It is definitely the Rory era in golf isn't it ? I think when he plays his game, he beats anyone. He just drives it farther than anyone but Bubba, he has it all, physically and now mentally, he's all set financially, single, focused on winning as many as he can, and he will..
Tiger doesn't scare anyone anymore except himself. Phil at 45 is not going to get better than he was at 25, it's all about Rory at #1 ahead of all the young guys.. Rickie, Jordan, Justin, Henrik etc etc...
He has extended his lead to four shots over Morten Orum Madsen (66) with a -6 66 in the third round, making just one birdie on the back nine after five birdies in his first eight holes on another perfect day in the desert of Dubai which by the way has now passed London Heathrow as the world's busiest airport. Lee Westwood is now 3rd after -3 69 -14.
Rory is at -20 196, the lowest winning record is -22, set by Stephen Gallacher in 2013 and Thomas Bjorn in 2001. Gallagher is currently T4
The birdseye shots on TV this morning of the window cleaners in their little chairs 73 stories up on one of the thousands of skyscrapers were simply scary !!

Kiwi Ko tops the field in LPGA season opener..
LPGA Tour live scoreboard http://espn.go.com/golf/leaderboard?tour=lpga
Having met so many athletes, performers personally in my career, you often wonder when you see them in their civvies away from the bright lights, and you realize how they have human frailties like all the rest of us, why they are so special.
For example,I have the good fortune of calling, now Sir Cliff Richard a good friend as he would always come to my tennis center when he was performing at the PlayHouse in Edinburgh, and we'd spend hours on court as he happily learned the game. It wasn't until I'd go to the concert at night and listened and watched him drive the packed crowd into a frenzy with all his hits that you were reminded that the guy who just wanted to be able to hit a forehand hours earlier really was special..
Lydia Ko falls into that category. We all met her as she won our national title twice, and when you see her at 15 with her iphone, big glasses, pig tails, hopelessly giggly and girly.. you think there goes another little geek..
Then she steps onto the tee in her golf gear, swings the club and everything changes..
Yesterday the now 17-year-old Kiwi shot a -7 65 -14 in the third round of the Coates Golf Championship to take a one shot lead, and if she wins today folks, she will become the youngest golfer to be ranked No. 1. In fact Ko can finish second or third today and still pass current #1 Inbee Park, who is T17th at -3.
She leads Ha Na Jang who is a stroke back at -13 203 after a -171 while yet another South Korean Na Yeon Choi shot a -6 66 -12. Stacy Lewis (70) is -10. Amy Yang (65) -9, Jessica Korda (69)-9 and Austin Ernst (70) -9
Alena Sharp is away behind T55 +3 72 69 78.. Plays wraps up today because of the Super Bowl tomorrow..

PGA Tour Phoenix Open live scoring http://espn.go.com/golf/leaderboard?tour=pga
It's not unusual to me that a Scot from Glasgow is leading this Waste Management Phoenix Open, considering all we Scots are forced to endure a life riddled with rain. After the soaking, windswept rain Martin Laird has endured on courses like Western Gailes, yesterday's steady drizzle was no problem as he shot a second -5 66, -10 to lead by 2 over rookie Daniel Berger (69), then Justin Thomas (68) another shot behind. Bubba Watson (71), Zach Johnson (70) and Angel Cabrera (69) were in the group at -6.
Of course all the talk is that the event goes into the weekend without Tiger Woods, who had the worst score (82) of his career and missed the cut by 12 shots and Phil Mickelson (76), who had his worst round on the TPC Scottsdale. Both have shot off home to their mansions in Florida and San Diego respectively, to prepare for Torrey Pines next week. 15 players failed to finish due to darkness
Canadians : Graham Delaet is T10 67 70 -5, Nick Taylor T55 71 71 E, Corey Renfrew T68 70 73 +1. Unfortunately Mike Weir, Adam Hadwin and David Hearn all MC.

Tiger shoots his worst 9 holes as a pro..finishes with 82..
Tiger looks like I've been giving him lessons !! I've been following this morning on the internet and he has just matched his worst 9-hole score on the PGA Tour with a 44 on his front nine which is the back nine at TPC Scottsdale. At the turn he is +10 for the tournament, last in the field with local club pro Michael Hopper.
If my memory is correct he did the same thing at Jack's Memorial tournament a few years ago.
Golf channel just broke into taped coverage of Dubai and they showed him take a double bogey on the 14th with a tee shot into a desert bush and a bad chip. He also made triple bogey on the par-5 15th with a tee shot into the water, a bunker shot over the green and a flubbed chip.
I just feel sorry for the guy, I mean he tried a little chip and run with a 5 iron where he stubbed the club behind the ball just like I do !!
Update.. Tiger has just finished with a bogey on his last hole for an 82, he missed the cut by 12, met with the media, says he is stuck between 2 systems, the one he had with Sean Foley and the one he is trying now, apparently he's forgotten how to chip because his club is bottoming out at a different spot ?!>> He is now winging his way back to Florida to prepare for next week at Torrey Pines where he has won 8 times...

He is one ahead of Scotland's Marc Warren -7 65 -13, who credits the birth of his new son with his continued his recent form, remember he had a second-place finish last week in Doha. Warren says like so many new fathers his wee man has brought a whole new perspective on life and what's important.

After shooting an 8-under 64, in windy conditions Saturday for a share of the lead with Rocco Mediate, golf's most interesting man Miguel Jimenez backed it up with -6 66, -17 199 to catch and overtake Mark O' Meara for a one shot victory for his sponsor Mitsubuishi Electric.
It is his second Champions Tour title in his third start on Tour and he did it in style making birdies on 6 of his last 9 holes including a big 20 footer on the 17th to pass O'Meara. In case you didn't know since he plays almost all his golf across the Atlantic, he has 21 European Tour wins and is the oldest winner there at age 50 years, 133 days, when he won the 2014 Spanish Open. He has also removed his name for consideration as the 2016 Ryder Cup captain, preferring to try and play his way onto the team.
Rocco Mediate, who shared the 36-hole lead with Jimenez, could only manage a final-round -2 70 to finish fourth. Fred Couples was third.

Corey Connors loses out in the Australian Amateur
Here is the report from Tyler Costigan of Golf Canada
ROSEBERY, New South Wales, Australia—Corey Conners’ impressive run of golf Down Under finally came to an end Saturday.
The National Amateur Squad member fell to Australian Kevin Yuan in a back-and-forth affair, 2&1. Conners held a 1-up lead late in the match until a three-putt bogey on the 15th left the match all-square. The Listowel, Ont., native couldn’t recover after that, losing two of the three remaining holes.
The 23-year-old will leave Australia with his head held high. In preparation for his ticket to this year’s Masters tournament (by way of U.S. Amateur finalist), Conners collected three impressive finishes Down Under. He started with a T12 finish at the Master of the Amateurs, won the Lake Macquarie Championship the following week and left the Australian Amateur in the quarter-final round—all high ranked events in the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR).

Bernd Wiesberger who played beautifully and was in and out of the lead all week made two bogies on the second and third holes and they proved costly as the Austrian settled for third place at -17.

Four way tie for the lead in Qatar...Taylor sparkles at the Hope !
European Tour Qatar Masters scoreboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2015/tournamentid=2015004/leaderboard/index.html
26 year old Brandon Grace buoyed by the rescue shot of the day shot 68 -13 to take a share of the lead alongside playing partner Emiliano Grillo 67, Scotland’s Marc Warren 67, and Austria’s Bernd Wiesberger 68, after a day full of twists and turns at the top of the leaderboard. At the 5th Grace drove it right, into the trees then had to snap hook a wedge around them to 5 feet for the birdie.
Wiesberger led for much of the day after birdieing the second and third and then curled in a 20 foot putt at the 12th and seemed to be in control of the situation until he pulled his tee shot into the desert at the driveable 16th and made his first bogey then made a five footer at the last at least keeping him in a share of top spot.
It was another perfect azure blue sky day on this Doha course, remember it's a Wednesday- Saturday event, Sunday is the first day of the working week. If you'd forgotten where they were playing we were reminded about 5am est when the local muslim leader got on the mosque's PA system and started calling everyone to prayers..none of the players even paused.. yet they can just lose it with the snap of a camera..!!

The PGA pros love this week in what will always be known as the Hope playing 3 easy desert courses with perfect greens in ideal weather. It's a nice way to ease into the year, they raise a ton of money, there are celebrities galore paying a fortune to play and the winning score (just 4 rounds now, used to be 5) is around -26.
Micheal Putnam is your leader, he made nine birdies in an 11-hole stretch in his 63. He birdied Nos. 7, 9 and 10 on the Nicklaus course and ran off six in a row on Nos. 12-17.
“The course is in perfect shape,” Putnam said. “Greens are good. … I made a lot of birdies at the end. Hit a lot of close shots, a lot of 5-, 10-foot putts. I made them all, so I got to be happy about that.”
Mark Wilson, John Peterson, Francesco Molinari and Scott Pinckney matched Blake Adams at 64. Wilson and Peterson played the Nicklaus course, Molinari opened on the Arnold Palmer Private Course and Pinckney was at La Quinta
Phil Mickelson got all the ink, he looked rusty but fit to me, shot -1 71 which is like shooting 76 on normal PGA Tour courses. Defending champion Patrick Reed opened with 65.
Canadians Nick Taylor had a solid -6 66 to T11 on the Palmer Private and he is just 3 shots off the lead, Graham DeLaet -4 68 T29 Nicklaus Private after overcoming 2 bogey's on his front nine, Adam Hadwin E 72 at LaQuinta, David Hearn E 72 (NP), Roger Sloan +2 74 (NP) and Mike Weir +8 80 (NP)

Coetzee, Weisberger, Grace lead in Qatar..Live scoreboards
Qatar Masters scoreboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2015/tournamentid=2015004/leaderboard/index.html
It's pronounced 'Cat are' and while we're at it it's George 'Cot zee ah' and Bernd 'Wees berger' and they are the leaders going into the weekend
It was a windless day in the Arabian Desert so the officials tucked the pins and scoring as a result was a shot higher than round 1. Coetzee from South Africa 68 67 and Weisberger from Austria 69 66 lead at -9 and they are joined by Brandon Grace who was -4, 68.
Qatar will host the 2022 World Cup, a controversial decision to many pundits, considering the poverty that most of the population endures, not to mention the heat, and the golf producers have a great camera position on a crane that pans away from the emerald green fairways over the desert landscape that looks like the surface of the moon, then like a giant mirage in the distance arises a huge stadium, currently hosting the world handball championships.
It is an amazing story, these Desert Swing courses in Abu Dhabi, Qatar and Dubai were nothing more than just that, desert just 25 years ago. The discovery of oil has made the controlling families rich beyond their wildest dreams, and how they have chosen to develop their cities, country's, how they have married their Muslim religion with those of the west and how they have become major players on the world's stage is just overwhelming.
They have announced $140 billion worth of projects including roads, stadiums, the recently opened airport, a new port and residential and retail developments in preparation for the international tournament. However, the scope of the works, which has seen tens of thousands of expat workers move to the country monthly, has put significant pressure on the construction industry and the recent drop in oil prices has put a huge dent in revenue.
Sergio Garcia was in early 69 69 -6, there are 10 others on that mark. Big Ernie had it going early in his round, missed a couple of short par putts coming in and is 67 72 -5.
Charl Schwartzel took a snowman on the par 3 8th, putting it in the water twice, then lost his ball to the top of a palm tree on 14, TV clearly showing his name Charl lodged in the trunk. He is at +8 today and heading off to Dubai for a long weekend..
Justin Rose and Stephen Gallagher playing along with Charl are also playing poorly and will miss the cut which fell at -1. The Bermuda grass on this Doha course grows quickly in the heat of the day and we can see the sheen where the grain grows in a different direction and between that, tough pins and undulations, they are giving the players fits..
Humana Challenge.. there are 6 Canadians in the field starting later this morning. Mike Weir, Graham DeLaet, David Hearn Roger Sloan, Adam Hadwin and Nick Taylor

Dustin Johnson tells SI he is finally growing up..Cocaine not a problem
CP.... Dustin Johnson says in a magazine interview that cocaine is not the reason he chose to sit out the last six months to get his life in order.
“I did not have a problem,” Johnson told Sports Illustrated when asked about cocaine. “It’s just something I’m not going to get into. I have issues. But that’s not the issue.”
Johnson said in August that he was taking a leave of absence from the PGA Tour to seek professional help for what he called “personal challenges.” Golf.com reported that he had failed a drug test for the third and time and had been suspended. The PGA Tour denied he had been suspended.
The interview was the first for Johnson since he took his leave of absence. He missed the final major, the FedEx Cup playoffs and the Ryder Cup. He is not expected to return until his fiancé, Paulina Gretzky, has their first child. She is due within the next month.
Johnson is an eight-time winner on the PGA Tour. He said he didn’t go to rehab during his break from golf, instead hiring a team of experts, such as a life coach, to help him understand how to get the most out of his talent. Johnson is regarded as one of the best American players and the most athletic.
He said he learned he didn’t handle stress the right way. “My way of getting rid of it was drinking or partying,” he told the magazine. “Yeah, that might work for that day or the next week, but eventually everything keeps piling up.”
Johnson said he has gone months without vodka, which had been his vice. He put down $1,000 in a bet with his prospective father-in-law, hockey great Wayne Gretzky, and other members of Sherwood Country Club to see who could go through January without drinking.
“I don’t miss waking up with a hangover, and I didn’t drink very often,” he said. “It was just when I did it was a little too much.”
Johnson is said to have a course-record 61 at Sherwood in Thousand Oaks, California, twice in three days and Gretzky said he senses that the 30-year-old from South Carolina is eager to return to golf and realize his potential. Johnson said he is trying to simplify his life, especially with a baby on the way.
“Over these past four or five months I’ve really grown up, and I am starting to become the person I want my kids to look up to,” he said.

Round 1 is in the books in Qatar, the second leg of the Desert Swing and Oliver Fisher came in with a -7 65 to overtake Spain’s Rafael Cabrera-Bello who began the Qatar Masters with a -6 66 to originally set the clubhouse target at Doha Golf Club.
Cabrara-Bello, third here in 2011 and 2014, produced six birdies in his flawless round and at -6 he is second by one from compatriot Alejandro Cañizares, England’s Mark Foster heads a group of 11 at -5 which includes two time winner Paul Lawrie from Aberdeen and Ernie Els who is looking for his 5th title in the middle east.
It's another strong field with defending champion Sergio Garcia at -3 69. Rory McIlroy has opted out although he is staying and practicing in nearby Dubai instead, preparing for next week's event there.
Tomorrow on the PGA Tour the Humana Challenge (Bob Hope) gets underway in the desert at La Quinta, and on Friday the Champions Tour kicks off with the invitational Mitsubishi in Hawaii.

Canadian Golf rankings, where they are from and where they play
After co-hosting the International Sports Report on TSN 1050 with Lins O'Connor on Sunday morning, I had several requests regarding the status of all our Canadian pro and amateur golfers so here is a link compiled for Golf Canada by John Marchesan of the Globe and Mail..It was compiled prior to this weekend's play..

Kaymer's epic collapse..a Walker waltz at Waialae
Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship final scoreboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2015/tournamentid=2015002/leaderboard/index.html?showLeaderboard=Y
Martin Kaymer's collapse in Abu Dhabi ws a stunner for sure, he had been in such control for 3 days and 4 holes, but it just goes back to the old adage " the toughest golf course in the world is the one between your ears"
When you have been playing perfect golf, it seems as soon as you hit a loose drive, or make a bogey, it is on a tapestry of that perfection and suddenly there is doubt..which spreads as quickly as unwanted weeds in a perfect garden..
Kaymer's bogey at #6 was his first in 59 holes, then the double at #9 followed, and the triple at #13 sealed his demise..
Meanwhile the momentum was al heading the other way for 22 year old Frenchman Gary Stal who had started the day eight behind, but went to the turn in 32 and birdied the tenth just as two-time Kaymer was beginning to falter.
The German double bogeyed the ninth after finding the desert scrub, and after Stal picked up another shot from 15 feet at the 11th the gap was down to two.
Kaymer found more trouble in desert down the left of the 13th, and ran up a triple bogey seven after duffing a pitch from the fairway to slip one behind.
Stal then holed from 20 feet at the 16th for birdie, and neither Kaymer nor World Number One Rory McIlroy could stop the 22 year old over the closing holes.
McIlroy almost holed from the sand at the last to force a play-off, but the four-time Major winner instead had to settle for a fourth runner-up finish in the event on 18 under, with Kaymer a shot further back in third following a round of 75.
Stal moves from 357 to 102 in world rankings with this his first win, and he sets the biggest comeback win in the 10 year history of the event, 8 shots... but it will always be remembered as the tournament that the King of Abu Dhabi blew..
Sony Open final scoreboard http://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/sony-open-in-hawaii/leaderboard.html
Speaking of blowing leads, last week at Kapalua Jimmy Walker had a 3 shot lead standing on the15th tee and lost it all to Patrick Reed, not so this week at Waialae.
He was full value in defending his title blistering the course with 62 63, 19 under par for the weekend and a 9 shot win (-23 257) over Scott Piercy, who finished with a 66 good for second. Matt Kuchar, who was two shots behind a the start of the round, didn’t make one birdie and shot 71 T3, along with Harris English (67) and Gary Woodland (67).
It was Walker's 4th PGA tour win..

Kaymer's to lose in Abu Dhabi...Walker set to defend in Hawaii
Martin Kaymer appears to have turned what promised to be an exciting weekend duel with Rory McIlroy into a procession at the Abu Dhabi Championship.
Walker, who lost last week’s Hyundai Tournament of Champions in a playoff with Patrick Reed, shot 62 Saturday to open up a two-shot lead at the Sony Open in Hawaii over Matt Kuchar. Walker is defending his 2014 title at Waialae.
He finished his round with 11 consecutive one-putts and only needed 22 putts for the entire round. Over his past seven rounds, Walker is 37 under par. In the state of Hawaii, he’s had 17 consecutive rounds in the 60s. Today, he will attempt to become the third repeat champ of the Sony Open and first since Ernie Els won in 2003 and 2004.
Canadians.. Roger Sloan (70 67 69) and Nick Taylor (70 68 68) are both T56 -4, while David Hearn is T61 -3 (67 71 69) Both Graham DeLaet and Adam Hadwin MC.
Seeking a fourth title in eight years in Abu Dhabi, Kaymer shot a 7-under 65 in the third round on Saturday to extend his overnight lead from one stroke to six. He moved to 20-under 196 overall, a record-low total here after 54 holes.
The U.S. Open champion’s pace was too hot for McIlroy, whose putting failed to match his tee-to-green play as he shot 71. The top-ranked McIlroy is eight strokes behind Kaymer and dropped from third into a share of fifth. Thomas Pieters shot 70 to stay second and is in the final group this morning for the second straight day.
Live scoreboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2015/tournamentid=2015002/leaderboard/index.html
However as play is well underway in round 4 this morning and after 3 birdies in his first 4 holes and a 10 shot lead, Kaymer has shot a bogey on the 6th and a double on the 9th while to stand at -20, while Frenchman Gary Stal is now just 3 behind at -17 after a front nine of -5 29, and Rory is at -3 and for a -15 total so far..

Allenby mugged in Honolulu..
For those of you who have never had the pleasure of travelling to the Hawaiian islands please don't let the following story put you off, but do be aware you will fly inro Honolulu on the island of Oahu, and while it is fronted by arguably the worlds most famous beach at Waikiki, it is a big American city, with its share of crime, and thugs looking to take advantage of unwary tourists...
AAP... PGA Tour player Robert Allenby said he was kidnapped and robbed Friday night after missing the cut at the Sony Open in Hawaii.
Allenby, 43, said he was at a wine bar in Waikiki when he was abducted at around 11 p.m. local time, placed in a car, driven 6½ miles away and robbed.
"I didn't think I was going to survive this one," Allenby told the Australian Associated Press."I was separated from my friend (Anthony Puntoriero) in the bar after we had paid the tab at 10:48 p.m., and he went to the bathroom and next thing you know I'm being dumped in a park miles away."I only know this part because a homeless woman found me and told me she saw a few guys pull up and throw me out of the car. That is where I got the scrapes above my eye from the sidewalk."
Golf Channel first reported on the abduction Saturday night.
According to the TV report, Allenby said he was robbed of all his cash, credit cards and cell phone.
Allenby told the AAP that he was helped by a retired military man in the middle of the night after being found by the homeless woman. The man got him together and gave him money for a cab to take back to his hotel near Waialae Country Club, site of the Sony Open.
"He got me into a taxi and paid for me to get to my hotel and I called police from there," Allenby, a four-time PGA Tour winner, told AAP. "I have his details and will be getting back in touch with him for sure."
As of Saturday afternoon, Allenby and police were reviewing surveillance footage from the bar in an attempt to identify potential suspects, the Golf Channel report said. Charles Goodwin, who is part of the PGA Tour's security staff on site, is spearheading the investigation from the tour's standpoint, according to the Golf Channel. Goodwin is a former FBI agent who lives in Hawaii.
Honolulu television station KHON2 said police were investigating it as second-degree robbery. "We have some names and numbers and they have some leads to follow up, so I am confident they will get the guys," Allenby told AAP.
"With the FBI guys involved, they're the best, the guys on the tour are awesome, and they'll get to the bottom of it."
Allenby is not sure if he is able to leave the island yet with the ongoing investigation.
Although he hasn't won on the PGA Tour since 2001, Allenby is 27th on the tour's career money list with more than $27 million in earnings.

Rory's ace in Abu Dhabi...5 Canucks in Honolulu
Live scoring Abu Dhabi http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2015/tournamentid=2015002/leaderboard/index.html
When you think of things Rory McIloy hasn't done as a pro on a golf course, winning the Masters comes to mind, but making an ace doesn't. He's had nine but none as a pro. Today on the 15th he made his first, on the par 3, 177 yards, 9 iron straight downwind, on his way to -6 66 for -11 total, just a shot behind Thomas Pieters -5 67 -12 and two behind the King of Abu Dhabi, Martin Kaymer -5 67 -13.
Round 2 is now complete after another sparkling day in the UAE capital, there is a little wind in the forecast for the weekend, but the prospect of Kaymer and McIlroy chasing this title will be giving the bookies a problem to pick the favourite.
Kaymer has his little fade working to perfection and is full of confidence on a course he owns with 3 previous titles. Rory drove the ball much better this morning in fact his ball striking was remarkable.
His buddy and playing partner Rickie Fowler had a snowman in the desert, an 8 on the 8th as he lost his ball left, had to go back and hit 3 off the tee on his way to 75.

Webb Simpson ditched his long putter and promptly ran off eight birdies over his last 10 holes for an 8-under 62 that gave him a share of the early lead with Paul Casey, who has decided to devote himself to the PGA Tour this year to spend more time with his wife and new baby.
Camilo Villegas missed a birdie putt on the par-5 18th hole after going out in 29 on his way to a 63. Rory Sabbatini had a 64, while Jason Day and Matt Kuchar were in the group at 65
As for our 5 Canucks David Hearn T23 -3 67, Nick Taylor and Roger Sloan T70 E 70, Graham DeLaet T111 +2 72, Adam Hadwin t126 +3 73.

King Kaymer leads in Abu Dhabi.. Rory, Rickie open with 67's
Live scoreboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2015/tournamentid=2015002/leaderboard/index.html
It's hard to imagine, when you watch any of the golf on this opening desert swing, this week in Abu Dhabi, that they are actually playing in the desert !! Lush green fairways, water everywhere, it's not until the producers pan back that you see the desert surrounding what in the days of Sinbad, was an oasis.
The UAE, Dubai in particular, is determined to be the world's favourite tourist location. No other city grows at it's rate, sky scrapers seem to emerge on a weekly basis. The Al Maktoum family that have ruled as a monarchy since 1833 know that the oil reserves are running out and are now relying on trade, financial services and tourism to fuel the economy. Expo 2020 has been awarded to the city, and many of the European Tour players make Dubai their home, it is centrally located, it's hot and sunny year round, it's tax free and the Maktoum family while governed by Islam, have a relaxed attitude towards non muslim westerners and their customs.
Abu Dhabi, the capital is south of Dubai and this is the setting for this week's field. Round 1 is already in the books and Martin Kaymer looking for his 4th title here finished with a birdie for a -8 64, a shot ahead of Belgium's Thomas Pieters (65). Six golfers are at -6, and 5 more at -5 67 including Rory and Rickie.
McIlroy, who opens every season now with a week of practice in Dubai declared himself pleased with 67, crediting his short game for saving some wayward driving.
Rickie who now can pick out where and when he wants to play, says he looks forward to becoming a world golfer.
Four of the world's top ten are here, it's the event's 10th anniversary and it continues to grow. With all due respect to the Sony Open in Hawaii this week, the strongest field is in the desert of the UAE.

Random Tuesday tidbits on the coldest day of this winter..
With the thermometer hovering around -30*c, we are once again experiencing the Arctic air that we wimpy Torontonians associate with Winnipeg, and much farther north !
So before I have to head outside, here are some random notes that have meandered through my mind recently.
* Tiger will return to the Phoenix Open for the first time in 14 years starting January 29 and finishing on SuperBowl Sunday, ensuring a massive TV audience for CBS who have all the early tournaments until NBC take over at the start of the Florida swing. NBC also has the rights to the Super Bowl.
Woods will also head further west to Torrey Pines the week after for the Farmers Insurance, where he has won 8 times..
* David Duval, who for me has always been a little wacko, is the latest player to join the Golf Channel as a studio analyst. He will make his debut in two weeks at the Humana Challenge, where he shot 59 in the final round 15 years ago during his rise to No. 1 in the world.
He always has marched to the beat of his own drummer, is right up there with the what the heck happened to his golf game question ( see Ian Baker Finch, Chip Beck etc), says he never found happiness till he met a women in 2003, Susie, now his wife with 3 kids, now 5 who he is Dad to, in Denver.
After winning the 2001 Open Championship he has not had a full-exempt card on tour since 2011, has battled various injuries for a decade. He lost his brother, his Dad and mother split up, he always seemed unhappy until he met Susie, seemed pretty immature, maybe it just took him a long time to grow up and deal with his demons, and come to think of it maybe that answers what the heck happened to his golf game !!
* Hunter Mahan is scheduled to play the Phoenix Open, Farmers Insurance Open, AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am and the Northern Trust Open. He may play all or none as his wife Kandi is expecting their 2nd child...Remember him leading our Canadian Open 2 years ago at the Abbey when he bolted from the practice tee in time to get home for their first..
* LPGA Tour...Don't you think a book, show or whatever on the love lives of the women would be a huge hit ? Who's straight, who's gay, who are dating their caddies, I mean who is boinking Paula Creamer and or Natalie Gulbis, do the Asian girls even have dates, so many juicy questions that all but those in the tours inner circle have answers to. Who has a drinking problem, who smokes weed ?...or worse.. and who needs a shrink?..
In this day of reality TV and TMZ websites that reveal all, why have these stories not been told, Why when thousands of lesbians from all over the world gather at Rancho Mirage for the Dinah Shore every year to party in the desert sun, and follow their favourites on the golf course, why does this not warrant so much as a whisper??
Are TV and the LPGA terrified of what we'll find out ? Maybe, but for a tour that can't get a major TV contract, I'll bet they would see their ratings soar when we got into their air tight locker room..or bedroom !!
When you walk as many miles as I do every week, these thoughts run through my mind !! just to keep me warm...

Rory headlines another strong field in Dubai this week..
I'm just wrapping up 5 days of looking after my Dad (95) and it made me wonder where I will be and who will be looking after me if I put in such a strong innings as he has. One thing for sure, if you are lucky enough to have a parent that you can still communicate with in their advanced years, make sure you treasure every moment and remember no matter how frustrating they can be, just think of what a nuisance you were when they were in charge !!..
If he could still see well enough, he'd look forward to watching the boy wonder Rory McIlroy lead four of the world's top 10 at the tenth Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship. Henrik Stenson (2) Justin Rose (6) and Rickie Fowler (10) star in a strong European Tour field including defending champion Pablo Larazzabal.
Rory has finished 2nd here 3 times, and the story yesterday was about how, as he does every year he wrote down his goals for this season on the back of a boarding pass on the flight to Dubai.
He memorizes it, then puts it in his wallet, never taking it out until the 2015 season is over, when he takes time to assess his performance privately... and privately is where those goals will remain as he refused to divulge them at his press conference..
I'll bet top of the list would be winning at Augusta, to win the Grand Slam at 25, then how about winning this years US Open at the links style Chambers Bay, south of Seattle to hold all four majors !!
Incidently Rory is paired with Rickie and Matteo Manessero, how about that for the world's best young future !!

Schwartzel's meltdown lets Sullivan in... Reed wins in Maui.
europeantour.com Andy Sullivan won his first European Tour title with a brilliant birdie on the first playoff hole as Charl Schwartzel let slip a five-shot overnight lead in a late collapse at the South African Open.
Schwartzel (74) finished terribly, making two bogeys and a double-bogey in his last five holes to fall back to 11-under and allow Sullivan (67) a chance at victory in the playoff.
Both players missed the fairway off the tee in the playoff, but Sullivan sent a low pitch from under a tree onto the green, and then holed out for an unexpected birdie to win.
“It’s unbelievable,” Sullivan said. “After Saturday I didn’t think I stood much of a chance with Charl getting ahead that far.”
The Englishman made up seven shots on Schwartzel in the final round and was waiting in the clubhouse when the South African unraveled at the end to miss out on a first South African Open title after leading by four shots with five holes to play.
Final scoreboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2015/tournamentid=2015000/leaderboard/index.html
Meanwhile in Maui on the PGA Tour Patrick Reed was 4 shots behind Jimmy Walker standing on the 15th tee without much chance of catching the veteran. He said afterward his mindset was to birdie 3 of the last 4 to try and secure 2nd place. In fact he closed with birdie, eagle, bogey birdie -6 67, a 271 total while Walker couldn't make a putt, finally missing an 18 footer for the win on the 72nd, -3 69 also 271...
Minutes later Reed drained a similar 18 footer for birdie and a playoff in the Hyundai Tournament of Champions.
Nick Taylor from Abbotsford, B.C., finished tied for 29th at 6-under par 286.

Schwartzel running away with South African title..Henley ahead in Maui
European Tour live scoreboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2015/tournamentid=2015000/leaderboard/index.html?showLeaderboard=Y
With round 3 well underway, Charl Schwartzel who has never won his national championship is red hot and has jumped to the top of the leaderboard at this South African Championship.
He began the day one shot behind England's Andy Sullivan, but there was an eight-shot swing in the first four holes at Glendower Golf Club.
Schwartzel holed from 50 feet across the first green for birdie, from six feet on the second and 20 feet on the third before his approach to the fourth almost pitched straight into the hole and finished inches away.
That moved him to -11 while playing partner Sullivan failed to get up and down from a greenside bunker on the first on his way to four straight bogey's to drop to -5.
England's Lee Slattery has set the clubhouse target on -7 after a flawless 65.
Host Ernie Els fired a third round of 69 to leave the five-time winner at -3.
PGA Tour live scoreboard http://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/hyundai-tournament-of-champions/leaderboard.html.
Meanwhile amidst the spectacular scenery in Maui, including all those whales breaching, Russell Henley putted beautifully on his way to an -8 65, giving him a one-shot lead over Bae Sang-Moon in the opening round of the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, this winners-only event that starts the year. The Plantation Course offered up far better scores than usual without the typical wind off the west coast.
Bae is facing trouble with his south Korean authorities as he is trying to delay his period of mandatory military service..
Most players have not competed in nearly two months. Bubba Watson has been at Kapalua for the last week with his newly adopted 2nd child and he had a 70, a reasonable start, though he has yet to break 69 in 12 rounds on the Plantation Course.
Jimmy Walker and Patrick Reed led a group at 67 that included Scott Stallings, Robert Streb and Ben Martin.
Canada’s Nick Taylor fired a solid 69 that left him tied for 12th after the opening-round.

Big Easy is a big bust in round 2..
England's Andy Sullivan, looking for his first European Tour win, leads at the halfway stage of The South African Open Championship after he added a 70 to his opening 66, to get to -8, one shot ahead of Charl Schwartzel.
However the news wasn't so good for the Big Easy who surprisingly dropped off the pace with second round 77. Els, who has won the event five times, was just one shot behind Sullivan after an opening 67 but dropped down the leaderboard with a round which featured back-to-back triple bogeys around the turn.
Schwartzel, who has yet to win his national Open, finished birdie, eagle, birdie to record a 69.

Golf this weekend in Hawaii and South Africa
It is freezing cold across most of this country again today, temperatures as low as -35*c, here in Toronto -20 or worse with the windchill, so just to warm you up I remind you that the 2015 season resumes this weekend with the PGA Tour playing Hyundai Tournament of Champions on the Plantation Course at Kapalua, a limited field of last years winners, and the European Tour plays the South African Open.
With the WGC World MatchPlay being moved from February to May it is unlikely we'll see Tiger or Rory or Adam or Sergio or Rickie on the PGA Tour until the start of the Florida swing, golf is such a long schedule world wide.
On this side of the pond all the other pros basically take their families to Hawaii for 3 weeks, first full field is next week at the Sony, to ease into 2015... Nice eh! We are all just trying to stay warm.... hoping the car will start..
However as always there are story lines galore, how about Rory winning the Masters to complete the slam, then winning the US Open to hold all 4 majors !! Will Phil bounce back, Dustin Johnson returns, it goes on and on and I will be here on FairwaysPlus for my 20th year sharing it all with you..
In Canada we will follow Brooke Henderson as she sets out on here pro career, and remember Adam Hadwin, Nick Taylor and Roger Sloan will join Delaet, Hearn and Weirsy this year.
I'm off to work, stay warm and enjoy this 2015 season starting this weekend..
