Weather report : The local weatherman is saying that the worst of the storms won’t arrive until late this afternoon, although there is a possibility of some rain beginning around 2 p.m.  Strong winds and heavy rain are expected to arrive in the late afternoon and continue overnight, with more showers on Friday morning but the weather will improve as the day progresses. Thursday's high 29*c . Friday will be cooler, 14*c with the winds expected to gust up to 35 kph.
Advantage so far to the early flight.

Still the skies were sunny when Arnie, Gary and Jack teed it up to get things started, all hit the fairway. Finally this much anticipated 76th edition is underway.

Before I start, the GC is broadcasting "Live at the Masters" this morning with Chamblee, Learner, Rosaforte on site and they should just bloody well call it " Live with Tiger " and get it over with. So far with their man off at 1035, they have outdone even there own completely biased coverage,I have just had to turn them off, follow on the computer until TSN starts their coverage...

As of 1040am there are only 8 players under par, Harrington and Stenson both have eagled the par 5 2nd, but according to pgatour.com the opening hole is part of the problem. Of the first 42 players to play the hole, just one has managed to birdie it (amateur Hideki Matsuyama). Meanwhile, there have been 16 bogeys, three double bogeys and one triple bogey, with the hole playing to a scoring average of 4.571.

Adam Scott, who tied for second here a year ago, played the front nine in +3 39 with 5 bogey's but a saving eagle at the par 5 8th. He has steadied his ship with 3 straight pars on the back nine.

1228pm  Tiger must be nervous, he snapped a couple of vicious hooks on his first 2 drives, managed to scramble pars even with a penalty stroke, birdied the par 4 4th and is at -1 playing the 6th..

Paul Lawrie from Aberdeen, (he won the 1999 Open Championship at Carnoustie, the one Van De Velde blew) is leading at -3 as he has eagled the 2 par 5's, 13 and 15 on the back nine. Paul has been playing beautifully this year on the European Tour with  a 10th at the Volvo, 8th in Abu Dhabi before winning the next week in Qatar.

1245pm  New leader Henrik Stenson with another eagle at the par 5 8th is at -5, Luke Donald is +2 through 6 with 3 bogey's.

Brendan Steele is in with a +4 76, playing his first Masters he made bogey at the 10th then followed it with 3 more right around Amen Corner. I guess he has now paid his dues. Only 13 players are under par.

1257pm  Tiger has just made bogey at the par 4 7th and is now E playing the par 5 8th. Tiger has just birdied 8 to get back to -1.

1.20 Paul Lawrie has made bogey at 18 but will be pleased to be the clubhouse leader at -3 69. On course Henrik Stenson is the clear leader at -6.  He has never broken 70 in 18 rounds at the Masters and he’s shot 80 and 83 in the first round the last two years.  Lawrie is back at Augusta after an 8 year absence. He says the course is wet, the greens are quick, but there are birdies out there.

WEATHER UPDATE ..the weather system scheduled to arrive with some rain at 2pm has now been pushed back well into this evening, a big break for Rory etal who are in the late flight.

1.32  Jason Dufner has been playing well this year with 4 top 25's in 8 starts including 2 top 10's. Remember he was T2 here last year with Adam Scott and he has just birdied the first 2 holes.

1.41  Adam Scott after that scary front 9 has made 7 straight pars on the back nine, now playing 17 at +3. Scott Verplank has 4 birdies and 1 bogey to jump up to -3 through 7 holes.

Tiger just had a bonus birdie at 10, is at T4 -2 with Amen Corner ahead then you'd expect at least birdies at 13 and 15 the 2 par 5's so he is in great shape.

1.42  Rory is finally off the first tee, Sergio is playing just ahead of him but has a badly infected fingernail so I expect if things go south for him he may WD. A big year for Sergio as he strives to make the Ryder Cup team for Medinah, captained by Jose Maria Olazabal and in honour of Seve.  By the way Mark O'Meara had to WD with a pulled muscle in his ribcage.

1.56  Steve Stricker is now at -1. He went out in +2 39, then birdied 10,15 and 17.

2.00 Rory has made a double bogey 6 on the first.

2.11 Martin Kaymer is in with E 72. He went out in -2 34 but back in +2 38 with a bogey on 13 and just a par on 15, the 2 par 5's.

2.25  Luke is now at +3 playing #11 after a bogey at 10. Tiger has made it through Amen Corner E, and has just made par on par 5 13, still -2.

2.28 With Fanny Sunesson suffering a back injury, she isn't carrying Henrik's bag this week, her girlfriend is, but she is at Augusta coaching him, remember she won 3 Masters with Faldo. He is at -6 playing 16 and so far has the round of the day.

2.37 Luke makes eagle at 13 to get back to +1. Keegan Bradley doubled his first hole but has fought back to get to -2 playing 15.

2.43  Mike Weir is E through 6 and Lee Westwood is -1 through 5

It's 245 and I must go out for a bit, so keep your eye on the leaderboard above and please feel free to get in on the comments section. I will be back blogging to the end of this round one in an hour or so.

HELLO..518pm  Back from a walk, beautiful day, bit of traffic as many get start on Easter weekend...listened to colleagues Jerry and Alan on Opening Day from Cleveland where the boys are down 4-1.. Ricky struggled with control, Indians Justin Masterson was impeccable 8 innings 10k 2 hits great sinker and change.. good day for Indians sold out opener..  don't panic Jays fans..

520  Well lots to talk about... Tiger finished bogey bogey for E 72 and all the questions begin again since the old Tiger at -2 before the 2 par 5's on the back nine mean't a certain -4....

Lee WESTWOOD is at -4 and has just made par at 16 and he leads with Louis Oosthuizen who is in fine form and shot -4 68

Westwood ends the day as the leader at -5 67, followed by an in form Louis Oosthuizen -4 68. Tiger played poorly, missed drive after drive left, made bogey at 17 and 18 but scrambled to E 72, while Rory recovered from a double bogey on 1 with birdies at 17 and 18 to finish -1 71.

Going into Easter Friday, the field is so tightly bunched that the projected cut is +5 with the top 36 and ties and those within 10 shots meaning only 8 of the 95 players will MC !!
