Holmes holds on to lead on the tough Blue Monster..

PGA Tour WGC-Cadillac Championship scoreboard http://espn.go.com/golf/leaderboard?tour=pga

After JB Holmes opened on Thursday with his tournament record-tying -10 62, someone, Ithink it was Sergio said, "I still say the winning score will be in single digits" and so far after two rounds he's right.

Holmes was in the water 3 times yesterday, twice his own fault and once unfairly, for a +1 73 which on a windy warm day was enough to take a two-shot lead over Ryan Moore (71) into the weekend. He's at -9.

On his first hole after a huge drive, Holmes hit a towering 6-iron well onto the green at the par 5, but due to the firm green and unfair undulation it rolled into the water.

"That's a joke. I hit a 6-iron straight up in the air, it landed 3 feet off the left of the green and 5 feet on it and it goes in the water on the right side of the green. That's not hard. That's stupid. That's unfair."

Rory McIlroy had a very human moment, when his temper got the better of him and he heaved his 3 iron into the water on the par 5 8th, but he made three birdies on the back nine for a -2 70, -1 total, to stay in the hunt but still eight shots behind Holmes.

Adam Scott had the low round of the day when he made six birdies in his round of -4 68 to get to -6 138.  Bubba Watson made a pair of eagles, including a bunker shot he holed at the 10th, for a 69, -4 total, and Henrik Stenson playing with Rory, made three straight birdies in his round of 71 also at -4.

The average score was about 73.4 and only seven players shot in the 60s, that's how tough this new Blue Monster is playing, in fact into the wind the 18th is almost unfair, Bubba called it stupid because the landing area for their drives is so narrow, with water on the left and bunkers on the right.

We'll see if Holmes freak opening round will be enough to keep him ahead this weekend, it may, but it is going to be close.

Meanwhile golf's mere mortals are playing as well, at another Trump course and it was veteran  Alex "Chubby"Cejka who birdied three of his last five holes for a -5 67 to reach -7 137 for a one shot lead in the wind-swept Puerto Rico Open.

Brandon Hagy is second after a 67. Argentina's Emiliano Grillo is third at -5 after a 70 while defending champion Chesson Hadley is in a group at -3 after his 70.
