Patte wins at the Briars...

Jacob Patte wins PGA of Ontario Apprentice Championship

SUTTON WEST, ON - If at first you don't succeed, try again!

That was Jacob Patte's motto heading into Monday's PGA of Ontario Apprentice Championship at scenic Briars Golf Club.

A year ago, Patte, who is in his second year as an assistant professional at Oshawa Golf & Curling Club, fired a not so impressive 77 during his first tour of the Stanley Thompson/Robbie Robinson designed layout in the Apprentice Championship.

This time around, Patte reeled off seven birdies and just two bogeys to post a winning score of 5-under, 66 for his first PGA of Ontario victory in 2013.

"Last year I learned what clubs you need to use on the tee, because the course is short and tight without a lot of room for error," said Patte who hit driver three times and 3-wood once over the par-71 track that plays just less than 6,300 yards. "I played pretty conservatively this year and just tried to hit the wide areas of the fairway. I made a lot of putts today and that was the difference. There was a stretch of holes from No. 8 through No. 15 that I felt I could not miss the hole."

During that stretch, Patte who won the Assistants' Team Championship and the Assistants' Summer Championship in 2012, rolled in five birdies with no bogeys! "This course has the same designer as Oshawa and some similar greens with similar green speeds, so I was definitely comfortable out there."

With a bogey on No. 18, Andrew Day from Whispering Hills Golf Club finished T2 with John McCann from Fairtree Golf Centre at 3-under, 68.  Oshawa's J.C. Beecroft finished alone in fourth place at 2-under, while there was a three-way tie for fifth between Alex Green from Granite Golf Club, Brian McCann from The Academy at BraeBen Bradlee Ryall Golf and Chima McLean from Beach Fairway Golf Range.

Patte will tee it up Wednesday for the Golf Supply House PGA of Ontario Fall Championship at The Georgian Bay Club.
