guaranteed, then the finale $8m DP World Tour Championship from Dubai. That's $22 million for his players to compete for, not to mention the $10m bonus.

The WGC HSBC Champions in Shanghai will now be part of the regular season and remember 2016 is a very crowded year with the Olympics in Rio smack in the middle of August and the Ryder Cup at Hazeltine National in September.

Also included in the Race to Dubai are the Australian PGA in early December, the Maybank Challenge from Malaysia in February, adding more incentive for the players to travel. Next years schedule has grown to 45 tournaments in 26 countries.

As Pelley points out 20 events are on European soil but as the game has grown world wide he knows his relationship with the Asian Tour, the Sunshine Tour and the Australian PGA are crucial to truly reflect what he calls their "global footprint"

The little guy from Etobicoke with the big vision has succeeded every where else he has landed and I have no doubt he is well on his way already to making the European Tour the place to play just like he did at Sportsnet and don't forget from a personal standpoint, he and his family are very comfortable in a very wealthy part of England and he has the keys in his hand to play every historic course in the world... not bad for a kid that used to have to play the little par 3 public course at Centennial Park..

McDowell answers his doubts with a playoff win in Mexico

PGA Tour OHL Classic final scoreboard http://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/ohl-classic-at-mayakoba/leaderboard.html

One of the timeless quotes in this game " the toughest course in golf is the one between your ears" was on full display in the post round press conference in Mayakoba, Mexico after Graeme McDowell birdied the 1st playoff hole with a superb 5 iron from 220 yards over the water to within 4 feet for a 3 to beat Jason Bohn and Russell Knox for his first win world wide since the French Open in 2013.

"I've been asking myself all the questions, am I good enough to be out here, do I want to get back into the grind, do I still have it ?"

This is from a guy who won the 2010 US Open and is considered by his peers to be one of the leaders of the Ryder Cup team, the backbone, the glue...how easily self doubt creeps in, how fine a line it is between being one of golf's best, and just one of the guys making up the numbers.

Consider this, McDowell is in the final year of his PGA Tour exemption and had not finished in the top 10 since the Dubai Desert Classic at the beginning of the season. He was down to 85th in the world after a new marriage found him wanting to stay home spending time with his wife and daughter Vale. He didn't qualify for the Fed Ex Cup and decided to skip the playoffs for the Race to Dubai since he was so far behind.

It’s been a rough year for all the right reasons,” he said. “I’ve been enjoying life off the golf course with my beautiful family. Golf hasn’t been the priority it should be. But the last three or four months I got back to where I want to be.”

If you didn't see it, he made a clutch 8 footer for par on his 72nd for a -5 66 to finish at -18, 266 but the drama wasn't over as Russell Knox looking for his 2nd straight win came up his last hole with a one shot lead but he yanked his tee shot into a fairway bunker with a big lip, came out short and eventually missed his par putt for a 66 while Jason Bohn was grinding hard with some gutsy par saving putts for a 68 to join the playoff.

So his decision to wipe the board clean and get 2016 off to a fresh start in Mexico has put him right back on track, he will now be in the Masters next spring, as well as the PGA Championship and The Players.

It has also stopped the trend of 20 something winners so far this year. Emiliano Grillo, Smylie Kaufman, Justin Thomas, Peter Malnati, all graduates of the Web.com tour have been the story of this wrap around season so far.

David Hearn finished T74, 68 70 75 72 +1.

This week the LPGA Tour is in Naples, Florida to wrap up their season, with Lydia Ko and Inbee Park neck and neck, and the European Tour's best are in the desert at Dubai for their finale with Rory McIlroy holding the top spot, but has at least 5 guys, all in form with a chance to win the Race to Dubai.

Another Monday finish.. Races to be run....

PGA Tour OHL Classic leaderboard http://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/ohl-classic-at-mayakoba.html

The stages are set on the European Tour for the Race to Dubai finale and on the LPGA Tour's Race to the CME Globe finale this week in Naples Florida. More on those in a minute..

PGA Tour
First for the second week in a row there is a Monday finish. Last week at the WGC- HSBC in Shanghai Russell Knox won his first European Tour event got on a plane and flew to Mexico where after more rain then finally darkness stopped the final round of the OHL Classic he finds himself tied for the lead again, this time with Graeme McDowell at -19, McDowell is thru 13, Knox thru 12 as the field is scheduled to tee off at 8am this morning

The wind is blowing in Mayakoba and there are plenty of black clouds about so it may be a long day.

Race to CME Globe http://www.lpga.com/tournaments/lorena-ochoa-invitational-presented-by-banamex/results

Going into this weekend's play at the Lorena Ochoa Invitational in Mexico, Lydia Ko with her five wins as well as 11 other top-10 finishes, has climbed to the No.1 ranking in the world and earned 4,913 points in the season long Race to the CME Globe. In doing so, she locked up the No.1 position ahead of this week's finale in Naples, the CME Group Tour Championship.

However the plot thickened as to who will win the Race and indeed who is the world #1 after Inbee Park fired an -8 64 on Sunday at the Lorena Ochoa Invitational, to hold off playing partner Carlota Ciganda to win her fifth title of the year which includes 2 majors to Lydia's 1.

These two women, Lydia now 18 and Park 27 are so close in all categories, and even closer after Park’s -18 270 has pushed her ahead of Lydia in the Vare Trophy standings by just 0.0161 shots per round. Park’s victory also puts the Rolex Player of the Year trophy firmly up for grabs next week as she has pulled within just three points of Ko. Park will need a minimum of an eighth-place finish to tie Ko in the player of the year standings if Ko doesn’t manage a top-10.

Race to Dubai

Rory McIlroy has kind of been the forgotten man this year after he tore up his ankle in the summer, but remember this is a year long race, not a short sprint and McIlroy has held the top spot since April 12, after he finished fourth at the Masters Tournament, and then pulled clear of the chasing pack with victory in the WGC-Cadillac Match Play a month later.

In his absence Willett who is having a career year closed the gap with a top six finish in The Open Championship at St Andrews and his second victory of 2015 in the Omega European Masters a week later then got even closer with a share of third place in Italy before an impressive closing 62 in last week’s WGC-HSBC Champions. He is now just over 1600 points behind Rory, but to me, seems to have run out of gas, while Rory who always plays well in the desert is fresh following his very restricted schedule.

So this week it is the finale at Greg Norman's Earth Course in Dubai, with several players besides Rory and Danny vying for the title. Justin Rose, Shane Lowry, Louis Oosthuizen and Branden Grace are all set to start play knowing that a victory could secure the Race to Dubai crown, and don't overlook the brilliant young South Korean, Byeong Hun An who also has an outside chance following his T3 finish in Shanghai

Fathauer leads experienced pack by a shot in Mexico

PGA Tour OHL Classic leaderboard http://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/ohl-classic-at-mayakoba/leaderboard.html

AP....Derek Fathauer played bogey-free Saturday on his way to another 6-under 66 that gave him a one-shot lead in the OHL Classic at Mayakoba and a chance to extend an unusual streak on the PGA Tour.

First-time winners have captured all five of the PGA Tour events at the start of the wraparound season.

Fathauer would love to make it six in a row.“I’ve just got to have fun, play golf, play my game, and whatever happens will happen,” he said.

Fathauer was at 16-under 197 and led by one shot over Jason Bohn, who missed a 5-foot par putt on the final hole at El Camaleon Golf Club. Bohn took the lead on the par-5 13th hole with a 25-foot eagle putt right before the third round was halted for nearly 90 minutes because of storms in the area. Bohn had to scramble for pars late in his round and couldn’t save the last one. He shot a 65. Bohn led for 3 rounds here last year.

Russell Knox, coming off his first win last week in Shanghai at the HSBC Champions, also made bogey on the last hole for a 65. He was at 13-under 200, along with Justin Leonard (67), Graeme McDowell (70) and PGA Tour rookie Harold Varner III, who made an 18-foot par putt on the last hole for a 68.

The field is playing preferred lies this week due to the heavy rain that fell earlier in the week.

Kristoffer Broberg beats Patrick Reed to win BMW Masters in Shanghai

European Tour BMW Masters final scoreboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2015/tournamentid=2015084/leaderboard/index.html#x3J0givlBfkPUMhT.97

Coming down the stretch this one was a real cavalry charge, with 15 players within 3 shots of the lead and not surprisingly it took a playoff to decide the winner.

In the end it was another good young Swedish player, Kristoffer Broberg (68) who grabbed his first European Tour title at this BMW Masters on the first playoff hole with a solid birdie putt to beat hard charging Patrick Reed.

Broberg shot 33 on the front nine to get a share of the lead but stalled on the back with just one more for a -17 total. The rest of the chasing pack all had their moments but it was Patrick Reed (66)who charged into contention with four shots in four holes and I thought he'd won it when he holed out from a fairway bunker for eagle on the 15th to get to -18 but he missed a little 4 footer for par on 17 and they both parred the last hole forcing the playoff which Broberg won when he confidently nailed a 15-foot putt down the hill.

It was a dramatic afternoon in Shanghai right down to the final pair where Thongchai Jaidee (71) had a putt on the last to force his way into the play-off, as did rookie Byeong-hun An (70), but they both just missed and had to settle for a share of third at -16 with hard luck Lucas Bjerregaard (70) and Henrik Stenson (68) who birdied the 11th, 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th to move into the race but couldn't make another to fall just short.

Paul Casey (69) was right there but his chances disappeared in the water on the 18th while Sergio Garcia (73) eagled the 13th but then dropped three shots in his final two holes including two in the water at 18.

Justin Rose (67) had another great week and T7 with Julien Quesne (66) and Søren Kjeldsen, who shot a low round of the day 64, at 14 under.

Going into the season finale in Dubai Rory McIlroy is still the clear leader as Danny Willett finished T28th closing the gap to 1,613 points.

McDowell skips Race to Dubai, leads OHL Classic in Mexico

PGA Tour OHL Classic leaderboard http://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/ohl-classic-at-mayakoba/leaderboard.html

Graeme McDowell is usually in the thick of things in Shanghai and the middle east with all his European Tour mates at this time of year, but the 36-year-old has had such a poor year that he chose to start the new PGA Tour season in Mayakoba Mexico and yesterday he found some of his old form when he made seven birdies in an eight-hole stretch for -8 63 to take a one-shot lead in the OHL Classic at -12

Following the birth of his daughter Vale to second wife Kristin Stape he wrote "There's a switch inside me that's flicked and I know things have changed forever," and it is no secret that it took almost a year for him to make up his mind to re dedicate himself to the game, and get back to the grind that is pro golf. Remember he won the US Open in 2010 and was ranked as high as 4th in March of 2011.

Derek Fathauer finished strong with 4 birdies for a 66 -11 to get within one shot of McDowell. Only 2 Canadians in the field, David Hearn shot 70, T27 -4 while Adam Hadwin (72-75) + 4 was not good enough to make the cut.

Jaidee leads crowded leaderboard after 3 rounds at BMW Masters

European Tour BMW Masters leaderboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2015/tournamentid=2015084/leaderboard/index.html#BPvrmTZ19wd8dWTi.97

Round 3 is already in the books at the BMW Masters and there are 12 players within the lead held by the little Thai veteran Thongchai Jaidee who shot -6 66 to go with 67 68 for a -15 total in a hazy warmer day Shanghai where the scoring was low.

However some big names are hard on his heels including Ian Poulter 68, Paul Casey 68 Patrick Reed 64 and Henrik Stenson 65 all at -12. Sergio Garcia 67 is at -14 along with Lucas Bjerregaard 70 and Byeong Hun An 66. The low score of the day went to Thomas Pieters who went out in 31 ending up with a sparkling 63 -11. In form Ross Fisher aided by a holed chip on the 17th for a 67 is at -12

As for the reason they are all here, the Race to Dubai, remember Rory is off this week and the guy who's been chasing him all year Danny Willett(70) is at -5 and Justin Rose is at -10

If Jaidee can win a second European Tour win of the season he could move up to 3rd in the race.

Veteran caddies to join broadcast team...

When Tiger Woods' then caddy Stevie Williams was allowed to be part of the broadcast team back in 2008 at the Kiwi Challenge I thought it was a great idea to get his unique insight so it was no surprise when the news which has been brewing ever since came out yesterday that Jim “Bones” Mackay and John Wood who caddy for Phil Mickelson and Matt Kuchar will be part of the broadcast team next week during the RSM Classic at Sea Island in Georgia as they will be on-course reporters for key groups during Friday and Saturday rounds

I'd prefer they were miked up while actually caddying, the tour has been experimenting with that and we all know the difference it has made for the TV curling audience, but this should be the next best thing.

As a producer I can tell you there are  lots of guys who are very good at what they do but it doesn't come across on radio or TV unless they are good communicators, good talkers, good story tellers and I'm sure that's why Tommy Roy, the golf producer for NBC Sports and Golf Channel has selected them.

Veteran player and on course broadcaster Roger Maltbie will be coaching them and they will have a dress rehearsal Thursday morning.

In form Dane, Lucas Bjerregaard opens a 3 shot lead at BMW Masters in Shanghai

European Tour BMW Masters leaderboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2015/tournamentid=2015084/leaderboard/index.html#vVmGeB8t7cG1LRcV.97

The wind picked up on the Lake Malaren course in Shanghai and as a result scores went up with it but it was the in form Dane Lucas Bjerregaard who posted a second consecutive 66 to open up a three shot lead (-12) over Thongchai Jaidee and Sergio Garcia at these BMW Masters.

His name is pronounced Ber-guard and you may remember 3 weeks ago in Hong Kong he finished just a stroke behind winner Justin Rose and in fact I mentioned yesterday he comes here with four top tens in his last seven events.

Bjerregaard played on the Challenge Tour in 2013, making 14 cuts in 18 events. He finished 34th in the Challenge Tour rankings. He then went to QQ School and finished T-17 to earn his European Tour card for 2014 where he made 17 cuts in 26 events, including three top-10 finishes. He finished 90th in the Race to Dubai rankings and retained his card for 2015

He is only 24 and with his fine play is 55th in The Race to Dubai, remember the top 60 after this week qualifying for next week's DP World Tour Championship, Dubai and is currently 178th in the world.

He was playing with Peter Uihlein who had seven consecutive birdies from the 15th, one short of the tour record, in his 66 to sit five shots behind him at -7. Meanwhile first round leader Sergio Garcia who opened with a 64, was playing well at -11 through 7, but was in the water at 13, lost 3 shots before a birdie on the 15th got him to within three of the lead with 71 for -9 T2 with Thongchai Jaidee who had a scrambling round of -4 68.

Ian Poulter 68 who is hoping that a change to his putting grip will help end his three year wait for a European Tour title, Buyong Hun An 71 and Paul Casey 69 are all T4 at -8 while Victor Dubuisson slipped to 73 and is in a group at -6.

Watch out for Henrik Stenson 68 71 -5 who has hit 34 of 36 greens in regulation this week and is on his way to being just the 4th player in tour history to hit 80% in that category over a season. The 18th hole is playing really tough at 4.46 with only 4 birdies all day but 36 bogey's and 6 doubles.

Sergio Garcia leads BMW Masters in rainy Shanghai

European Tour BMW Masters scoreboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2015/tournamentid=2015084/leaderboard/index.html#SF6QSuH4T2mxKjob.97

It was a cold damp rainy day in Shanghai, some 13 hours ahead of EST, but for the few spectators who could get off work Sergio Garcia in his 16th season brought some warmth that is El Nino, firing a brilliant -6 64 to lead this 3rd leg of the Race to Dubai playoffs, the BMW Masters.

Despite the fact that Rory, Rickie and Jordan have chosen not to play ( I wonder where they are?) there is a strong contingent of European stalwarts, Paul Casey and Justin Rose are -5, Victor Dubuisson is at -7, Henrik Stenson is -4 as is Ian Poulter. Martin Kaymer is in a group at -3.

These weeks are all about the Race to Dubai and with Rory elsewhere, second-placed Danny Willett sounded very unhappy with his E,72 however as he pointed out no matter what happens this week it will all come down to the finale in Dubai next week. Last year at this time Willett was outside the world's top 80, so whatever the outcome this week, when he looks back on it, he's had a career year.

Rose who won recently in Hong Kong, declared himself pleased with his -5 67 and he knows that a top-two finish would see him overtake Rory for the top spot in the standings

Sergio is 35 now, he started on the 10th and got off to a flying start, -4 after five holes and he added five birdies on his inward nine for his lowest score on tour this year.

Byeong-hun An the talented South Korean youngster who already has the BMW PGA Championsip on his resume and Victor Dubuisson are at -7. Dubuisson has his confidence back after his win in Turkey two weeks ago and An is in the race with Matthew Fitzpatrick and Anirban Lahiri for the rookie of the year award.

Other guys in form include Ross Fisher who T3 last week and lost this event in a playoff last year is at -6 T4 alongside Lucas Bjerregaard, who has 4 top 10's in his last seven outings.

Malnati surfaces the winner at rain soaked Sanderson Farms Championship

PGA Tour Sanderson Farms Championship final scoreboard http://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/sanderson-farms-championship/leaderboard.html

As I said yesterday, who knew who was going to win this weather ravaged Sanderson Farms Championship and in the end it was Peter Malnati who won for the first time on the PGA Tour, closing with a -5 67 -18. He was one shot behind going into Monday's final round but got hot with five birdies to beat William McGirt (68) and David Toms (69) by a shot.

Malnati is 28, born in Indiana and went to school at University of Missouri, regained his card this year after finishing 4th on the Web.com tour money list. His wife Alicia is his caddie. He is a Kansas City Royals fan and now lives in Knoxville.

Due to rain that swept through central Mississippi the championship was delayed five times, and as a result some of the field played 30 holes.

Roberto Castro led through the first two rounds but shot a +3 75 in the third round and finished at -16 and as for the Canadian contingent defending champion Nick Taylor T20 71 -11,  Adam Hadwin T28 69 -10  Graham Delaet T33 72 -9

It's a Monday finish at the weather plagued Sanderson Farms Championship

PGA Tour Sanderson Farms Championship leaderboard http://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/sanderson-farms-championship/leaderboard.html

God only knows who is going to win this rain drenched and delayed Sanderson Farms championship, but we do have a long day ahead with a myriad of storylines to unfold before the champion is crowned.

This week that has required a load of patience as rain flooded central Mississippi, with players in some cases taking 3 days to finish just one round. Play was suspended last night when darkness fell and the guys will be out early this morning to finish round 3 with the final round following immediately

For the record Roberto Castro has a one shot lead at -13 after playing just six holes of the third round. He will play 30 holes today as he tries to win for the first time on the PGA Tour in more than 100 career starts

D.J. Trahan and Michael Thompson are a shot back at -12. Boo Weekley, Patrick Rodgers and Jhonattan Vegas are in a group of seven players at -11, two shots behind Castro while Graham DeLaet  and Adam Hadwin are T22 at -8 and Nick Taylor starts today T29 at -7

It will be a marathon, but there is no rain in the forecast, so stay tuned to see who the best mudder in the field will be come dinner time tonight.

Andrade wins the championship but Langer wins the Cup...

Champions Tour Charles Schwab Cup Championship final leaderboard http://www.pgatour.com/champions/tournaments/charles-schwab-cup-championship/leaderboard.html

Charles Schwab Cup final standings http://www.pgatour.com/champions/stats/stat.193.html

Bernhard Langer continues to dominate the Champions Tour even though he narrowly lost the championship in a playoff to Billy Andrade to a birdie on the first hole.

Andrade two-putted the par-5 18th for his birdie while Langer couldn't get up and down from the greenside bunker. Andrade earned the win with a -6 64 on Desert Mountain’s Cochise Course and he got into the playoff by making a clutch 12 footer for birdie on the 18th to get to -14 while Bernhard lipped out an eagle on the same hole that would have given him the win. He shot 67.

Consider this though. He's 58 now, still the fittest guy on tour, he won the Charles Schwab Cup points title for the second straight year and record third time overall, earning a $1 million annuity eventually beating Colin Montgomerie and Jeff Maggert in the points race after entering the week third in the standings after he earned 508 points with his $254,000 to top Monty by 338 points and Maggert by 377.

He also won the money title for the record fourth straight year and record seventh time in eight years, finishing with $2,340,288 in part by successfully defending his Senior Players title in June for his fifth senior major title, he now has 25 wins on this tour.

Andrade banked $440,000, earlier in the year he teamed with Joe Durant to win the Legends of Golf in April and he also won the Boeing Classic in August. Micheal Allen ended up 3rd with a 70, -12 total.

Stephen Ames wrapped up a great week with a T6 after his 69 -9 total.

Ames T3 at Charles Schwab Cup finale, Allen leads, Langer poised to win 3rd Cup

Champions Tour Charles Schwab Cup Championship scoreboard http://www.pgatour.com/champions/tournaments/charles-schwab-cup-championship/leaderboard.html

Michael Allen held onto the lead Saturday in the Champions Tour's season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship, and playing partner Bernhard Langer pulled within a stroke to easily remain in position to take the points title.

Allen shot a 1-under 69, making six birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey in breezy conditions on Desert Mountain's Cochise Course. He had a 12-under 198 total

Langer birdied the final two holes for a 68. The 58-year-old German star is competing with Colin Montgomerie and Jeff Maggert for the Charles Schwab Cup points title and a $1 million annuity.
Langer began the week third in the standings, 66 points behind Colin Montgomerie and 27 behind Jeff Maggert, in a bid to win the title for the second straight year and record third time overall.

With players receiving a point for every $500 earned in the $2.5 million tournament, Langer started $33,000 behind Montgomerie and $13,500 behind Maggert. With their current positions, Langer would earn $254,000, Montgomerie $40,500, and Maggert $34,000. Langer also is in position to top the money list.

Montgomerie had a 71 and was tied for 18th in the 30-man field at 1 under. Maggert was tied for 21st at even par after a 71. The runner-up in the points competition will receive a $500,000 annuity, and the third-place finisher will get a $300,000 annuity.

Mark O'Meara, Stephen Ames and Billy Andrade were tied for third at 8 under. O'Meara shot 66, Ames 67, and Andrade 70. Ames was the last player to get into the field, jumping from 31st to 30th on the money list with a ninth-place tie last week at Newport Beach

Rain washed out play on Saturday at Sanderson Farms

PGA Tour Sanderson Farms Championship leaderboard http://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/sanderson-farms-championship/leaderboard.html

Central Mississippi experienced a severe drought in the summer, with less than 2 inches of rain falling from July 4 through late October. But over the last two weeks, nearly 15 inches have fallen, including 3.1 inches Friday night alone at the Country Club of Jackson.

Play was postponed until 10:30 a.m. Saturday to give the grounds crew time to get the course in playing shape, but it started raining again around 11 a.m., play was suspended again at 11:10 a.m., and the rain continued to fall throughout the day.

The forecast calls for no rain on Sunday or Monday. With 76 players in the 132-player field yet to complete Round 2, and TOUR officials set on a 72-hole event, a Monday finish is almost assured.

Only three holes were played over 40 minutes on Saturday before play was suspended, with 76 players yet to complete the second round. Play is set to resume at 7 a.m. CT this morning. After the second round is complete, the field will be cut to the low 70 scores, plus ties, and then the third round will begin.

When they do begin I remind you that Roberto Castro shot a -5 67 on Friday to take a four-stroke lead over Bryce Molder, Jhonattan Vegas and D.J. Trahan who are T2 at -11. Molder shot a 69, while Vegas and Trahan had two holes remaining when play was suspended for the day.

Defending champion and Nick Taylor is T8  -9 under after his opening 36 holes. Adam Hadwin hasn't played since Thursday night and is T17 at -7

Scotland's Russell Knox is the WGC-HSBC Champion

European Tour WGC-HSBC Champions final scoreboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2015/tournamentid=2015086/leaderboard/index.html#vjYOBqBLpj5aOG5X.97

His father was born in San Diego but moved with parents to Scotland when he was 21, married a Scot and along came Russell Knox born in Inverness and his sister Diane Campbell, who goes by Knoxy, is a well-known radio DJ in Glasgow on Clyde.

He moved to Jacksonville, Florida, his adopted home and went to university there and this morning Russell Knox claimed his first professional and first European Tour title in his first appearance at a WGC event.

He came into the final round in a share of the lead, but a closing -4 68 around a damp Sheshan International Golf Club got him to - 20 under for a two shot victory over Kevin Kisner the bridesmaid again.

Danny Willett surged up the leaderboard into a share of third in stunning fashion early in the day, posting ten birdies in an unblemished -10 62 which proved to be the round of the week and moved him closer to Race to Dubai leader Rory McIlroy.

Knox becomes the first Scotsman to win a WGC event and he held his nerve on the back nine, opening a two shot lead with birdies on the tenth and 11th before he sealed the deal with a sixth birdie of the day on the 16th

"Winning any level is the hardest thing you can do, and especially because I've never won a big one like this. It was tough but I just kept holing putts, and golf is so much easier when that happens."

For Kisner, it was another second-place finish, remarkably he has been beaten in three play-offs on the PGA Tour in 2015.

Ross Fisher was alongside Willett at -17 after a closing 68 with Branden Grace (68) and Dustin Johnson (71) a further shot back.

Matthew Fitzpatrick (67), local favourite Li Haotong (72), Patrick Reed (70) and Jordan Spieth (70) were all at -15, with McIlroy (66) in the group of six players at -14. Spieth returns to world #1

Race to Dubai : Danny Willett now moves onto next week's BMW Masters with just a 74,214 point deficit to make up on McIlroy, who birdied his last hole to finish in a share of 11th place on -14

With McIlroy not returning to action until the season-ending DP World Tour Championship, Dubai, a top 25 finish for Willett at Lake Malaren Golf Club would see him usurp the Northern Irishman at the top of The Race to Dubai Rankings.

Speith shoots into contention with 63 at WGC-HSBC Champions

European Tour WGC-HSBC Champions leaderboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2015/tournamentid=2015086/leaderboard/index.html#vRbHdHfQvpu1GYgO.97

While 30 year old journeyman Kevin Kisner completed a third round -2 70 -16 to remain in the lead by a shot at these WGC - HSBC Champions, it was the guys right behind him led by Jordan Spieth who grabbed the headlines.

Local favourite Li Haotong and Dustin Johnson are both just a shot back at -15 as is Russell Knox who will return to play 1 hole on Sunday. Play had been delayed in the morning for 30 minutes due to the weather, followed by another 45 minute delay soon after.

The star of the day was the man who grabbed all the hardware this year, Jordan Spieth who made nine birdies, out in 32 back in a sizzling 31 for 63 to get to within three shots of the lead at -13. He started the day 10 shots behind.

He credited his ball striking with only one missed green as the key to the round, then gave us an insight into his mind set after two weeks away from the game.

"This will be the first and only time I would say this, but I was not expecting myself to be in this position come Sunday when the week started. I came in with very little confidence in my trust of what I'm trying to do in my swing"

Johnson you will remember was out of golf at this time last year for personal reasons, but he won this in 2013 and along with Li Haotong who started with 4 birdies on his way to a 66, start play 2 shots ahead of Spieth and they are all taking dead aim at Kisner.

Don't forget Ross Fisher shot a 65 to tie Spieth at -13 with Patrick Reed in the group as well after a 68.

Other contenders include Thorbjørn Olesen in a pack at -12 with a 66 while Aussie Scott Hend had a single bogey in his 67 and Branden Grace made an eagle on the par four 16th and birdied the last hole to join them.

Byeong-hun An eagled the 16th and 18th to get to -11 under with Austrian giant Bernd Wiesberger while Matthew Fitzpatrick, Sergio Garcia, Thongchai Jaidee and Marc Leishman are all at -10.  Rory McIlroy shot 68 -8 and seems out of contention eight shots off the lead.

Round 2 resumed after a 5 hour rain delay on Friday on a soaked Country Club of Jackson with the field playing preferred lies and Adam Hadwin who had 9 birdies including his first 3 holes of the day on Thursday for his -7,65 didn't get to play at all, and when he does at 7.32am this morning (local) he will start T17.

Playing lift clean and place due to the soft conditions caused by  heavy rain earlier in the week some 9 inches in 2 days, Robert Castro who hasn't won in over 100 starts, remains the story after he shot a -10 62, his lowest score on the PGA Tour, to take a two-shot lead over Aaron Baddeley and Bryce Molder on Thursday he added a -5 67 on Friday to take a four-stroke lead at -15 over Bryce Molder (69), Jhonattan Vegas and D.J. Trahan who are T2 at -11. Vegas and Trahan had two holes remaining when play was suspended for the day.

Kisner battles bad back to lead after 2 rounds at the WGC-HSBC Champions

WGC-HSBC Champions leaderboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2015/tournamentid=2015086/leaderboard/index.html#BLUhzBcbZjuDU342.97

The benign conditions on Thursday gave way to the wind today and scoring rose as a result, however 31 year old Kevin Kisner playing with a sore back got off to a great start then finished strong for a -6 66 added to his opening 64 to move to the top of the leaderboard at -14 under, two shots better than Scotland's Russell Knox who had the round of the day at -7 65.

The pair shared the lead for much of the day but birdies on 16 and 18 edged Kisner ahead. Kisner had gone out in -4 32 and is the only player in this elite field with no bogey's.

There were only 6 rounds over par on Thursday, 29 today, 144 bogey's Thursday but 204 today with the scoring average up 2 shots from 70 to 72.

First round leader Branden Grace followed his opening 63 with a -1 71 and is at -10. Rory McIlroy had a mixed day with four birdies and four bogeys, narrowly missing a hole in one with a 5 iron on the 225 yard par 3 12th, on his way to E 72 in a group at -4 which includes Canadian Richard T Lee and Jordan Spieth (72). Spieth's caddie Micheal Greller was named the tour's top caddie and wore a special "caddy of the year" bib.

Three consecutive birdies from the 14th helped Bernd Wiesberger to a 66 and eight under alongside Dustin Johnson who had a quiet day until making birdies on the last 3 holes and Hunter Mahan who had a great back nine with birdies on the tenth and 11th and an eagle on the 16th for a -4 68

Rookie of the Year favourite Matthew Fitzpatrick (69) picked up four shots in his last five holes to sit at -7 with Louis Oosthuizen who also shot 69.

Grace shoots 63 to top low scores at WGC-HSBC Championship

WGC-HSBC Championship leaderboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2015/tournamentid=2015086/leaderboard/index.html#Gz52jJPrc2Rtg8IU.97

A star-studded field from 22 different countries has arrived at Sheshan International Golf Club, all looking to score valuable points in The Race to Dubai

Branden Grace fired a rock solid -9, 63 to open up a one shot lead on this opening day. Already a two-time winner on The European Tour this season, he is in a good position to move up from his current spot of sixth as he finished the first round five shots clear of an ailing Race to Dubai leader Rory McIlroy.

Norway's Thorbjørn Olesen who birdied 5 of his first 6 holes, Aussie Steven Bowditch and American Kevin Kisner are all a shot behind the South African after -8 64's with 15 players within four shots of the lead. on a dull overcast day in Shanghai where 41 players posted scores in the 60's.

Grace is currently 1,110,197 points behind McIlroy in the battle to be Europe's number one but with big prizes on offer in The Final Series, the 27 year old will be looking to overtake the Northern Irishman.

In form Englishman Danny Willett has been in the top two all year, trails McIlroy by 399,385 points and continued his fine play with -7 65 to sit just two shots off the lead alongside Dustin Johnson who has been amazing the crowd and commentators with his extraordinary power, and Patrick Reed.

Jordan Spieth coming off a 14 day holiday, lost his ball on the 17th and a pale sickly looking McIlroy are at -4, 68 as are defending champion Bubba Watson who turned 37 today and led the field with a 322 yard driving average, Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year award contender Matthew Fitzpatrick and Louis Oosthuizen.

Grace summed up the day in his post round interview "Barely had a breath of wind out there and the golf course is playing probably as easy as it could be playing. There's some low scores out there. The guys are playing some great golf, and when you play on greens like this as well it helps. You just have to get the ball on the right line and it goes in."

Taylor set to defend his Sanderson Farms Championship

PGA Tour Sanderson Farms Championship leaderboard http://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/sanderson-farms-championship/tee-times.html

Ok all the big names are in Shanghai, or Australia or on holiday somewhere, but like other events that are played the same week as a major, this Sanderson Farms Championship counts as a full blown win on the PGA Tour, just ask our own Nick Taylor.

Last year he had just secured his PGA Tour card from the Web.com playoffs when he got hot here on Sunday shooting 66 to roar up the leaderboard from 4 shots behind for his first PGA Tour title in just his seventh outing. With it came a two year exemption, he finished the year 101st on the money list, but more importantly it gave him some breathing room, a chance to get to know the circuit, meet all the tournament organizers, make some new friends, and feel like he belongs.

Like all the guys on Tour he has had a storied amateur career, in fact you'll remember he was the world's #1 back in 2009. turning pro in 2010 and he has been learning the ropes ever since, slowly but surely climbing the ladder that is professional golf.

He's 27 now, calls Abbotsford in BC home and he's joined by Graham Delaet and Adam Hadwin in the field as he sets out to defend his championship, this time more relaxed, more comfortable, more confident.

It all begins for Taylor on the first tee with Smylie Kaufman at 1146am in Jackson, MS tomorrow morning.

McIlroy has nasty case of food poisoning

European Tour WGC- HSBC Championship leaderboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2015/tournamentid=2015086/leaderboard/index.html#ba4X2fFojH8LXpbT.97

For all of us who've been laid low with food poisoning, you'll remember that all the problems in life you thought you had just don't seem to matter anymore until you can get off that damn toilet.

Rory McIlroy leads the Race to Dubai and is the headliner going into tomorrow's opening round of the big WCG tournament in Shanghai, the problem is he ate something on Monday night which has given him a nasty case of food poisoning, banishing him to his hotel room under heavy medication from the tour doctor, hardly the preparation he had in mind.

If he gets over this in time he is set to tee it up with Rickie Fowler and Dustin Johnson for the first two rounds at Sheshan International GC at 1045 local time (945pm Wednesday EST). He cancelled a media event in Shanghai on Tuesday. He then earlier today tried to practise but had to w/d from the Pro-Am due to ongoing abdominal pains.
He sounds confident he will recover in time to play as he bids for his third Race to Dubai crown in four years and remember he has finished in the top 6 all four years he has played this event.

As for the gory details he had this to say "I thought I would be better this morning, but I had a piece of toast and a couple of bits of melon for breakfast and I came here and tried to hit some balls, but even just making a couple of swings my stomach was too sore. So I just need another day of rest and hopefully I will be better tomorrow and I can play.
“I was up from about 1am to 4am last night. The night before it didn’t start until about 4am, so it hasn’t been great. I’ve seen the doctor who has given me some antibiotics and something for the abdominal pain, plus some painkillers. I’ll be loaded up, so hopefully I will be OK.

It would be nice to see the golf course before tomorrow, but I’ve played it a few times. I didn’t play last year but I know the place well and [my caddie] JP has been out there, so it is better that I rest and get my energy up for tomorrow.”

The marquee pairing of the morning is Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson and Henrik Stenson off at 945am local time.

The lone Canadian in this elite field is Vancouver's Richard T Lee.

Dubuisson charges home to edge Van Zyl at the Turkish Airlines Open

European Tour Turkish Airlines Open leaderboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2015/tournamentid=2015088/leaderboard/index.html#fTHsoAjOWKFIbSHc.97

europeantour.com   Victor Dubuisson birdied three of his final four holes to claim a second Turkish Airlines Open title as The Final Series got off to a dramatic start in Antalya.

Jaco Van Zyl held a one shot lead as he stood on the 17th tee and appeared to be on course for a wire-to-wire victory and a first European Tour title at The Montgomerie Maxx Royal. But, in a repeat of his 2013 triumph, Dubuisson birdied the final two holes to get to -22 and beat Van Zyl by one shot.

The victory left the Frenchman in tears on the 18th green as he picked up his second European Tour victory and moved up to seventh in The Race to Dubai. With his confidence shot and just two top tens coming into this week, the Ryder Cup star admits he has suffered from a crisis of confidence this year.

"It's so hard because there were so many personal reasons why I didn't play that much this year," he said. "It's not because I didn't want to play.

"I was really counting on this Final Series to give me some confidence back because I completely lost it a few months ago. I was just missing everything

Kiradech Aphibarnrat had held the lead during the final day but finished two shots behind the winner with Byeong-hun An a further shot back on -19.

Chris Wood finished five shots behind the winner with Race to Dubai leader Rory McIlroy a further shot back after firing a 71 as his final round challenge failed to materialise.

It's off to China now for the WGC HSBC Champions in Shanghai next week.

Sharp finishes T5 after a strong showing in LPGA Blue Bay

LPGA Tour Blue Bay final leaderboard http://www.lpga.com/tournaments/blue-bay-lpga/leaderboard

She didn't get her first LPGGA Tour win but Alena Sharp didn't let herself or her fans down closing with a +1 73 +3 total in a very tough wind to finish just 5 shots behind the winner Sei Young Kim who shot 70 to finish at -2, one of only 4 players to beat par on Hainan Island in China.

22 year old Kim earned her win after she sunk a clutch birdie putt on the 72nd hole and shot a final-round -2 70 to finish one shot clear of Stacy Lewis 70, Candie Kung 71 and Kim Kaufman 69 at -2 286. It was her third LPGA Tour victory this year and remember she won the other two in playoffs.

Lydia Ko who leads the tour with 5 wins this year shot -2 70 and moved from T20 to T8.
